NHL Three Stars of the Week for Januray 6th – 12th

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 6th through 12th.

 

First Star – Andrei Vasilevskiy (G, Tampa Bay Lightning)

  • Vasilevskiy would go a perfect three for three for the Lightning this past week as Tampa embarked on a 10 game winning streak. Vasilevskiy would record two shutouts with a 0.67 GAA, and a .972 save percentage in his perfect week. He would start the week with a 21 save performance against Vancouver in a 9-2 win on Jan. 7th. The on Jan. 9th, Vasilevskiy would pitch a 25 save shutout over Arizona, and then complete the week with a 23 save shutout performance against Philadelphia on Jan. 11th.

Second Star – Tony DeAngleo (D, New York Rangers)

  • DeAngelo would lead all scorers for the week with three goal and four assists for seven points. DeAngelo would start the week with a two assist performance on Jan. 7th versus Colorado. Then on Jan. 9th he would record his first career NHL hat trick and career high five points (3g, 2a) against New Jersey.

Third Star – Cam Talbot (G, Calgary Flames)

  • Talbot would a go a perfect 3-0-0 for the week for the Flames, and he would record a 1.67 GAA, and a .953 save percentage for the week. Talbot would start the week with a 31 save 2-1 victory over Chicago on Jan. 7th, and then would follow it with a 42 save 2-1 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 9th. Then to close out the week he would make 29 saves on Jan. 12th to defeat Edmonton 4-3.

  • The Washington Capitals announced that they have re-assigned defenseman Christian Djoos to Hershey of the AHL.

 

  • The NWHL announced that Janine Weber has signed a PTO with the Connecticut Whale, and will play for the team against Boston this Sunday, January 12th.

Vancouver Canucks v. Buffalo Sabres – 1p EST Start Time

In Buffalo the Sabres would face the Vancouver Canucks in a game between the two expansion siblings from 50 years ago. In the first two periods both teams would trade goals as Brock Boeser and Brandon Montour would score in the first period, and in the second period Bo Horvat and Sam Reinhart (PPG) would score to have the game tied at two. Then in the third period Zemgus Girgensons would score for the Sabres, but JT Miller, Boeser (second of the game), Jake Virtanen, and Loui Eriksson would score for the Canucks to take the 6-3 victory.

 

Montreal Canadiens v. Ottawa Senators – 7p EST Start Time

In Ottawa the Senators would play host to the Montreal Canadiens. In the first period the Canadiens would strike first with a Nick Suzuki powerplay goal. Then after a scoreless second period Drake Batherson would score for the Senators to tie the game at one and send it to overtime, but in the extra frame it would be Ilya Kovalchuk scoring the game winner to give the Canadiens the 2-1 victory.

 

Boston Bruins v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time

On Long Island the New York Islanders would play host to the Boston Bruins. In the first period Scott Mayfield would score to give the Islanders the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Jake DeBrusk would score to tie the game at one. In the third period John Moore and Mathew Barzal would score to keep the game tied, and then in overtime Patrice Bergeron would strike on the powerplay to give the Bruins the 3-2 victory.

 

Tampa Bay Lightning v. Philadelphia Flyers – 7p EST Start Time

In Philadelphia the Tampa Bay Lightning would take on the Flyers, and it would require only one goal as Pat Maroon would score in the second period to give the Lightning the 1-0 victory.

For the second annual Hartford Whalers Night, the Carolina Hurricanes would host the Los Angeles Kings while sporting the ever nostalgic Whalers jerseys. In the first period Nino Niederreiter would score his sixth of the season, then with four seconds left in regulation Teuvo Teravainen would get the empty net goal to give the Hurricanes the 2-0 victory.

 

New York Rangers v. St. Louis Blues – 8p EST Start Time

In St. Louis the Blues would host the New York Rangers, and in the first period Filip Chytil would open the scoring for the Rangers, but goals from Robert Bortuzzo and Vince Dunn would give the Blues the 2-1 lead. Then in the second period Brett Howden would score for the Rangers, however, David Perron (PPG), Zach Sanford, and Jaden Schwartz would all score to give the Blues the 5-2 victory.

The Anaheim Ducks would come to visit the Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period both teams would trade goals as Max Jones would strike for the Ducks, and Jonathan Toews would tie the game for Chicago. In the second period Dominik Kubalik would score a pair of goals to give the Blackhawks the 3-1 lead. In the third period Rickard Rakell would tally for the Ducks, but an Olli Maatta goal would give the Blackhawks the 4-2 victory.

 

Columbus Blue Jackets v. Vegas Golden Knights – 10p EST Start Time

Then in the second period Patrick Marleau would net his eighth of the season to give the Sharks the 2-1 victory.

Then in the third period Kempe would score his second of the game to secure the 5-2 win for the Kings.

In Anaheim the Ducks would face the Dallas Stars, and in the first period Denis Gurianov would strike on the powerplay for Dallas. Then in the second period Alexander Radulov would score on the powerplay to grow Dallas’ lead to two. Good Evening Devils fans! Tonight your New Jersey Devils head into Manhattan to take on the New York Rangers as the “Hudson River Rivalry” continues. The first period sure showed a lot of offensive flair as both teams combined to score five goals. The Rangers got on the board first as Artemi Panarin blasted a shot it from the right faceoff circle for his twenty fourth goal of the season. Moments laters while short handed, the Devils tied the game on a short handed goal from Kevin Rooney. Tony D’Angelo and Chris Kreider each scored the other goals for the Rangers. Blake Coleman would tip in a Damon Severson shot to get the Devils within one goal. After the first period, the Rangers would lead 3-2 over the Devils.

Blake Coleman would score again and tie things up almost midway through period two. Coleman now has fifteen goals on the season. However, things would go downhill for the Devils the rest of the way. Tony D’Angelo would complete the hat trick at even strength and on the power play. New Jersey pulled started MacKenzie Blackwood in favor or backup goalie Louis Domingue. The Rangers took a 5-3 lead going into the final period. 

For good measure, the Rangers added on another goal as Jesper Fast would score his seventh goal of the season. the New York Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-3. The Devils are back in action Saturday night as they take on the league leading Washington Capitals

In the first period both teams would trade goals as Eric Robinson would score for the Jackets and Ryan Getzlaf would score for the Ducks. Then in the second period Ondrej Kase would score for the Ducks, but goals from Nathan Gerbe and Zach Werenski would give the Jackets a 3-2 lead. Then late in the third period Werenski would score again to give the Blue Jackets the 4-2 lead. Kase would score his second of the game as well for the Ducks, but it would not be enough as Columbus would hold on to win 4-3.

In the third period Blake Wheeler would score on the powerplay for the Jets, and Luke Kunin would tally for the Wild as the game would remain tied heading into overtime. In the extra frame Eric Staal would strike on the powerplay to give the Wild the 3-2 victory.

  • The Canadiens also make a pair of trades. The first one being with the Ottawa Senators as they trade defenseman Mike Reilly to the Senators for forward Andrew Sturtz and a 2021 5th Round Pick.

 

  • Then next up the Canadiens would trade San Jose’s 2020 4th Round Pick to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Marco Scandella.

 

  • The Sabres would then flip the draft pick they just received from the Canadiens as they would send it to Calgary for forward Michael Frolik.

In the third period Kadri would net his second of the game, and JT Compher and Joonas Donskoi would both tally to give the Avalanche the 7-2 lead. In Vancouver the Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks would play a close one. In the first period JT Miller would open the scoring for the Canucks, but Connor Murphy would tie the game back up at one. Then in the second period we would see a six goal period as David Kampf, Patrick Kane (PPG), and Jonathan Toews would score for the Blackhawks, and Tanner Pearson, Quinn Hughes (PPG), and Elias Pettersson would score for the Canucks as the game would be tied at four going into the second intermission. In the third period Bo Horvat would break the tie with his 11th of the season, but Kane would net his second of the game to tie the game back up at five, but Adam Gaudette would score to retake the lead for the Canucks, and Horvat would score his second of the game as they would go on to win 7-5.

 

Philadelphia Flyers v. Vegas Golden Knights – 10p EST Start Time

In Vegas the Golden Knights would play host to the Philadelphia Flyers. In the first period the Flyers would get goals from Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny, but goals from Shea Theodore, Max Pacioretty (PPG and EVS), and Jon Merrill to take the 4-2 lead. Then in the second period Cody Glass would score to grow Vegas’ lead to three, but Sean Couturier would tally his 11th of the season to bring the Flyers back within two. In the third period Couturier would net his second of the game while on the powerplay to bring the Flyers within one, but the Golden Knights would hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Month for the month of December.

 

First Star – Jonathan Huberdeau (LW, Florida Panthers)

  • Huberdeau would tie for League lead in points for the month of December with 22 points (6g, 16a) in 13 games to average 1.69 points per game. Huberdeau would record points in 10 of the 13 games, including a back to back four point games, and would record three four point games overall in the month of December.

Second Star – Tristan Jarry (G, Pittsburgh Penguins)

  • Jarry would tie for the League lead in wins for the month with eight, and lead the League in shutouts (3) and goals against average (1.54) in nine games played. Jarry would also register the second best save percentage with .947% to help the Penguins go 10-2-0 for the month.

Third Star – Artemi Panarin (RW, New York Rangers)

  • Panarin would tie with Huberdeau for the League lead in points with 22, and would register ten goals and 12 assists in 14 games played for the Rangers.   • The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that forward Jake Guentzel will miss four to six months after successful shoulder surgery.

 

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have re-signed defenseman Justin Holl to a three year contract extension.

 

  • The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced that they have fined forward Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins $5000, maximum allowed under the CBA, for high sticking Ottawa forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

 

  • NHL DoPS also announced that they have fined Ottawa Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau $2500 for roughing Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin.

 

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that goaltender Joonas Korpisalo had successful surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee.
