NHL News and Notes from Thursday, January 16th, 2020


Game Recaps:

Pittsburgh Penguins v. Boston Bruins – 7p EST Start Time


In Boston the Bruins would host the Pittsburgh Penguins, and 24 seconds into the game Sidney Crosby would score for the Penguins to take the quick lead. However, the Bruins would score four unanswered goals to secure the 4-1 victory. Sean Kuraly, Par Lindholm would score in the first period, and Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand would strike in the third period to secure the Boston victory.


Calgary Flames v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p EST Start Time

In Toronto the Maple Leafs would play host to the Calgary Flames. After a scoreless first period Calgary would strike with a Derek Ryan tally, but then in the third period William Nylander would score on the powerplay to tie the game at one and send it to overtime. After the extra frame would not give us a winner, Matthew Tkachuk would score in the shootout to give the Flames the 2-1 victory.


Los Angeles Kings v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

The Los Angeles would visit Florida to take on the Panthers, and in the first two period the Panthers would take a two goal lead with goals from Evgenii Dadonov (PPG) and Frank Vatrano. Then in the third period the Kings would get goals from Alex Iafallo, Adrian Kempe, and Anze Kopitar, but it would not be enough as Mike Matheson (PPG) and Brian Boyle would score to give the Panthers the 4-3 victory.


New York Rangers v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time

On Long Island the New York Rangers and Islanders would renew their rivalry. In the first period Josh Bailey would net his 10th of the season for the Islanders to take the 1-0 lead, and then in the second period Mika Zibanejad would score on the powerplay to tie the game at one. then in the third period Anthony Beuviller would score for the Islanders, but goals from Tony DeAngelo and Chris Kreider (PPG) would give the Rangers the 3-2 victory.


Montreal Canadiens v. Philadelphia Flyers – 7p EST Start Time

The Philadelphia Flyers would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and a late goal by Joel Farabee would give the Flyers the 1-0 lead, but Tomas Tatar would score before the end of the first period to tie the game. Then in the second and third period Ilya Kovalchuk would score a pair of goals, and Artturi Lehkonen would score his 11th of the season to give the Canadiens the 4-1 victory.


New Jersey Devils v. Washington Capitals – 7p EST Start Time

Alex Ovechkin would explode for his 25th career hat trick to lead the Washington Capitals to a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils.


Carolina Hurricanes v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p EST Start Time

In Columbus the Blue Jackets would host the Carolina Hurricanes. In the first period Emil Bemstrom would score to give the Jackets the 1-0 lead, but in the second period Martin Necas would score to tie the game at one. Then in the third period Jordan Staal would score for the Hurricanes, but goals from Cam Atkinson and Nick Foligno would give the Blue Jackets the 3-2 victory.


Vegas Golden Knights v. Ottawa Senators – 730p EST Start Time


In Ottawa the Vegas Golden Knights would come to visit the Senators. Paul Stastny and Mark Stone would both strike to give the Knights the 2-0 lead in the first forty minutes of the game. Then in the third period Vladislav Namestnikov and Connor Brown (PPG) would score for the Senators, but goals from Chandler Stephenson (SHG) and Ryan Reaves would secure the 4-2 victory for the Golden Knights.


Anaheim Ducks v. Nashville Predators – 8p EST Start Time

In Nashville the Predators would host the Anaheim Ducks. In the first period Josh Manson and Adam Henrique would score to give the Ducks the 2-0 lead, but Viktor Arvidsson would score to get Nashville on the board. In the second period Rikard Rakell would score to give the Ducks the two goal lead back, and in the third period Derek Grants would score while shorthanded to give the Ducks a three goal lead. Mikael Granlund would score shorthanded for the Predators, but it would be too little, too late as the Ducks would go on to win 4-2.


Tampa Bay Lightning v. Minnesota Wild – 8p EST Start Time

In Minnesota the Wild would face off with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and in the first period a Zach Parise powerplay goal would give the Wild the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Joel Eriksson Ek and Ryan Suter would score to secure the 3-2 victory for the Wild. Nikita Kucherov would score both goals for Tampa.


Buffalo Sabres v. Dallas Stars – 830p EST Start Time

The Buffalo Sabres would head to Dallas to faceoff with the Stars, and the Sabres would get goals from Jimmy Vesey, Rasmus Dahlin, Michael Frolik, and Zemgus Girgensons to take the 4-1 victory. Jamie Benn would score the lone goal for the Stars.


San Jose Sharks v. Colorado Avalanche – 9p EST Start Time

The Colorado Avalanche would host the San Jose Sharks and shut them down as the
Avalanche would get goals from Valeri Nichushkin, Cale Makar, Ryan Graves, and Matt Calvert (SHG) to secure the 4-0 shutout victory.


Arizona Coyotes v. Vancouver Canucks – 10p EST Start Time

In Vancouver the Canucks would host the Arizona Coyotes. In the first period both teams would trade goals as Christian Dvorak would get the Coyotes on the board first with his 12th of the season, and Bo Horvat would score his 16th of the season while on the powerplay to tie the game at one. Then in the second period Jake Virtanen would strike to give the Canucks the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Tanner Pearson would net his 13th of the season to give the Canucks the 3-1 victroy.
