Well….It Wasn’t A Shutout

The Whale skated today against the defending champion Whitecaps in Minnesota. The starters for the game for the Whitecaps was Amanda Leveille, and for the Whale it was Brooke Wolejko.

In the first period, the Whitecaps got off to a fast start by scoring 2 minutes into the game. The goal coming from Allie Thunstrom, the assists on the play coming from Lauren Barnes and former Whale defender Amanda Boulier. 11 minutes later, the Whitecaps would double their lead. The goal coming from Amanda Boulier, her second point of the game. The assist coming from Jonna Curtis. 3 minutes later, Jonna Curtis would notch a goal, for her second point of the game. Assists on the play came from Amanda Boulier, her second assist and third point of the game; Meaghan Pezon got the other assist on the play. The Whitecaps would take a 3-0 lead after 1.

In the second period, the Whitecaps would once again get off to a fast start. This time it would take 3 minutes to start the scoring in the period. The goal coming once again from Amanda Boulier, it would be her second goal of the game, and her fourth point of the game. Assist on the play came from Nicole Schammel and Audra Richards. After both teams traded some back and forth chances for most of the period, the Whitecaps would tally again with about 3 minutes left in the period. The goal coming from Allie Thunstrom, her second goal of the game. The assists on the play came from Jonna Curtis, her second assist of the game; Kelsey Cline also tallied an assist on the play. Before the end of the period, the Whale would get on the board. The goal coming from their All Star rookie forward Emma Vlasic. The assists on the play coming from fellow All Star Grace Klienbach and Whale newcomer Janine Weber. The period would end with the Whitecaps up 4-1.

In the third period, the Whale decided to make a goaltending change, which saw the departure of Brooke Wolejko and the entrance of Cassandra Goyette. Goyette played some lockdown goaltending as she would face 14 shots and made 13 saves. The Whitecaps would add a fifth goal in the game, a great snipe shot my Meaghen Peronist, her second point of the game. The assist on the play went to Nicole Schammel, which was her second assist of the game. The game would end with the Whitecaps winning 6-1.

Amanda Leveille ended up facing 32 Whale shots and made 31 saves, while Brooke Wolejko faced 19 Whitecaps shots and made 14 saves.

The Whale will once again face the Whitecaps tomorrow at 3p in Minnesota. Questions for tomorrow on whether or not Wolejko or Goyette will get the start for the Whale tomorrow.

Losing Streak Reaches 10 Games This Season

Happy Holidays Whale fans! I hope y’all have a great time and stay safe out there! Connecticut skated again against the defending champion Minnesota Whitecaps, in their second game this weekend.

Unlike yesterdays game, where all the scoring happened in the third period. Today, all the scoring would happen in the first. The Minnesota Whitecaps would take an early lead, the goal coming from Allie Thunstrom. It would be her fourth goal of the weekend, and her tenth goal of the season, which leads the team. Assist on the play came from Audra Richards, her second assist on the weekend, giving her 4 assists against the Whale this season. 12 minutes later, the Whale would tie the game up. The goal came from their rookie forward Emma Vlasic. It would be her team leading fifth goal of the season. The assist came from Kayla Meneghin, her third of the season. However, three minutes later, Minnesota would regain the lead. Haylea Schmid would score, it would be her second goal of the season. The assist on the play came from Nicole Schammel.

Connecticut rallied well and mounted a furious comeback, however Amanda Leveille had all the answers for each Whale shot.

Both goalies played well, as Leveille faced 33 shots and made 32 saves, and Sonjia Shelly faced 44 shots and made 42 saves.

The next set of games Connecticut plays will be at home against the undefeated Boston Pride. The first game will be on Saturday December 28th at 330p and Sunday December 29th at 130p.

Losing Streak Continues, Thunstrom Gets Hat Trick

The Whale came off of their bye week skating against the defending champions, the Minnesota Whitecaps.

The Whale had an interesting strategy heading into today’s game. They only dressed 4 defenders, with Erin Hall and Jordan Brickner out.

The game had some great back and forth offensive chances between both teams. Both Leveille and Wolejko were on top of their game, coming up with the saves on some incredible opportunities.

The first goal of the game would come in the third period, and it wouldn’t take long as it would be the speedy Allie Thunstrom getting the goal. Minnesota would double their lead 5 minutes later, the goal coming shorthanded by Allie Thunstrom again. She intercepted a pass to the point and was off to the races and scored on Wolejko. Down 2-0, the Whale would pull their goalie at the end of the game to attempt a comeback, but Thunstrom would end up tallying an empty netter, and securing her hat trick.

Not much to say about this game, other than they will get to play Minnesota again tomorrow at 130p.
