New Jersey Devils (24-27-10 58pts) vs Washington Capitals (37-18-6 80pts)
Game Recap:
Good afternoon Devils fans! This afternoon your New Jersey Devils host the Washington Capitals who have been struggling lately. New Jersey is coming off a 2-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks and hoping to upset the Caps. They’re also hoping to not be apart of history as Alex Ovechkin is one goal shy of scoring seven hundred goals. In the first period, Jesper Bratt would get the Devils on the board first. Damon Severson would send a stretch pass up the middle to Bratt who would put some nice moves on Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov for the goal. After the first period, the Devils would lead the Capitals 1-0.
Wayne Simmonds helped to extend the Devils lead on the power play. He would tap in a puck sitting near the goal line after Nikita Gusev fired a shot on net. Later on, the Capitals would score on their own power play as Tom Wilson tipped in a John Carlson shot from the point to get the game within one goal. After two periods, the Devils would lead the Capitals 2-1.
Whether you were a Devils fan or a Capitals fan, history was witnessed in the third period as Alex Ovechkin finally got his seven hundredth career goal. Ovechkin got the milestone goal off a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov and fired the puck from the right circle which went behind Devils goalie MacKenzie Blackwood. The Devils got in some penalty trouble but were very fortunate to kill of the penalties they had. However, the Capitals got into their own penalty trouble which eventually cost them the game as Damon Severson scored the game winner on the power play. The Devils would defeat the Capitals by a final score of 3-2 in another close game affair. The Washington Capitals are taking a short day-trip to Newark, New Jersey to take on the Devils on the first night of a back-to-back. The Devils are currently last in the Metropolitan division, though they have won five of their last 10 games, and picked up points in two of the five losses. The Capitals defeated the Devils by a score of 5-2 the last time these two teams met, back on January 18th.
The Washington Capitals lost (sounds familiar, eh?) to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, 3-4 in overtime. Washington’s newest addition, Brenden Dillon, made his debut on the top defensive pair with John Carlson, and his performance was impressive. Brendan Leipsic was the healthy scratch, as was Jonas Siegenthaler, and Travis Boyd filled in on the 4LW spot. Alex Ovechkins’ quest for 700 continued, and he got that much closer as he scored goal number 699 at the 7:29 mark of the first period. His 41st goal of the season puts him within two of Auston Matthews and David Pastrnak (43). Shea Weber, who was awarded the title of ‘Hardest Shot’ at this years’ All Star weekend, tied the game with just under two minute remaining in the first. Lars Eller broke the tie with his 15th of the season at the 17:02 mark of the second, but just over a minute later, Brendan Gallagher tied it up at two a-piece. Ben Chiarot gave Montreal their first lead of the night 30 seconds into the third period. By now, Caps and Habs fans alike believed the game was over, but Washington had other plans. With the goaltender pulled, and 21 seconds remaining, Tom Wilson scored the game-tying goal to give the Capitals a chance to earn at least one point. Ben Chiarots’ second goal of the game would end up being the game-winner in overtime to win it for Montreal. The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Canadiens, and extended Washingtons’ to two. Both teams received one power play each, but neither converted. Braden Holtby made 28 saves on 32 shots and dropped his third game in four starts. Ilya Samsonov will get the start for Washington versus the Devils.
The New Jersey Devils defeated the San Jose Sharks 2-1, also on Thursday. The Devils have five wins in their last 10 games, but are currently last in the Metro. Tim Heed got the Sharks on the board first with his first goal of the season at the 7:22 mark of the first period. Jesper Bratt tied it for the Devils late in the 2nd period with his 12th of the season. Just short of the three-minute mark of the third period, PK Subban scored the eventual-game winner. Subban’s name has floated around the trade rumor mill (yes, again), as the defenseman has seemingly struggled to find his place. The Devils did trade Blake Coleman to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a first round pick and a prospect, and Andy Greene to the Islanders. Kyle Palmieri leads the team with 22 goals and 41 points. The Sharks out-shot the Devils 37 to 25, but MacKenzie Blackwood allowed just one goal on 37 shots. Blackwood is expected to get the start for the Devils.
The New Jersey Devils are without Sami Vantanen (DL, undisclosed), Miles Wood (OUT, illness), and Will Butcher (OUT, upper body). The Devils placed goaltender Louis Domingue on waivers on Thursday. Brendan Leipsic is back in the lineup, Jonas Siegenthaler also returns to the lineup, and Radko Gudas and Travis Boyd are the healthy scratches.
Coverage of the game begins at 12:00pm with Caps Faceoff Live, followed by Caps Pregame Live at 12:30pm, all on NBCSN/NBCSWA, with puck drop shortly after 1:00pm.
New Jersey Devils (23-27-10 56pts) vs San Jose Sharks (26-30-4 56pts)
Game Recap:
After losing to the St.Louis Blues the other night, the New Jersey Devils hope to get back in the win column against the San Jose Sharks. Tonight was a tight defensive game with very low scoring. Defenseman Tim Heed of the Sharks would get the lone goal of the period and his first of the year. After the first period, the Devils would trail the Sharks 1-0.
Jesper Bratt would even the score up for the Devils and score his twelfth of the season. Pavel Zacha would send a stretch pass up the middle to Bratt who would put on some nice moves to deceive Sharks goalie Aaron Dell and get the puck by him for the goal. After the second period, the score would be tied 1-1 between the two teams.
In the third period, PK Subban would notch the game winner on the power play as he snapped a shot from the point which went behind the Sharks goalie. New Jersey held their own defensively and played stellar defense to give them the win by a final score of 2-1. The Devils are back in action on Saturday against the Washington Capitals for an early 1 o’clock start.
New Jersey Devils (22-27-10 54pts) @ St. Louis Blues (33-17-10 76pts)
Game Recap:
Good evening Devils fans! Your New Jersey Devils head out for one game on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champions in the St. Louis Blues. New Jersey is coming off a comeback win this past Sunday night as they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in a shootout 4-3. Just like their most recent game, goaltending is what kept this game from being a total disaster for New Jersey. Louis Domingue kept the first period scoreless as did his counterpart Jordan Binnington of the Blues.
Finally, Ivan Barbashev got the scoring going as he scored his eighth goal of the season as he swept the loose puck into the back of the net. Barbashev’s goal was the only one of the period as the Blues would take a 1-0 lead into the third period. Louis Domingue played fantastic for the Devils but unfortunately they weren’t able to get their offense going.
St. Louis put this game away for good in the third period as Ivan Barbashev would score his second goal of the night and Jayden Schwartz would add his nineteenth goal of the season. Unfortunately for the Devils, they just could not get anything going offensively. They had a four minute power play as Blues forward Robert Thomas was called for a double minor for high sticking Devils player Nick Merkely. Jordan Binnington was excellent tonight in goal for the Blues as he had to only make seventeen saves in his shutout victory. New Jersey would lose by a final score of 3-0. The Devils are back in action on Thursday night as they return home to host the San Jose Sharks.

New Jersey Devils (22-26-10 54pts) vs Columbus Blue Jackets (30-18-12 72pts)
Game Recap:
Good evening Devils fans! Tonight your New Jersey Devils welcome in the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Garden State. There were definitely some changes to the lineup right before game time. One of the biggest news of the day was Devils captain Andy Greene being dealt to the New York Islanders for a second round pick and prospect David Quenneville. Later on, Blake Coleman was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a first round pick and highly touted prospect Nolan Foote. Also, Devils star center Nico Hischier returns to the lineup after being out with a knee injury since February 1st’s game against the Dallas Stars. Hischier returns to the top line with Jesper Bratt and Kyle Palmieri.
The first period was not a good one for the Devils as they quickly got down 2-0 to the Blue Jackets. Andrew Peeke scored his first NHL goal and Zach Werenski scored his eighteenth goal of the season. Those were the only goals of the period.
New Jersey’s fourth line quickly tied things up 2-2 as they got goals from Joey Anderson and Nicholas Merkley. The Devils second goal would be Merkley’s first National Hockey League goal. Moments later, Kyle Palmieri would break the tie on a beautiful passing sequence between himself Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt to give the Devils their first lead of the game. New Jersey would remain ahead 3-2 going into the third period.
However, Kevin Stenlund of the Blue Jackets tied the score 3-3 at the 8:45 mark. There would be no other scoring in the third period which would force overtime between the two teams. Each team had their chances to win the game in overtime however, the goaltending on both sides was the story of this game and kept it tied heading into a shootout.
The shootout would go all the way to the seventh round, where Jesper Brett would be the hero and score the game winning shootout goal. MacKenzie Blackwood was the biggest hero of this game as he made 52 saves in the victory. His amazing performance willed his team to victory as the distractions of today’s trades loomed over the team. The Devils are back in action on Tuesday night as they leave the Garden State to take on the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues.

Good evening once again Devils fans! The New Jersey Devils have now completed another trade this evening as their rebuilding and youth movement continues. This time the New Jersey Devils have traded winger Blake Coleman to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Here are the details of this trade:
Trade Details
TRADE ALERT: The #NJDevils have acquired Nolan Foote and a first-round pick from Tampa Bay, in exchange for Blake Coleman.https://t.co/SjslAGr1Bg
Again, in his 2nd presser in the last few hours #NJDevils Fitzgerald names Hischier, Hughes and Blackwood as the future:
"We dont need to start over. We’ve got two big pieces & you saw the other piece in goal tonight. We have holes. My job, if it’s my job, is to fix some holesâ€
#NJDevils Tom Fitzgerald: “The asset return [for Coleman] is something that makes a lot of sense for the organization. I know it’s not a popular move, I know that.â€
Coleman on what he can add, “I have a playoff type of compete and a will to win. Any little extra I can bring I’m happy to do it.†He said he’s familiar with Cooper’s style of play and system playing against him in juniors. https://t.co/XklFQdxGjb
Big, strong, good shot, good vision… Seems like a great complement to Hischier and Hughes and in the right age range that Fitzgerald spoke about earlier this evening.
I had some doubts after former GM Ray Shero was fired about keeping Tom Fitzgerald on as the permanent General Manager going forward. Usually it’s best to move on and look for a fresh perspective outside the organization. Then again, take a look at the Washington Capitals for example who hired Brian MacLellan to be their GM. MacLellan was then George McPhee’s protege and then got the General Manager job after McPhee was not retained. The rest became history as the Washington Capitals went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Also, Tom Fitzgerald has had a great reputation as being one of the best up and coming General Managers.
After this trade of Blake Coleman and the earlier trade of Andy Greene, I’m sold on having Tom Fitzgerald being the General Manager going forward. He turned an aging thirty seven year old defenseman into a second round pick and a young defensive prospect in David Quenneville. Fitzgerald then in turn traded Blake Coleman for a first round pick and a highly touted scoring winger prospect in Nolan Foote. The scouting report on Foote holds him in high regard and is exactly what Fitzgerald wants for the Devils going forward. He wants high end young skill that is around the age of young stars Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes to build around. Fitzgerald actually has a plan and a vision going forward that appears to help get the Devils back to their winning ways of winning Stanley Cups. Overall, this trade was great in particular as it gives the Devils another first round pick and a highly touted prospect that they can add to their young core to build around with Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, and MacKenzie Blackwood. It’ll be interesting to see what other moves Fitzgerald makes as the NHL trade deadline quickly approaches on February 24th.
