They’re also hoping to not be apart of history as Alex Ovechkin is one goal shy of scoring seven hundred goals. In the first period, Jesper Bratt would get the Devils on the board first. Damon Severson would send a stretch pass up the middle to Bratt who would put some nice moves on Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov for the goal. After the first period, the Devils would lead the Capitals 1-0.
Wayne Simmonds helped to extend the Devils lead on the power play. He would tap in a puck sitting near the goal line after Nikita Gusev fired a shot on net. The Devils got in some penalty trouble but were very fortunate to kill of the penalties they had. However, the Capitals got into their own penalty trouble which eventually cost them the game as Damon Severson scored the game winner on the power play.
