Late Cava Goal Sinks Beauts

It’s opening weekend for the PHF, and in the second of 3 games today, we find the Toronto Six taking on the Buffalo Beauts. Here is how the 2 teams would line up.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

Early in the first period, the Toronto Six would find themselves on the power play. Where a shot from the point would find the back of the net. The shot coming from Shiann Darkangelo, her first goal of the season. The assists on the play coming from Mikyla Grant-Mentis and Taylor Woods.

Before the end of the period, the Beauts would answer and tie the game up. A nice floated pass from Amy Budde found Missy Segall up the middle. She got to be one on one with the goalie and Segall fired it short side and in the net past Chuli.

Early in the second period, Toronto would strike again and retake the lead. A well executed 2 on 1 would see the shot coming in from Taylor Day, but Jackson didn’t have full control of the puck, and the puck found the stick of Leah Marino, who slotted it home.

Before the end of the second period, the Six would then double their lead. This time the goal would come from Lindsay Eastwood. Eastwood left the penalty box when the backhanded pass got flipped out of the Six’s defensive zone. The puck found the tape of Eastwood, who had a clean breakaway and smoothly slotted the puck through Carly Jackson’s five hole.

Early in the third period, the Buffalo Beauts would get a goal back and cut into the lead. A 2 on 1 while shorthanded, Cassidy Vinkle thrrew a nice area pass, right to the tape of Autumn MacDougall. She got a one on one with Chuli and beat her to the glove side.

3 minutes later, the Beauts would score another goal and tie up the game. Coming up the right side of the ice, Cassidy MacPherson had the puck on her backhand, and with a defender draped all over her was able to get a nice backhanded pass across the crease and onto the tape of Taylor Accursi, who pounded it past Chuli.

But it would be heartbreak for the Beauts, as with a minute left to go in the game. Mikyla Grant-Mentis went up the right side of the offensive zone and found Michela Cava in the slot in-between the defenders. She rifled the shot past Jackson, and it would prove to be the game winner for the Six.

Elaine Chuli for the Six faced 20 shots and made 17 saves, while Carly Jackson for the Beauts faced 30 shots, making 26 saves.

Shelly Shuts Down Whale In Decisive Victory

Today was the first day for Season 7 of the Premier Hockey Federation, and what a way to open up the season by rekindling a rivalry between 2 teams that are close to each other. The Connecticut Whale and the Metropolitan Riveters squared off today in the first of 2 games they’ll play against each other this weekend. Here were the starting lineups for both teams.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

In the first period, it would be the Whale who would draw first blood in the game. A chip in the offensive zone got Wohlfeiler behind the defense and one on one against Sonjia Shelly. Wohlfeiler pulled the puck to the back hand and found the back of the net for the first goal of the game and the first goal of the PHF era.

The lead would only last about 5 minutes, as the Riveters would tie the game up via the power play. A shot from the right half boards by Rebecca Russo would find the stick of Emily Janiga in front of the net and the chip would get past Ives. The first period would come to an end with both teams tied at 1.

In the second period, the Riveters would break the tie and take the lead for the first time in the game. Rachel Ade got the puck at the point, took the shot, which was stopped by Ives. However, the rebound sat perfectly for a hard charging Kelly Babstock, who put the rebound home in the back of the net.

Early in the third period, there was an incident between Kelly Babstock and Emily Fluke in the corner. It lead to the first game ejection of the PHF era.

Babstock given 2 for Roughing; Fluke was ejected from the game.

It would take till late in the third period before the Riveters would double their lead. The turnover in the neutral zone by the Whale led to Rebecca Russo blasting a shot from just above the right circle. The resulting shot flew past Ives’ shoulder, hit the corner of the net, and popped the water bottle.

Madison Packer would add the empty net goal, giving the Riveters a 4-1 win. There were 14 penalties called in the game, 8 on the Whale, and 6 on the Riveters. Abbie Ives faced 20 shots and made 17 saves, while Sonjia Shelly faced 21 shots, making 20 saves.

3 Questions:

How will Mikyla Grant-Mentis perform in her sophomore season?

There is a reason why MGM was a MVP of the then NWHL last season. In the six games she played, she scored an impressive 5 goals and added another 4 assists for 9 points on the year. In the 1 playoff game she played, she added another goal and a assist to her ledger. That’s just in 7 total games played last season. Now with a full 20 game season upcoming for her, the sky is the limit. She now also has a great assistant coach in Angela James to help guide her throughout the year. Goalies beware.

Will the secondary scoring continue for the Six?

I ask this because during the season in Lake Placid, there was an impressive 16 players that registered at least a point during the season. A few of the players are still there for year 2 with the Six; however, some of the depth scoring has departed. Also, there was a coaching change from last season to this season. It will be interesting to see how Mark Joslin deploys his team. Will the team hit the ice running, or will it take a couple of games and go through some growing pains, to gain their chemistry?

Where does Tera Hofmann fit in the goalie room?

It’s almost a certainty that Elaine Chuli will be the number 1 goalie for the Toronto Six. Considering last year, she posted a 1.61 GAA and a .936 Save Percentage with 1 shutout last year. So, who will take the reigns as backup? Well, Samantha Ridgewell was with the Six last season too, posting a 4.62 GAA and a .800 Save Percentage, while Tera Hofmann with the Riveters posted a 3.00 GAA and a .917 Save Percentage. A 20 game schedule upcoming this season; again, we know it will be Chuli who will get most of the work. How will the backup duties be split? Interesting decisions for Joslin and James to make.

Will the Whitecaps please release their roster and make this easier?

3 Legit Questions:

What kind of role does Lexie Laing fill?

Late in the offseason, the Whitecaps announced the signing of forward Lexie Laing. She played 2 years with the Boston Pride amassing 30 points in 31 games played (13 goals and 17 assists). The Whitecaps already have great offensive firepower in Allie Thunstrom, Jonna Curtis, Audra Morrison, Meghan Lorence, Haley Mack. Now you’re adding Laing to this awesome mixture, it will be very interesting to see where she slots in and how well she’ll contribute.

How will the defense look?

One of the key losses in this position is Amanda Boulier. The stalwart defender was great at getting clutch goals and being very steady in the D zone. The main core of the defense is still here for the Whitecaps. Emma Stauber, Chelsey Brodt-Rosenthal, Winny Brodt-Brown, Sara Bustad. However, there are some new pieces coming in like Mak Langei, Taylor Turnquist, Patricia Marshall. Of the new players coming in, Turnquist already has PHF experience, having played for the Boston Pride. It will be interesting to see how the coach uses his young defenders, and which veterans get paired up with them.

Will the Whitecaps make it back to the Cup Final?

It is amazing to think that this will be the fourth year the Whitecaps have been in the league. The first year they came in, they won the Isobel Cup against the Buffalo Beauts. Their second year, they made it to the finals against the Boston Pride, but due to Covid, the game was never played. Last season, they once again made it to the finals, against the Pride. They came up short that season, but played a heck of a game. Will they make the finals this season upcoming? It’s entirely possible. As of writing this coming up to midnight on 11/3, they still haven’t announced a goalie. Although we can assume it will be Leveille and Morse. They have the offensive firepower, and great goaltending to lead them on a deep run once again.

*EDIT* As of around 11a, the Whitecaps have finally announced a goalie. Signing their draft pick Jenna Brenneman.

*EDIT* Looks like Leveille is back!

3 Questions:

What are the Riveters?

It’s a weird question, but not an unfair question. We only got to see 3 games from the Riveters in Lake Placid before the Covid changed everything. So what did we see in those 3 games? A shutout win against the Toronto Six. (The shutout was posted by Sonjia Shelly). A thrilling 4-3 win against the Connecticut Whale. And a low scoring 1-0 defeat to the Minnesota Whitecaps, in which the winning goal was scored very late in the game, while the Riveters were on the penalty kill. Last season is a huge case of what could have been. How would the rest of the season would’ve played out? If they participated in the playoffs, how would that have turned out? Heading into this season with a few good pieces, is it going to be more of what we saw last season? Or will there be some growing pains as they try to regain their footing?

Who will emerge as the number 1 goalie?

At the time of the training camp, the Riveters roster had 3 goalies: Sonjia Shelly, incoming Brooke Wolejko, and Cassandra Goyette. If those names are familiar, they were the goalies of the Connecticut Whale in 2019-2020. Goyette that season had 2 games played with a 7.50 GAA and a .800 Save Percentage. Shelly during that season had 13 Games played with a 3.99 GAA and a .894 Save Percentage. Wolejko had 14 games played with a 3.62 GAA and a .914 Save Percentage. The goalie room had good chemistry that season. Last season, Shelly (who was the number 1) posted in 3 games a 0.50 GAA and a .987 Save Percentage, while Wolejko in 3 games had a 4.39 GAA and a .833 Save Percentage. Both Shelly and Wolejko are proven veterans in the league, it will be interesting to see what Ivo Mocek with splitting time.

Where will the scoring come from?

Last season in Lake Placid, the leading goal scorer and point leader of the team was Leila Kilduff, a defender. In 2019-2020, the leading scorer was forward Madison Packer, as she scored 13 goals and added 21 assists in 24 games. Last season, she was held scoreless. The team kinda goes as she goes, as Packer is the heart and soul of the Riveters. Secondary scoring is a must on the team, and the Riveters last season had 12 players that registered at least a point in the 3 games.

3 Questions:

How will Taylor Girard handle her rookie year?

For the first time in the team’s history, the Whale had the number 1 overall selection, which they chose forward Taylor Girard from Quinnipiac University. She had a rather successful college career, playing 5 years, her first 3 at Lindenwood University and her last 2 years at Quinnipiac University. During her senior year, she was second on the team in terms of points (16 points) and tied with Taylor House for the team lead in goals (7 goals). What will be the talented forward’s role on the team be? And will she suffer an adjustment period as she gets used to the PHF game speed? It is worth pointing out that in the first two preseason games, she’s played on a line with veteran Cailey Hutchison and rookie Emma Polaski.

How will Abbie Ives handle the number 1 role?

During the Lake Placid season, Abbie Ives was splitting duties with Brooke Wolejko. Now that Wolejko has joined the Riveters for the season upcoming, the clear choice for the number 1 Whale goalie is Ives. She posted some good numbers during her rookie campaign, a 2.01 GAA and a .936 Save Percentage in 4 games. With a 20 game season upcoming, how many of those games will be her’s to lead the team?

Who will lead the team in goals?

Last season, Katelynn Russ lead the team in goals with 2. The previous season before that, it was Emma Vlasic who lead the team with 9 goals. While Russ left to join the Boston Pride, that would certainly open the door for Vlasic to take back her scoring title. However, late in the offseason, the Whale added another leading goal scorer from their 2017-18 campaign in Emily Fluke (4 goals). Scoring has been an issue with the Whale, as they have been on the minus end of the goal differential in every season except the founding season back in 2015. Who will lead the way for them during this season upcoming?

3 Questions:

Will there be any adjustment period with Berndtsson?

Sometimes with rookies, there is a bit of an adjustment period. However, that’s not always the case with goalies; with prime examples being Meeri Raisanen and fellow Swede Lovisa Selander. They just hit the ground running and playing excellent hockey, giving their team an advantage. After boasting some impressive numbers in Sweden in the SDHL, including being a SDHL Champion in 2016-17, will those stats translate to North America?

Will Suokko thrive in the North American game?

Again, talking about the adjustment period to a new environment, Jenna Suokko coming over from Finland, will she hit the ground running, or will it take a couple of games to get into the flow of things? If you look at the last 4 seasons she’s played in the Naisten Liiga, she raked up 111 Games, scoring 60 goals and adding another 66 assists, for a grand total of 126 points. Much like with Berndtsson, will those numbers translate to the North American game?

How far will the Beauts go?

This seems like kinda a ridiculous question since the basic answer is: considering how well the team plays, however far they want to go. It’s not an unfair question though. During the campaign in Lake Placid, the Beauts didn’t get off to a great start, but were coming on late. Due to unfortunate circumstances, they were not allowed to participate in the playoffs, where who knows what would’ve happened. Any givin’ day right? GM Nate Oliver has built himself a pretty interesting team, with a solid mix of veterans and rookies. How far can the team really go?

Since the National Women’s Hockey League started in 2015 to the now Premier Hockey Federation in 2021, there have been 4 different champions. Who will step up to be the Number 1 goalie?

Lovisa Selander posted a 1.47 GAA and a .947 Save Percentage in 7 regular season games, while also posting a 2.50 GAA and a .909 Save Percentage in route to an Isobel Cup. While returning to the Pride is former number 1 goalie, Katie Burt. In her 16 games with the Pride, she posted a 2.26 GAA with a .920 Save Percentage. Both goalies have put up great stats, and both deserve to start, it will be very interesting to see how Head Coach Paul Mara will split the tandem in net.

How will Sammy Davis’ sophomore campaign turnout?

It’s worrisome for some players heading into their second year, as they don’t want to fall into the “sophomore slump.” The 2020 first overall pick by the Boston Pride had a rather impressive rookie year. Where she was fifth on the team in points (5 total) and the leading scorer (4 goals) for the Pride in just 7 regular season games. With a 20 game schedule upcoming, will her roll on the team get expanded, leading to more scoring opportunities?

The Pendrys Files – An Interview With The Six

The Toronto Six has been a confusing entity to fans this year. It is a team that has made several laudable hires including inking the legendary Angela James as an Assistant Coach and a fan favorite like Saroya Tinker but at the same time carries with it an issue since last spring that many cannot look past. Then many hockey fans were surprised or angered to learn that Toronto Six President Digit Murphy had signed on to a group with a transphobic political agenda. Within a week of the discovery, Murphy had quit the group and the Six had issued a statement in support of trans and non-binary individuals. There were unanswered questions however, and tensions were reignited by a recent interview with Murphy on Rink Stories. With the PHF about to unveil a new transgender and non-binary inclusion policy in coming weeks, Six team owner Johanna Boynton and President Murphy agreed to an interview about the issue, the Six’s learning process since then, and their plans regarding inclusivity moving forward.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

D.F. Pendrys: What is your perception of why fans were upset in April and have continued to be until today?

Johanna Boynton: I think that we offended some members of our community and we have been working collectively as a board and as a staff and as an organization really to reassess our policy in transgenders athletes and non-binary athletes and really drill down on what is important to us, incredibly important to us. And to try to, one take ownership and accountability for the disappointment, but two we’re doing very careful work which means it’s taking more time probably than many of our fans and our community would like to hear from us with regards to the work we’re doing. And so I think that some of that has resulted in some frustration which we hope that we can attend to in the coming week with the work that we’re doing.

Digit Murphy: To clarify my position with the Women’s Sport Policy Group. I think they were disappointed because we let people down and we need to do better. I mean I made the position to support people. You know Donna de Varona and some of the people I knew…Martina Navratilova That was the extent of my involvement. Literally just said ‘put my picture on the website.’ I did not take the time to become informed about what my name was associated with and that was a mistake. My support of some people divided others. I didn’t mean to divide others. That’s not what I’m about. That’s not what the Toronto Six is about. That’s not inclusivity. And I disassociated my self from the group. My focus is on the Toronto Six. I’m fully dedicated to our mission and our values. I think that’s why people were really upset. About that women’s sports policy group which I disassociated myself with.

DFP: At this juncture Digit, are you aware of the Women Sport’s Policy [Working] Group’s agenda and the policies that did offend the community?

DM: I disassociated with that group and that’s all I want to say about it…I mean what would be a good answer. I really want to say this right. Ya know. What I’ve learned through the Athlete Ally discussion that we had was society and sports have a lot of work to do in their space. Over the last few months I’ve learned a lot about the challenges members of the community faces. And I want to help. And that’s really where I want to go with this. Like I don’t want to go back with the Women’s Sports Policy, I want to move forward with the Toronto Six and what our core values represent which are inclusion, education, and empowerment. And that’s where I want to go, I want to go forward.

JB: I think that’s the work that we’ve been doing. We want to do more and it’s a journey for us right? We’re always learning. We’re looking forward the work ahead of us, and the work with Athlete Ally, and Anne Lieberman and Chris Mosier. We’ve participated in webinars that are trans inclusion in sport. We’ve spent time attending trans athlete panels with Athlete Ally discussion and Anne Lieberman moderating. We’ve sat on Schuyler Bailar webinars on trans athletes legislation. We’ve had assignments like the SI article “Living Non-binary in a Binary Sports World,” I’m sure you’re aware of that article it’s got a lot of attention. Sarah Spain did a podcast on what Athlete Ally is doing. And The Daily did a trends in anti-trans legislation and there are all kinds of things that we keep tending to and learning and reading and listening. I think to Digit’s point we’ve talked a lot about moving forward and realizing there’s a lot of work to do in this space. We feel like we can be not only helpful but more inclusive and we’re excited about that. We’re trying to do it very carefully, very thoughtfully.

DFP: Will you be providing more about what has gone on with those trainings out so we get an idea of what has been learned and worked on by The Six during this time period?

JB: Yeah, (Noted it was part of a bigger conversation). Around the Federation and the board and the owners. It’s a very honest. It’s a very collaborative group of owners and organizations and very committed to this topic and very committed to getting right. And that means we that have to go carefully through our conversations because we are a very healthy, sort of respectful group, but that means also that not everyone has the same lines of education or thought. And its getting to where we really are a collaborative group but it takes time. Just as it took time to get a unanimous feel around the re-brand. That was months in the making. This likewise, months in the making, in particular, these policies that we’re working on, we really want to reflect inclusion, and comfort for everybody. Representation matters. It’s really important to the league and to The Six that we get it right. And that people feel more included and know we can do it better and that’s what we want to be sure to do, and that takes time and that takes conversation and reflection and thoughtful conversation to be sure we are doing it well.

At this point Digit Murphy asked the author what they would like to see but due to time constraints the author politely declined and said they would prefer to provide feedback outside of the interview.

DFP: I do have to followup the recent interview on Rink Stories. There was a moment in which you were asked the PHF Transgender policy and you expressed confusion between that and the Women’s Sports Policy [Working Group] agenda. I just wanted to ask. You are familiar with the PHF transgender policy and the difference between the Women’s Sports policy agenda correct?

DM: Well we’re still working on the policy for the PHF.

DFP: I mean the current one.

DM: The current PHF policy.

DFP: Yes, the current one in place.

DM: Well, I’m only understanding that that is going to be changed sooner rather than later. That’s the one that I’m looking forward to hearing.

DFP: I’m just asking if you’re familiar with the current policy that is in in place. It is going to be changed. But it is in place. Just in how it’s difference from what what…because you had asked the interviewer what the differences were between the PHF transgender policy that is in place and the policies of the Women’s Sport Policy Working Group. I was just wondering if you were aware of the differences?

DM: Oh yeah yeah yeah, I see where you’re going. Honestly, when I was talking to the guy. He just went there, I was a little taken aback. It is my responsibility to understand and I did not articulate my answer properly in that interview and I blew that as a human. Totally was not on point there.

DFP: I do have one other question. You did when responding to a different question describe a group as ‘negative nelly drama creators.” What group of people were you specifically referring to by that designation?

DM: I was way out of line there. That’s not. That’s not right. I should not…It was inappropriate of me to marginalize anyone for their beliefs and opinions. My comments were inappropriate, and I apologize for that.

DFP: Do you feel that you owe people an apology for being part of the working group for the short period that you were?

DM: “ think that yeah. I do. I definitely should have researched it more as the President and I apologize for. I am so sorry that I let anyone down honestly. I don’t know if you watched our dance videos. This is really about having fun and celebrating women’s hockey, and celebrating education, (unintelligible), empowerment. To be honest it crushes me to even…it makes sad. I don’t want to be represented like this. I want to help. I’m all about helping women create opportunity. I don’t want to get into it, but thank you for this interview.

DFP: Do you think the apology should have come sooner?

DM: Ya know. We’re all on a journey right? I can’t go back. I’m learning everyday. All we can do is look to the future and move forward and that’s what this interview is all about. Again thank you.

JB: And if I can just add to that. I hear what you’re saying D.F. But we really it has a great opportunity for us to be more reflective about how we illustrate our values through our actions, our words, our policies all that. So this is opportunity to do better. We (unintelligible)… case in point of a lot of hard work to say one, however they identify, one to be inclusive, feel included, and comfortable here and likewise our actions, our policies, and our words should reflect the same. And so this for us just a great opportunity…(unintelligible). Because we do believe transgender, non-binary athletes should see equal opportunities to every other athlete to be competing in PHF. And we gotta make sure that all aligns with all the work we’re doing. From All the people working here to our policies to all that we put out there. And that’s as I said it’s a journey. We’re really serious and (unintelligible). We’re very excited to have the opportunity to talk about some of this stuff. Because we care deeply about, and about increasing inclusivity that doesn’t marginalizing anybody.

DFP: You said being excited about talking about it there was a very long period where there was not a lot of discussion this issue and requests for interview were not met and issues were not replied to by your media person. What was the reasoning for the lack of response at the time?

JB: Respectfully you know we have an opportunity here to connect today and appreciate you have a platform for this opportunity and that we can be in here and have a conversation. I think looking forward is the better bet in our journey as we learn and grow.

DFP: When will we begin to see more of the initiatives coming that will be about inclusivity from the [Toronto Six]?

JB: First and foremost, we plan to have a revised Trans Athlete and Non-binary Athlete policy coming out before this season. We hope to make that announcement in the coming weeks of what that is, so people can see and evaluate the work that we have been doing for the past several months. That’s been in close consultation with Athlete Ally and Anne Lieberman and that whole group. Again it’s careful careful work and we really want to get it right. It will absolutely be out before our season begins so that everybody will have an opportunity to see that. And then moving forward with partnerships and the like that will be the next step in the work that we’re doing. I hope we’ll see much of that in the coming season. Because we are in conversations with many about how we can do that. And again, just want to be working with people who want to join us in that and how to join us in that. There’s a number of ways that we’re looking at.

Audra (née Richards) Morrison has re-signed with the Whitecaps; this will be her third season with the team after making her professional debut with the Riveters in the 2018-19 season.

“Audra has been a strong offensive player for us that battles hard. She is strong in front of the net and has been helpful for us winning net-front battles,” said Minnesota co-head coach Ronda Engelhardt. “She will continue to add depth to our offense.”

Morrison has been an integral part of the Whitecaps during her time with the team, especially during the abbreviated season in Lake Placid last year. The Maplewood, MN native had a point-per-game average in four games at LP, picking up a goal and three assists. She was nearly as productive during the 2019-20 season, scoring 20 points (9G, 11A) in 24 regular-season games. That performance was good enough to get her a nod for the 2020 All-Star Game. Morrison was also a part of the Whitecaps’ Isobel Cup championship run that same season.

Before turning pro, Morrison played four seasons for the University of Maine, where she broke the team record for most games played with 132 total. She finished her career with 70 points (45G, 25A) and left her name in the record books; her 45 career goals were the fifth most in team history.

“I am extremely excited to be playing another season with the Whitecaps. I take huge pride in being a member of this club, as they are all like family to me,” said Morrison on rejoining Minnesota. “Our team is hungry to get back on the ice and compete for the Isobel Cup. See you on the ice as Audra Morrison #21. Roll Caps!”

St. Paul, MN- The Minnesota Whitecaps have inked their top pick from the 2021 NWHL Draft.

Defender Mak Langei has signed a deal with the Whitecaps for the upcoming 2021-22 Premier Hockey Federation season. Langei was the Whitecaps’ first-round pick at the most recent draft, going sixth overall.

“Being drafted and signing with the Whitecaps is an opportunity I am extremely grateful for,” said Langei on the start of her pro career. “To be able to not only keep playing the game I love, but to also continue paving the path for future generations is something that all athletes wish to be part of.”

Langei has played her entire career in Minnesota, and she’ll continue that trend with the Whitecaps. The East Forks, MN native most recently played for Bemidji State University. During her four years there, she posted 47 points (11G, 36A) in 130 career games played, and served as the team’s captain as a senior. Langei also played one year with the USA U18 national team at the 2015-16 World Junior Championships. She finished that tournament with one assist in five games and won gold with Team USA.

“I’m beyond thankful for not only those involved with the Whitecaps organization but also everyone in my support system, especially my family,” said Langei. “I’m excited to get things started and learn from my teammates both on and off the ice.”

Buffalo:

The Beauts announced that they are bringing in original PHF defender Elena Orlando into their roster. Orlando played for the Riveters in the first year of the league, then spent the next 5 seasons with the Whale.

BEAUTS BRING ORLANDO OUT OF RETIREMENT

Buffalo, NY- The Buffalo Beauts announced a big move by signing an original NWHL/PHF player. Defender Elena Orlando has decided to come out of retirement and join Buffalo’s blue line for her seventh straight season in the league. The 29-year-old stay-at-home defender is an original member of the Metropolitan Riveters from the inaugural 2015-16 season. Orlando followed that up with five straight seasons for the Connecticut Whale. Now she will make Buffalo her third destination in her PHF career.

“After retiring, the feeling of being done never really set in,” Orlando said. “I still had the desire to play and compete. When I was approached with the opportunity in Buffalo, looking at the great organization they have and the strong team they put together, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. ”

Orlando is known for her defensive prowess and shot-blocking ability. In 89 career regular season PHF games she has gone 0-7-7 for scoring.  In 2019-20 Orlando tied for fifth in the league in blocked shots with 23 stops in 24 regular season games. In the abbreviated 2020-21 season, she blocked seven shots in only four games. Her longevity and defensive prowess have seen Orlando be a recipient of multiple PHF honors. In 2017 she was Connecticut’s winner of the league’s Foundation Award. 2020 would see her selected to participate in the All-Star Game.

“It is a great opportunity for our organization to have added such a well-respected and steadfast player like Lando,” said Beauts GM Nate Oliver. “She has been in the league since its very beginning, and that is a testament to both her ability level and her dependability. You don’t simply play nearly 100 games in the PHF (96 games regular season and playoffs combined) without being a topnotch player who has remained relevant as women’s hockey continues to grow. Very few players in the world like Elena.”

Orlando played her collegiate career with Quinnipiac University from 2010-11 through 2013-14. With the Bobcats she went 3-8-11 for scoring in 85 career NCAA games. Orlando played the 2014-15 season in Sweden for Sundsvall/TimrÃ¥ in the SDHL. There she raised her offense by scoring five goals and four assists for nine points in 14 postseason contests.

Orlando is very excited to be joining the Beauts and having the opportunity to finally raise the Isobel Cup.

“I can’t wait to start practices and training with my new teammates,” she said. “They’ve made a lot of changes in the off-season, brought in some big pieces, and I feel like this is a team people should be excited about. I’m really thrilled to be part of this organization.”
