3 Questions:

What are the Riveters?

It’s a weird question, but not an unfair question. We only got to see 3 games from the Riveters in Lake Placid before the Covid changed everything. So what did we see in those 3 games? A shutout win against the Toronto Six. (The shutout was posted by Sonjia Shelly). A thrilling 4-3 win against the Connecticut Whale. And a low scoring 1-0 defeat to the Minnesota Whitecaps, in which the winning goal was scored very late in the game, while the Riveters were on the penalty kill. Last season is a huge case of what could have been. How would the rest of the season would’ve played out? If they participated in the playoffs, how would that have turned out? Heading into this season with a few good pieces, is it going to be more of what we saw last season? Or will there be some growing pains as they try to regain their footing?

Who will emerge as the number 1 goalie?

At the time of the training camp, the Riveters roster had 3 goalies: Sonjia Shelly, incoming Brooke Wolejko, and Cassandra Goyette. If those names are familiar, they were the goalies of the Connecticut Whale in 2019-2020. Goyette that season had 2 games played with a 7.50 GAA and a .800 Save Percentage. Shelly during that season had 13 Games played with a 3.99 GAA and a .894 Save Percentage. Wolejko had 14 games played with a 3.62 GAA and a .914 Save Percentage. The goalie room had good chemistry that season. Last season, Shelly (who was the number 1) posted in 3 games a 0.50 GAA and a .987 Save Percentage, while Wolejko in 3 games had a 4.39 GAA and a .833 Save Percentage. Both Shelly and Wolejko are proven veterans in the league, it will be interesting to see what Ivo Mocek with splitting time.

Where will the scoring come from?

Last season in Lake Placid, the leading goal scorer and point leader of the team was Leila Kilduff, a defender. In 2019-2020, the leading scorer was forward Madison Packer, as she scored 13 goals and added 21 assists in 24 games. Last season, she was held scoreless. The team kinda goes as she goes, as Packer is the heart and soul of the Riveters. Secondary scoring is a must on the team, and the Riveters last season had 12 players that registered at least a point in the 3 games.
