Third Period Comeback Falls Short

The second game of the series between the Toronto Six and the Connecticut Whale took place this afternoon. Toronto won the first game by a final score of 5-1. Here is how the two teams would line up.

There was no scoring in the first period; however, it was a pretty even matchup, as both teams registered seven shots on net. With both goalies coming up with the answers to the offensive chances.

In the second period, we would get the first goal of the game, it was provided by the home team. A pass from the corner by Mikyla Grant-Mentis would find the tape of Shiann Darkangelo in front of the net and driven by Abbie Ives.

Three minutes later, the Toronto Six would double their lead. This time the goal would come from Taylor Davison. It would be Davison’s first goal of the season. A beautiful rush up the right side of the ice by Darkangelo, she would feed a pass to the middle and find the stick of Davison, who put the shot over Ives’ glove.

Before the end of the second period, the Toronto Six would add another goal. Their third of the period, and a run of eight unanswered goals. A shot by Darkangelo was blocked by the Whale defense. The puck was then picked up by Grant-Mentis, who at the top of the right circle moved toward the middle. The reigning MVP then roofed the shot over Ives’ glove and in the net.

This would give the Six a 3-0 lead heading into the third.

In the third period, Connecticut would change goalies, Abbie Ives would be replaced by Jessia Strack.

The Whale would then get on the board and stop the unanswered goal streak. The goal coming from Amanda Crawley, it would be her second goal of the season. A feed from the right side of the ice, behind the net, would find the tape of Crawley in the slot. She would roof the shot over Chuli’s blocker.

Late in the period, the Whale would make it interesting by nabbing their second goal of the game, cutting the lead down to 1. Kennedy Marchment would find the puck in the corner, she would travel up to the left circle. When she got to the dot, she ripped the shot that would get over Chuli’s blocker and in the net.

Curtis’ Pair Silences Pride

For the third time this season, the Minnesota Whitecaps and the Boston Pride played a game against each other. In the previous two matchups, the Boston Pride won both games. Here is how the Whitecaps would line up.

There was no scoring in the first period, as both Amanda Leveille and Katie Burt would shut the door on any offensive chances by both teams. In the second period, it would take till almost the end of the period before we would get the games’ first goal. It would be the Whitecaps who would grab the lead. While Minnesota was short handed, Curtis would rip off the puck at the blue line. She would race up the middle and skate in-between the two defenders. Curtis would then be tripped up between the circles, and while she was sliding on the ice, she managed to tip the puck and place it 5 hole on Katie Burt for the short handed goal.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

That would be all the scoring needed in this game, as both goalies were standing on their heads and keeping the puck out of the net. Late in the game, in an attempt to tie the game, the Pride pulled their goalie for the extra skater. A Pride turnover at the offensive blue line gave the puck to Jonna Curtis, who then added the insurance marker empty net goal. It would be her second goal of the game, and third goal of the season. The goal would also seal the game and preserve the shutout for Amanda Leveille.

Officially on the boxscore states that Katie Burt of the Boston Pride faced 21 shots, making 20 saves; while Amanda Leveille of the Minnesota Whitecaps faced 28 shots, making 28 saves and earning the shutout.

Beauts v. Rivs – Comeback Beauts Down Rivs

Buffalo Beauts (0-1-0 0pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (1-1-0 3pts)

Game Recap:

For the first time since the 2018-19 season the Metropolitan Riveters return to the Barnabas Health Hockey House (Prudential Center Practice Facility) to play hockey, and who better to host in their return there then who they beat for the 2018 Isobel Cup, the Buffalo Beauts. In the first period the Beauts would get themselves into early penalty problems as they would have to do back to back penalty kills to start the game, but the Beauts would stand tall against the Rivs as they would get a great scoring chance shorthanded on the first penalty kill, and on both penalty kills they hold hold the Rivs at bay to kill off both penalties. As the period went on both teams would settle in and both Sonjia Shelly and Carly Jackson would keep both teams off of the scoreboard. Late in the period Kelly Babstock would get called for cross checking to give the Beauts thier first powerplay of the game, but Shelly would keep them off the board as this game would go into the first intermission scoreless.

In a penalty filled second period the Riveters would find themselves on the scoresheet. While neither team would take advantage of their powerplay opportunities, the Rivs would strike first midway through the game as Kendall Cornine would strike for her second of the season to give the Rivs the 1-0 lead. then in a span of 50 seconds Nora Maclaine and Rebecca Russo would score to increase the Riveters lead to three. However, late in the period Anjeica Diffendal would net her first career PHF goal to get the Beauts on the board and cut their deficit to two. Going into the second intermission the Beauts would take a 4 on 3 powerplay opportunity with them.

Then in the third period the Beauts would strike on the powerplay as Dominique Kremer would net a beautiful backhander past Shelly to give the Beauts the first powerplay goal of the game and cut the Riveters lead to one. Then moments later Diffendal would net her second of the game to tie the game at three for the Beauts. Frustration would set in as Babstock would take her second consecutive penalty as she would be called for cross checking. On the powerplay the Beauts would generate some really great scoring chances, but Shelly would stand tall to keep the game tied at three. Both teams would trade powerplay opportunities, but neither would be able to capitalize on them as this game would go to overtime tied at three.

In the extra frame it would be Cassidy Vinkle with a sneaky puck slipping five hole through Sonjia Shelly to give the Beauts their first win of the season as they complete the comeback to down the Riveters 4-3.
