News:

  • The New Jersey Devils recalled goaltender Cory Schneider.

 

  • The Department of Player Safety announced that they have fined defenseman Jacob Trouba of the New York Rangers $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for slashing Vince Dunn of the St. Louis Blues.

 

  • The New Jersey Devils announced that they have parted ways with General Manager Ray Shero, and that Tom Fitzgerald will take over general manager duties on an interim basis.

Then in the third period Horvat would score his second of the game to give the Canucks the 4-1 victory.

In Detroit the Buffalo Sabres would come to town to take on the Red Wings. In the first period the Sabres would get a pair of goals from Evan Rodrigues, and a shorthanded tally from Zemgus Girgensons to take the 3-0. Then in the second period Madison Bowey would score for the Wings, but in the third period Zach Bogosian and Rasmus Ristolainen (PPG) would score to secure the Sabres the 5-1 victory.

 

Pittsburgh Penguins v. Arizona Coyotes – 6p EST Start Time

The Arizona Coyotes would host the red hot Pittsburgh Penguins in a highly contested matchup. In the first period Jared McCann would strike early on the powerplay for the Penguins, but Conor Garland would tie the game with his 15th of the season for the Coyotes. Then in the second period Patric Hornqvist would score on the powerplay for the Penguins, but Taylor Hall would net his tenth of the season to tie the game for the Coyotes. In the third period Derek Stepan would score to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game, but a Brandon Tanev goal would tie the game at three and send the game to overtime. After a scoreless five minutes of extra hockey we would see Teddy Blueger score the game winning goal in the shootout and secure the 4-3 victory for the Penguins.

 

Toronto Maple Leafs v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

In Florida the Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs would play in a high scoring affair. In the first period it would be all Florida as Josh Brown, Aleksander Barkov, and Mike Hoffman would score to take the 3-0 lead. Then in the second period the Leafs would respond with goals from Zach Hyman, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares, but the Panthers would get goals from Mike Matheson, Frank Vatrano, Vincent Trocheck, and Jonathan Huberdeau to take the 7-3 lead. In the third period Marner would net his second of the game for the Leafs, but Hoffman’s second of the game would give the Panthers the 8-4 victory.

  • The Boston Pride have signed forward Jordan Juron for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. Juron played this past weekend on a PTO for the Pride.

 

  • The Buffalo Beauts have signed defender Sarah Casorso to a PTO and will play in both games for the Beauts this weekend.

 

  • Also in PTO signing news, the Connecticut Whales have signed defenders Brinna Dochniak and Laurel Hill to PTOs for this weekend.

In the third period the Hurricanes would hold the Coyotes off the board to secure the 3-0 victory.

Then in the third period the Penguins would tie it back up at two as Bryan Rust would score his 18th of the season, and then Evgeni Malkin would score to give the Penguins the 3-2 lead, but Matt Calvert would strike in the final minute of regulation to tie the game at three and send it to overtime. In overtime Jared McCann would score his 11th of the season to give the Penguins the 4-3 victory.

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that forward Justin Williams has signed a one year $700k deal to return to the team for the remainder of this season.

In Tampa Bay the Lightning would host the Vancouver Canucks. In the first period the Canucks would strike first with Elias Pettersson’s 20th of the season, and in the second period Louis Eriksson would strike for the Canucks, however, The Lightning would put up six goals in the second to put a strangle hold on the Canucks. Tyler Johnson, Steven Stamkos (PPG), Alex Killorn, Carter Verhaeghe, Nikita Kucherov, and Erik Cernak would all score to take the commanding 6-2 lead. Then  in the third period Brayden Point would score and Verhaeghe would net two more goals to complete the hat trick as the Lighting would defeat the Canucks 9-2.

In Florida the Panthers would play host to the Arizona Coyotes, and after a scoreless first period we would see a five goal period that had the Coyotes take the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Carl Soderberg and Lawson Crouse would score to give the Coyotes the 5-2 victory.

In an Original Six matchup, the Detroit Red Wings would host the Montreal Canadiens in a close game. In the first period Artturi Lehkonen would strike shorthanded to give the Canadiens the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Nick Suzuki would score on the powerplay to grow the lead to two, but Frans Nielsen would score for the Wings to bring them back withing one. In the third period Victor Mete would score for Montreal, but goals from Robby Fabbri, Nielsen (second of the game), and Filip Zadina would give the Red Wings the 4-3 win.

In Nashville, the Boston Bruins would spoil John Hynes first game behind the bench of the Predators. In the first period David Pastrnak would net his 32nd of the season. Theni nthe second period Filip Forsberg would score for the Predators, but goals from Danton Heinen and Patrice Bergeron would give the Bruins the two goal lead. In the third period Mikael Granlund would strike on the powerplay for Nashville, but Chris Wagner, David Krejci, and Charlie Coyle would all score to seal the deal and give Boston the 6-2 victory.

In Anaheim the Columbus Blue Jackets would continue their California trip with a game against the Ducks. In the first period both teams would trade goals as Eric Robinson would score for the Jackets and Ryan Getzlaf would score for the Ducks. Then in the second period Ondrej Kase would score for the Ducks, but goals from Nathan Gerbe and Zach Werenski would give the Jackets a 3-2 lead. Then late in the third period Werenski would score again to give the Blue Jackets the 4-2 lead. Kase would score his second of the game as well for the Ducks, but it would not be enough as Columbus would hold on to win 4-3.

Gaetan Haas, Darnell Nurse, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl would all score in the victory.

However, Pavel Buchnevich would strike for his seventh of the season to tie the game at one for the Rangers. Then late in the third period Tyler Myers would net his fourth of the season to give the Canucks the 2-1 victory.

  • The Montreal Canadiens confirmed that forward Brendan Gallagher is out indefinitely due to a concussion.

 

  • The Canadiens also make a pair of trades. The first one being with the Ottawa Senators as they trade defenseman Mike Reilly to the Senators for forward Andrew Sturtz and a 2021 5th Round Pick.

 

  • Then next up the Canadiens would trade San Jose’s 2020 4th Round Pick to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Marco Scandella.

 

  • The Sabres would then flip the draft pick they just received from the Canadiens as they would send it to Calgary for forward Michael Frolik.

In the first period Lawson Crouse would score to give the Coyotes the 1-0 lead, but Jakob Silfverberg would tie the game at one for his 15th of the season. Then in the second period Max Jones would tally to give the Ducks the 2-0 lead. However,  in the third period Christian Dvorak, Brad Richardson, and Carl Soderberg to give the Coyotes the 4-2 victory.

In Colorado the Avalanche would face off with the St. Louis Blues. In the first period Nathan MacKinnon would strike for his 25th of the season for the 1-0 Colorado lead. In the second period Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen (PPG) would score to grow the Avalanche’s lead to three, but the Blues would begin to mount a comeback as Robert Thomaas and Alex Pietrangelo (PPG) would score to get the Blues within one, however, Cale Makar would strike on the powerplay to give the Avalanche the 4-2 lead. In the third period Kadri would net his second of the game, and JT Compher and Joonas Donskoi would both tally to give the Avalanche the 7-2 lead. Thomas would score his second of the game for the Blues, but it would not be enough as the Avalanche would go on to win 7-3.

In Vancouver the Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks would play a close one. In the first period JT Miller would open the scoring for the Canucks, but Connor Murphy would tie the game back up at one. Then in the second period we would see a six goal period as David Kampf, Patrick Kane (PPG), and Jonathan Toews would score for the Blackhawks, and Tanner Pearson, Quinn Hughes (PPG), and Elias Pettersson would score for the Canucks as the game would be tied at four going into the second intermission. In the third period Bo Horvat would break the tie with his 11th of the season, but Kane would net his second of the game to tie the game back up at five, but Adam Gaudette would score to retake the lead for the Canucks, and Horvat would score his second of the game as they would go on to win 7-5.

 

Philadelphia Flyers v. Vegas Golden Knights – 10p EST Start Time

In Vegas the Golden Knights would play host to the Philadelphia Flyers. In the first period the Flyers would get goals from Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny, but goals from Shea Theodore, Max Pacioretty (PPG and EVS), and Jon Merrill to take the 4-2 lead. Then in the second period Cody Glass would score to grow Vegas’ lead to three, but Sean Couturier would tally his 11th of the season to bring the Flyers back within two. In the third period Couturier would net his second of the game while on the powerplay to bring the Flyers within one, but the Golden Knights would hold on for the 5-4 victory.

NHL Three Stars of December

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Month for the month of December.

 

First Star – Jonathan Huberdeau (LW, Florida Panthers)

  • Huberdeau would tie for League lead in points for the month of December with 22 points (6g, 16a) in 13 games to average 1.69 points per game. Huberdeau would record points in 10 of the 13 games, including a back to back four point games, and would record three four point games overall in the month of December.

Second Star – Tristan Jarry (G, Pittsburgh Penguins)

  • Jarry would tie for the League lead in wins for the month with eight, and lead the League in shutouts (3) and goals against average (1.54) in nine games played. Jarry would also register the second best save percentage with .947% to help the Penguins go 10-2-0 for the month.

Third Star – Artemi Panarin (RW, New York Rangers)

  • Panarin would tie with Huberdeau for the League lead in points with 22, and would register ten goals and 12 assists in 14 games played for the Rangers. In his first season with the Rangers Panarin has become the first Ranger since Jaromir Jagr to record back to back months of 20 plus points in their first season with the team.

  • The Buffalo Sabres have announced that forward Jeff Skinner will miss 3-4 weeks due to an upper body injury.

Then in the third period the Leafs would get goals from Pierre Engvall and Matthews (second of the game) to tie the game at four to send the game to overtime which would see Tony DeAngelo score to give the Rangers the 5-4 victory.

 

Montreal Canadiens v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p EST Start Time

In Tampa Bay the Lightning would play host to the Montreal Canadiens. In the first period the Canadiens would dominate the Lighting with them out shooting Tampa at one point 17-0 and goals from Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Max Domi to take the 2-0 lead, but in the final minute of the period Alex Killorn would tally for the Lightning to cut their deficit to one. Then in the second period Ben Chiarot would score for the Canadiens, but Stephen Stamkos, Mitchell Stephens, and Killorn (second of the game) to give the Lightning the 4-3 lead. In the third period Anthony Cirelli would give the Lightning the two goal lead, and while Jordan Weal would score on the powerplay it would not be enough as the Lightning would go on to win 5-4.

  • In the NWHL, the Metropolitan Riveters have announced that they have signed forward Kelly Nash for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, and could make her season debut in the Labatt Blue Buffalo Believes Classic.

 

  • The Chicago Blackhawks announced a slew of injuries on Thursday as Brandon Saad will be out three weeks with a right ankle injury, and both Calvin de Haan (right shoulder) and Brent Seabrook (right shoulder and hip) have been placed on LTIR and will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

 

 

  • The Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Torey Krug on IR, and recalled defensman Steven Kampfer on an emergency basis.
