2019 Ends For The Whale

The Whale skated again today, looking to build upon their performance yesterday, in which they took the undefeated Boston Pride to a shootout.

In the first period, the Boston Pride got off to a fast start again, scoring first in the game. The goal came a minute and a half into the game and it was scored by Lexie Laing, with the assist on the play coming from Taylor Wasylk. About 9 minutes later, the Pride would double their lead. This time the goal came from the former Whale captain Emily Fluke, the assist once again coming from Taylor Wasylk. The period would end with the Pride heavily out-shooting the Whale and having a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, the trend would continue with Boston heavily out-shooting the Whale and being rewarded for it, immediately. Just 16 seconds into the period, the Pride would get another goal, coming from McKenna Brand, and the assist on the play coming from Jillian Dempsey. 8 minutes later, the Pride would get another goal, shorthanded. Lexie Laing would nab her second goal of the game, unassisted, while on the penalty kill. 10 minutes later, before the end of the period, the Whale would get on the board. Fresh off scoring her first NWHL goal yesterday, Hanna Beattie would get her second career NWHL goal of the weekend. The assist on the play came from Kayla Meneghin, who was back in the lineup today.

In the third period, the Pride once again got off to a fast start, getting another goal within 5 minutes of the period. This time the goal came from Jillian Dempsey, who had 3 whacks at the puck before stashing it home. The assists on the play came from Christina Putigna and Kaleigh Fratkin. 6 mintes later the Whale would strike again, through a chaotic event in-front of the Pride net, Sarah Schwenzfeier would get her second goal of the season. The assist on the play came from Sarah Hughson. That would be the closest the Whale would get, as the Pride would get one back 7 minutes later, the goal coming unassisted from Tori Sullivan. The icing on the cake would be a goal coming from the ex-Whale captain Emily Fluke again. The assist on the play would come from Lexie Laing, it would be her third point of the game.

The goalies were once again on top of their games. Selander was the goalie yesterday for the Pride, today was Victoria Hanson. She faced 30 shots and made 28 saves. The Whale once again turned to Brooke Wolejko and she faced 54 shots and made 47 saves.

The Whale will have next weekend off, and their next game will be on January 11th against the Metropolitan Riveters at 630p.

Buffalo Believes Classic Recap – 12/28/2019 – Riveters v. Beauts

Metropolitan Riveters (4-7-0 8pts) v. Buffalo Beauts (6-5-1 13pts)

Game Recap:

In the first official regular season outdoor game in National Women’s Hockey League history, the Buffalo Beauts would play host to the Metropolitan Riveters in the Buffalo Believes Classic at Riverworks in Buffalo, NY. In the first period we would see a chippy one between both teams as we would see a total of six penalties in the period. The Riveters would strike first while at even strength with a Rebecca Morse tally to take the 1-0 lead. Then while on their first powerplay of the game Brooke Baker would tip a Mallory Rushton shot to take the 2-0 lead. The Beauts would go 0 for 3 on the powerplay, and will start the second period with their fourth powerplay still ongoing.

In the second period The Beauts would get themselves into penalty trouble again as the Riveters would get their second powerplay goal of the game as Madison Packer would net her seventh of the season to give the Riveters the 3-0 lead. The Beauts would give the Riveters three more powerplay opportunities, but no more goals would come of it.

In the third period both teams would start at 4 on 4 followed by an abbreviated Beauts powerplay. While the Beauts would not be able to capitalize on the powerplay Taylor Accursi would score to get the Beauts onto the board, but the Riveters would respond immediately with a Brook Avery tally to retake the three goal lead. However, Accursi would score three consecutive goals to get the hat trick, and unofficially a natural hat trick, to produce a four goal game and tie the game at four, but the Riveters would not sit back as Tatiana Shatalova, Madison Packer (second of the game) and Caily Hutchison (ENG) would all score to give the Riveters the exciting 7-4 victory.

Whale Earn A Point Against The Pride

The Whale skated against the Boston Pride today, still looking for their first win on the season.

In the first period, the Pride got off to a great start. They out-shot the Whale a ton in the period, and were rewarded with the first goal of the game. The goal came from McKenna Brand, and the assist on the play came from Jillian Dempsey. The pride would take a 1-0 lead, heading into the second period. Where the domination continued, in which the Pride outclassed the Whale in all aspects of the game. However it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

In the third period, even though the Whale were heavily out-shot, they tied the game up. The goal coming from Hanna Beattie, it would be her first NWHL goal of her career. The assists on the play came from Maddie Evangelous and Shannon Doyle. The game would head to overtime with the score tied 1-1.

In overtime, there was no scoring, and the game would go on to a shootout. In the shootout, it would be the Pride going first. McKenna Brand didn’t score, and the Whale would counter with Elena Gualtieri, she didn’t score. In the second round, the Pride would send out Tori Sullivan, who made a nice deke and scored. The Whale sent out their rookie top scorer Emma Vlasic, she did not score. In the third round, with a chance to end it, the Pride sent out Jillian Dempsey, she was unable to finish. The last hope for the Whale was Kaycie Anderson, who unfortunately was unable to score. The Pride would escape with a 2-1 victory.

Both goalies were spectacular, as the Pride had Lovisa Selander between the pipes. She faced 24 shots and made 23 saves, including stopping all three Whale players in the shootout. The Whale had Brooke Wolejko minding their net today, she faced an incredible 57 shots and made 56 saves. She even stopped 2 Pride players in the shootout.

The next Whale game will be against the Pride again tomorrow at 130p in Danbury, CT.

TXHT Jersey Share – Not Breaking This WALL-ther Down!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition of the TXHT Jersey Share series as we take a look at the new jersey of the NWHL’s Metropolitan Riveters, and their goaltender Sam Walther.

20191222_200844.jpg

Back on September 27th the Riveters unveiled new uniforms for their fifth season. It also embarked a bold move away from a red uniform for the first time since their inaugural season. While at first I was not a fan of the new jersey, but being able to see it in action has changed my tune on that.

20191222_200937.jpg

As seen with the back of the jersey, I purchased goaltender Sam Walther’s jersey. Outside of being a past guest on the TXHT podcast, and a Maryland native, I chose Walther because of her ties to the Washington Capitals, and the fact that she wears number 70 in honor of Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby.

Also Walther has been a literal brick wall for the Metropolitan Riveters this season, including earning VEDA Player of the Week honors earlier this month. Earning the nickname WALLther from both fans and teammates, getting her jersey was a must for me.

You too can purchase a Sam Walther Jersey by going to the NWHL Store today, and every item with Sam’s name on it, she gets a percentage of the sale. So get yours today!

Got a hockey jersey in your collection you’d like to share? Let us know, and we can add it to our TXHT Jersey Share series.

Happy Holidays Whale fans! I hope y’all have a great time and stay safe out there! Connecticut skated again against the defending champion Minnesota Whitecaps, in their second game this weekend.

Unlike yesterdays game, where all the scoring happened in the third period. Today, all the scoring would happen in the first. The goal came from their rookie forward Emma Vlasic. It would be her team leading fifth goal of the season. The assist came from Kayla Meneghin, her third of the season. However, three minutes later, Minnesota would regain the lead. Haylea Schmid would score, it would be her second goal of the season. The assist on the play came from Nicole Schammel.

Connecticut rallied well and mounted a furious comeback, however Amanda Leveille had all the answers for each Whale shot.

Both goalies played well, as Leveille faced 33 shots and made 32 saves, and Sonjia Shelly faced 44 shots and made 42 saves.

The next set of games Connecticut plays will be at home against the undefeated Boston Pride. The first game will be on Saturday December 28th at 330p and Sunday December 29th at 130p.
