News:

  • The Department of Player Safety has announced that defenseman Jeremy Lauzon of the Boston Bruins has been suspended two games for an illegal check to the head of forward Derek Stepan of the Arizona Coyotes on Sat., Feb 8th. Under the terms of the CBA Lauzon will forfeit $8037.64 based on his average annual salary.

In Detroit the Red Wings would play host to their Original Six rival Boston Bruins in an early afternoon matinee. After a scoreless first period Brendan Perlini would open up the scoring for the Wings. Then in the third period Torey Krug would score 33 seconds into the period to tie the game at one, but Andreas Anthanasiou would score a pair of goals to give the Red Wings the 3-1 victory.

 

Anaheim Ducks v. Buffalo Sabres – 3p EST Start Time

In Buffalo the Anaaheim Ducks would come to town to host the Sabres. In the first period the ducks would open the scoring with goals from Jakob Silfverberg, Ryan Getzlaf, and Nick Ritchie to take the 3-0 lead, but Johan Larsson would score for the Sabres to get on the board. In the second period Rasmus Dahlin would score on the powerplay for the Sabres, but it would not be enough as they would fall to the Ducks 3-2.

 

Los Angeles Kings v. New York Rangers – 6p EST Start Time

At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers host the Los Angeles Kings, and in the first period Greg McKegg would net his third of the season to open the scoring for the Rangers. After a scoreless second period Trevor Moore would score his first as a King, but goals from Kaapo Kakko, Artemi Panarin, and Tony DeAngelo would secure the Rangers the 4-1 victory.

 

Chicago Blackhawks v. Winnipeg Jets – 7p EST Start Time

In Winnipeg the Jets would play host to the Chicago Blackhawks. In the first period Dominik Kubalik and Brandon Saad would both tally to give the Blackhawks the 2-0 lead. In the second period Kyle Connor would score while shorthanded to get the Jets on the board. Then in the third period Blake Wheeler, Andrew Copp, Patrik Laine, and Connor (second of the game) would all score to secure the Jets the 5-2 comeback victory.

In Minnesota the Wild would host the Colorado Avalanche, and after a scoreless first period Pierre-Edouard Bellemare would score shorthanded to get the Avalanche on the board, and would be followed by goals from Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog for the Avanlanche and goals from Jared Spurgeon and Erik Fiala for the Wild as Colorado takes the one goal lead into the third period. In the third period the Avalanche would hold the Wild scoreless to take the 3-2 victory.

In Toronto the Maple Leafs would face off with the Anaheim Ducks in a tightly contested matchup. In the first period Andreas Johnsson would score for the Leafs, and Nicolas Deslauriers would tie the game for the Ducks. In the second period John Tavares (PPG) and Auston Matthews would score to give the Leafs the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Jason Spezza would score for the Leafs, but goals from Max Jones (SHG), Adam Henrique (PPG), and Derek Grant would tie the game at four for the Ducks. In overtime it would be Tavares with seven seconds left in the extra frame for his second of the game to secure the 5-4 victory for the Maple Leafs.

At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers would play host to the Buffalo Sabres, and in the first two periods the Sabres would get goals from Zemgus Girgensons and Sam Reinhart to take the 2-0 lead. then in the third period Jimmy Vesey would score to take the three goal lead, but the Rangers would try to comeback as Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider would score a pair of late goals, but it would not be enough as the Sabres would hold on to win 3-2.

 

Detroit Red Wings v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p EST Start Time

In Columbus the Blue Jackets would blank the Detroit Red Wings as they would get goals from Zach Werenski and Boone Jenner as Elvis Merzlikins would record his fifth shutout in eight appearances as the Blue Jackets won 2-0.

In Dallas the Stars would host the Minnesota Wild. In the first period Joe Pavelski would score on the powerplay for the Stars, then in the second period Denis Gurianov would strike on the powerplay for Dallas to take the two goal lead, but Joel Eriksson Ek and Ryan Donato would both score while shorthanded to tie the game at two. Then late in the third period while shorthanded Eriksson Ek would score his second of the game to give the Wild the 3-2 victory.

  • The Washington Capitals re-assigned defenseman Martin Fehervary and Goaltender Vitek Vanecek to Hershey of the AHL.

 

  • After the Toronto Maple Leafs loss to the New York Rangers, they would announce that they have made a trade with the Los Angeles Kings.
    • The Leafs acquired goaltender Jack Campbell and forward Kyle Clifford from the Kings for forward Trevor Moore, Columbus;s 3rd Round pick in 2020, and a conditional 3rd Round pink in 2021.
    • The Kings will be retaining 50% of Clifford’s salary.

On Long Island the New York Islanders would play host to the Vancouver Canucks, and in the first period would trade goals as JT Miller would score for the Canucks, and Michael Dal Colle would score for the Islanders. Then in the second period Jordan Eberle would score for the Islanders, but goals from Quinn Hughes and Tim Schaller would give the Canucks the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Brock Nelson would tally late in regulation to tie the game at three and send the game to overtime for the Islanders. However, in overtime Quinn Hughes would net his second of the game to give the Canucks the 4-3 victory.

In the third period Brendan Gallagher would net his 17th of the season to secure the 4-0 victory for the Canadiens.

In Nashville the Predators would play host to the Vegas Golden Knights, and after a scoreless first period Chandler Stephenson would net his tenth of the season to put Vegas on the board first. Then in the third period Nicolas Roy and Reilly Smith would both score to give the Golden Knights the 3-0 victory.

In Minnesota the Wild would be tamed by the Boston Bruins. In the first period Torey Krug would net his sixth of the season to get Boston on the board first. Then in the second period Krug would net his second of the game while on the powerplay, and the Bruins would also get powerplay goals from Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak to take a commanding 4-0 lead. In the third period Mats Zuccarello would score for the Wild, but goals from Anders Bjork and Jake DeBrusk would give the Bruins the 6-1 win.

In Calgary the Battle of Alberta would heat up as the Flames hosted the Edmonton Oilers. In the first period Buddy Robinson would score his first career NHL goal for the Flames, but goals from Kailer Yamamoto, Zack Kassian, and Connor McDavid (PPG) would give the Oilers the 3-1 lead. In the second period Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm would score for the Flames, but another three goal period from the Oilers would feature McDavid’s second of the game, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Caleb Jones scoring to take a commanding 6-3 lead after a powder keg of a period that featured a goalie fight and many other scraps take place. Then in the third period Sam Gagner and Gaetan Haas would score to give the Oilers the 8-3 victory in a very exciting game.

Then in the third period Jake DeBrusk and David Krejci would both score to give the Bruins the 3-2 victory.

Pavel Buchnevich and Chris Kreider would both score on the powerplay for the Rangers but it wouldn’t be enough as the Islanders would go on to win 4-2.
