  • In the NWHL a pair of signings were announced.
    • The Buffalo Beauts announced that they have signed forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis and goaltender Lea-Kristine Demers for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

New York Rangers v. Montreal Canadiens – 7p EST Start Time

In Montreal the New York Rangers would down the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 after getting goals from Phillip Di Giuseppe, Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox, and a pair from Ryan Strome to secure the victory. Max Domi and Tomas Tatar would tally for the Canadiens.

 

Chicago Blackhawks v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p EST Start Time

In Tampa Bay the Lightning would play host to the Chicago Blackhawks, and it would be a hat trick from Dominik Kubalik, plus goals from Brandon Saad and Slater Koekkoek to give the Blackhawks the 5-2 victory. Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov would score for the Lightning in their loss.

 

Toronto Maple Leafs v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

In Florida the Panthers would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the first period would be a wild one as both teams would score three goals each. Zach Hyman, Kasperi Kapanen, and Auston Matthews would score for the Leafs, and Mark Pysyk, Mike Hoffman, and Noel Acciari would score for the Panthers. Then in the third period William Nylander and Justin Holl would score to give the Maple Leafs the 5-3 victory.

In Boston the Bruins would host the Dallas Stars, and in the first period both teams would score a goal as John Klingberg would get the Stars on the board first, and Charlie Coyle would score for the Bruins. In the second period Brad Marchand and Nick Ritchie would score for the two goal lead for Boston, and then in the third period Denis Gurianov and Miro Heiskanen would score for the Stars, but a tally from David Pastrnak would give the Bruins the 4-3 victory.

In Ottawa the Senators would host the Vancouver Canucks as Bobby Ryan returned to the Senators lineup. JT Miller and Tyler Toffoli would score for the Canucks, but a hat trick by Ryan, plus goals from Connor Brown and Rudolfs Balcers would give the Senators the 5-2 victory.

In Detroit the Minnesota Wild would dismantle the Red Wings 7-1. Matt Dumba would score a pair of goals, plus the Wild would also get goals from Ryan Hartman, Ryan Donato, Jordan Greenway, Kevin Fiala, and Eric Staal to secure the victory. Anthony Mantha would score the lone goal for the Wings.

In St. Louis the Blues would rock their beautiful 90’s Heritage jerseys against the New York Islanders. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Jordan Eberle would score for the Islanders, and Brayden Schenn and Vince Dunn would score for the Blues to force overtime. Then in the extra frame Colton Parayko would score to give the Blues the 3-2 victory.

In Nashville the Predators would cool off the Calgary Flames with the 4-3 overtime victory. The Flames would get goals from Rasmus Andersson, Mikael Backlund, and Andrew Mangiapane, but goals from Colton Sissons, Roman Josi and Mikael Granlund would score to force the overtime. Then in the extra frame Granlund would net the game winner in overtime for the Predators.

 

Washington Capitals v. Winnipeg Jets – 8p EST Start Time

In Winnipeg the Washington Capitals are shutout by the Jets 3-0 in a fantastic goaltending duel.

 

New Jersey Devils v. San Jose Sharks – 1030p EST Start Time

In San Jose the New Jersey Devils would take an early 2-0 lead with goals from Travis Zajac and Nikita Gusev, but the Sharks would strike back as Mario Ferraro and Marcus Sorensen would score in the second period to tie the game. Then in overtime Logan Couture would secure the comeback victory for the Sharks with his 15th goal of the season as the Sharks downed the Devils 3-2.

In Anaheim the Edmonton Oilers would come to town to face off with the Ducks. Both Tyler Ennis and Andreas Athanasiou would score in their Oiler debuts, plus a tally from Leon Draisaitl would keep the Oilers in the ggame, but the Ducks got goals from Sonny Milano, Nicolas Deslauriers, and Adam Henrique to tie the game at three, and a second tally from Milano to win 4-3 in overtime for the Ducks.

NHL Three Stars of the Week for Feb. 17th – 23rd

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of February 17th through 23rd.

 

First Star – Pavel Francouz (G, Colorado Avalanche)

  • Francouz would go 3-0-1 with a 1.46 goals against average, a .941 save percentage and one shutout in four games played for the Avalanche. Francouz would open the week with a 23 save overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Feb. 17th, then on Feb. 19 he would make 27 saves in a victory over the New York Islanders. On Feb. 21st Francouz would record his first career NHL shutout against Anaheim, and would close out the week with a 20 save victory over Los Angeles on Feb. 22nd.

Second Star – Mika Zibanejad (C, New York Rangers)

  • Zibanejad would tie for the League lead in points with eight (3g, 5a) in three games played for the Rangers. Zibanejad would open the week with a four point (1g, 3a) performance against Chicago on Feb. 19th, and on Feb. 21stwould record a three point game (1g, 2a) against Carolina. Zibanejad would close out the week a goal against San Jose on Feb. 22nd.

Third Star – Andrew Mangiapane (LW, Calgary Flames)

  • Mangiapane would lead all skaters with five goals in three games for the Flames. He would start the week with a career high four point (3g, 1a) game against Anaheim on Feb. 17th. On Feb. 21st he would be held off the scoresheet by Boston, but to close out the week Mangiapane would net two goals against Detroit on Feb. 23rd.

  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 700th career NHL goal to become the eighth player, and second youngest, to reach the milestone in NHL history.

 

  • All is quiet on the trade front outside of a minor deal between Toronto and Nashville.

Washington Capitals v. New Jersey Devils – 1p EST Start Time

In New Jersey the Devils would play host to the Washington Capitals, and in the first period Jespar Bratt would tally on the breakaway as he would undress Ilya Samsonov to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Wayne Simmonds would strike on the powerplay to take the 2-0 lead, but Tom Wilson would score a powerplay goal in return to bring the Capitals back within one. Then in the third period Alex Ovechkin would net his 700th career NHL goal, and 42nd of the season, to tie the game at two, but Damon Severson would rip a bullet past Samsonov to give the Devils the 3-2 victory.

In Philadelphia the Flyers would host the Winnipeg Jets, and in the first period Scott Laughton would net a pair of goals to give the Flyers the 2-0 lead. Then in the final forty minutes both teams would score a goal per period as Josh Morrissey and Patrik Laine would score for the Jets, but goals from Sean Couturier and Tyler Pitlick would give the Flyers the 4-2 victory as they continue to climb in the Metro Division standings.

In Pittsburgh the Penguins would hos the Buffalo Sabres, and in the first period Zemgus Girgensons, Sam Reinhart, and Jack Eichel would score to give the Sabres the 3-0 lead. Then in the final forty minutes Evgeni Malkin would score a pair for the Penguins, but goals from Jeff Skinner and Eichel would give the Sabres the 5-2 victory.

 

Carolina Hurricanes v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p EST Start Time

In Toronto for Hockey Night in Canada, the Maple Leafs would play host to the Carolina Hurricanes. In the first period Alexander Kerfoot would net his ninth of the season to give the Leafs the 1-0 lead. However, in the second period the Hurricanes would respond with goals from Linus Wallmark, Nino Niederreiter, and Warren Foegele to take the 3-1 lead. However, the Hurricanes would face uncertainty in net as James Reimer would leave the game with a lower body injury in the first period, and then Petr Mrazek would have a collision with Kyle Clifford and would leave the game with an upper body injury forcing the Hurricanes to use emergency backup goalie Dave Ayres. Teuvo Teravainen would score to grow their lead to three, but John Tavares and Pierre Engvall would score on the first two shots faced by Ayres. Then in the third period Foegele and Martin Necas would score to give the Hurricanes the 6-3 victory.

Then in the second period Ondrej Palat and Brayden Point would score for the Lightning, but Carl Soderberg and Brad Richardson would tie the game at three. Then in the second period Ryan Graves would score to tie the game at one to send the game to overtime, and after the scoreless extra frame it would be Joonas Donskoi in the shootout to give the Avalanche the 2-1 victory.

News:

  • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have fined defenseman Matt Niskanen of the Philadelphia Flyers $5000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for slashing Columbus Blue Jackets forward Gustav Nyquist.

 

  • The Department of Player Safety also fined forward Scott Sabourin of the Ottawa Senators $1881.72, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for unsportsmanlike conduct on Thursday night against the Winnipeg Jets.

 

  • As we inch closer to Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline, Boston and Anaheim would make a trade involving forwards Ondrej Kase and David Backes.

 

  • In NWHL news the Buffalo Beauts would sign Kristin Lewicki for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

 

  • Also the Metropolitan Riveters announced that they have signed goaltender Zoe Zisis for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

  • The New Jersey Devils traded defenseman Andy Greene to the New York Islanders for defenseman David Quenneville and a 2021 2nd Rd Pick.

 

  • The Devils would not be done as they would trade forward Blake Coleman to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward prospect Nolan Foote and Vancouver’s conditional 2020 1st rd Pick.

 

  • The NHL announced that the game for the Anaheim Ducks and St. Louis Blues has been rescheduled for March 11th at 10p ET/7p PT.
    • Per the NHL’s release, the game will be played with the full 60 minutes and will start with the score tied at one.
    • The Blues game against the Panthers for March 10th has been moved to March 9th at 8p ET/7p CT.

  • NHL Department of Player Safety announced that forward Zach Kassian of the Edmonton Oilers has been suspended for seven games for kicking defenseman Erik Cernak of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
    • Kassian is considered a repeat offender, and per the CBA, will forfeit $166,463.43 based on his average annual salary.

  • In NHL Injury news it was announced by Ken Holland of the Edmonton Oilers that Connor McDavid will miss 2-3 weeks due to a quad injury, and per Bob McKenzie of TSN Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber will be missing the Canadiens upcoming road trip, and outside of that information is on lockdown at the moment.

 

  • The Department of Player Safety has announced that they have fined forward Antoine Roussel of the Vancouver Canucks $5000, the maximum under the CBA, for slashing Nashville Predator defenseman Yannick Weber on Monday night.
