Reverse Retro: Metropolitan Division

Continuing with the NHL’s Reverse Retro jersey reveals, today we are going to take a look at the Metropolitan Division

Carolina Hurricanes:

The Carolina Hurricanes are going back to the Hartford Whalers days with this 1979 look. The jersey mirrors what was worn during the 1979-1980 season, however the base colour of this jersey is gray and it ties together the Hurricanes and Whalers colours. The vintage Pucky the Whale is also featured on the shoulders of the jerseys as well.

Columbus Blue Jackets:

Columbus is making their inaugural season (2000-2001) jersey the inspiration here, with the only difference being that the base colour of the jersey is red.

New Jersey Devils:

The look is going back to their first season in New Jersey (1982-1983 season) featured the red and green colours. For the first time in franchise history, they will be wearing a primarily green jersey.

NY Islanders:

This one, I feel is the weakest and it can be said in only one real way. The only difference is the base colour of the jersey. Everything else about it is the exact same.

The team, however, says their going back to the start of their Cup-winning era from 1980-1983 and the navy blue base colour of the jersey is a nod to Islander legends Mike Bossy, Bobby Nystrom, Clark Gillies, and Bryan Trottier.

NY Rangers:

LADY LIBERTY has returned!!

The original look from 1996 has been updated. The jersey is updated with an all blue sleeve but keeps the silver accents and drop shadow numbers.

Philadelphia Flyers:

The Flyers are going back to a 1995 pseudo look. 1995 is the year in which Eric Lindros would go on to win the Hart Trophy as MVP as well as when the Flyers would win the division title.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Penguins are going with a 1997 look mixed with the Pittsburgh diagonal lettering. 1997 would also be the year in which Mario Lemieux would win his sixth scoring title. The Reverse Retro also flips the base colour of the jersey from black to white.

Washington Capitals:

The Capitals are going back to the look from their first Stanley Cup finals appearance from the 1997-1998 season. The only changes from this are the colours. Out are the blue, black and bronze. The only addition to the colours of the current look is a slight hint of silver.

Tomorrow Michael will rank the Reverse Retro jerseys.

Reverse Retro Jerseys Have Been Unveiled

Earlier today, Adidas and the NHL released the “Reverse Retro” jerseys that will be worn by all 31 teams this season.

The NHL and adidas Hockey teamed together for the first-ever League wide alternate jersey program called “Reverse Retro”. The idea behind the program is for each team to “throwback” to an era that has historical significance. According to the NHL, the design process for this began two years ago, which is when the third jerseys were brought back after being shelved during the first year of the adidas and Fanatics apparel deal.

Teams will wear these jerseys for multiple games this season against rival opponents.

This week, TXHT will break down the jerseys per division.

  • Tuesday – Pacific Division
  • Wednesday – Atlantic Division
  • Thursday – Central Division
  • Friday – Metropolitan Division
  • Saturday – Reverse Retro Jersey Rankings

The Reverse Retro jerseys will be available for purchase through the NHL Shop site, adidas.com, and adidas.ca on December 1st and at available retailers on December 6th, right in time for the holiday season.

Capitals Select Trineyev, Hughes, Bjorklund, and Magnusson on Day 2 of 2020 Draft

Day 2 of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft featured picks 32 through 217. As expected, Alexis Lafreniere was drafted first overall by the New York Rangers last night, and Quinton Byfield went 2nd, making history as the highest drafted African American prospect in NHL history. The Washington Capitals drafted four additional players in addition to their singular 1st round pick last night. Washington did not have any second or third round picks, and therefore selected their second draftee in the 4th round.

Right-winger Bogdan Trineyev of MHK Dynamo Moscow was selected in the 4th Round, 117th overall. The Voronezh native measures in at 6’2” and 198 lbs, and in seven games in the MHL with Dynamo, scored four goals and tallied three assists. Trineyev was ranked as 28th among EU skaters by NHL Central Scouting, and appears to play a game similar to that of Caps’ right winger Tom Wilson. Although Bogdan’s offensive production hasn’t been anything to write home about, he did play on the top line of Russia’s Under 18 team.

In the 5th Round, the Capitals selected center Bear Hughes of the Spokane Chiefs (WHL) 148th overall. The 19-year old tallied 16 goals and 31 assists in 61 games during the 2019-20 season with Spokane. Hughes began his playing career with the Coeur d’Alene Hockey Acd Prep team, but did not produce offensively in eight games.

EP Rinkside on Twitter: "Bear Hughes didn't start playing competitive hockey until he was 17. In the past two years, he's jumped from the Spokane Braves of the Kootenay Int'l Junior Hockey

Goaltender Garin Bjorklund was selected in the 6th Round, 179th overall, making him the second WHL’er the Caps had picked during this Draft. Interestingly, eight of the Capitals’ last 15 draft picks have come from the Western Hockey League. In 28 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Bjorklund put up modest numbers, registering a 2.91 GAA and a .897 save percentage. Garin stands at 6’2” and has been noted as extremely agile in the crease and capable of putting up strong performances even when the team in front of him has played incomplete games.

Garin Bjorklund - 2020 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

We thought this would be it for the Capitals, but in a late trade from the Penguins, Washington acquired Pittsburgh’s 7th round pick (211th overall) in exchange for their 7th Round pick in the 2021 Draft. With the late pick, the Capitals selected left winger Oskar Magnusson. The Swedish center-winger has played almost exclusively within the Malmö Redhawks organization (U16, J18, J20) of the SHL, and competed on the Swedish Under 16, Under 17, and Under 18 teams in international competition.

Oskar Magnusson Scouting Report: 2020 NHL Draft #111

NHL Free Agency begins this Friday, October 9th. It is expected that the Capitals will sign former Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. A Samsonov-Lundqvist goalie tandem for the 2020-21 Regular Season is predicted to be one of the more dangerous pairings across the league.

It’s A Beautiful Day To Beat The Pens

Today is Game 4 of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Game 1 went in favor of the Montreal Canadiens by a final score of 3-2 in overtime. Pittsburgh took Game 2 by a score of 3-1. Montreal then rebounded in Game 3 and won it by a score of 4-3.

Game 4 Lineups

There was no scoring in the first and second periods, as it was a close game with both teams trading great chances back and forth. Both goaltenders were standing tall in this one.

In the third period though, it was late in the period when Brandon Tanev turned the puck over in his own zone, which lead to an eventual goal by Artturi Lehkonen. With the assist on the play coming from the hard working Paul Byron.

The Canadiens would double their lead when their captain Shea Weber would ice the cake with an empty net goal, clinching the series.

The Canadiens will have to wait till the end of the round robin games to find out who their opponent will be for the first round.

Qualifying Round Preview – Montreal Canadiens v. Pittsburgh Penguins

With the Qualifying Round taking place to determine who will advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and who gets a shot at the first overall pick in the NHL Draft, we take a look at the upcoming best of five game series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins

The Penguins look to take down the Canadiens in grand fashion as they will be locked, stocked, and ready to rock with captain Sidney Crosby ready to lead the charge. With the team returning at full strength thanks to the extended time off due to the pandemic, it will take the Canadiens a miracle to stop the Penguins fire power from overwhelming them. Also the return of forward Jake Guentzel, who wasn’t supposed to be back until the start of the 2020-21 season, will add a much needed punch to the offense along with trade pickups Jason Zucker, Conor Sheary, and Patrick Marleau.

The Canadiens

For Montreal the biggest weapon they will pose against the Penguins will be a well rested Carey Price between the pipes and if he gets on his game right away could make the Canadiens being a twelve seed in the playoffs a reality. The Canadiens will also have the luxury of having Jonathan Drouin, Victor Mete, and Tomas Tatar back in the lineup too, as they were out of the lineup due to injuries at the time of the pause.

The Difference Maker

Goaltending is going to be the key in this one. Despite Pittsburgh overwhelming advantage in both offense and defense, their goaltending is still suspect. Who do they go with? Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Matt Murray (20-11-5, 2.87 GAA, .899 S%) or Tristan Jarry (20-12-1, 2.43 GAA, .921 S%)? We know what Carey Price is capable of, but what about in Pittsburgh, because that’s where the chink in their armor is.

Stanley Cup Preview – Pittsburgh Penguins

With second training camp underway, the Pittsburgh Penguins look to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Record: 40-23-6 86 points

5th in the Eastern Conference

The Penguins come into the Qualifying Round taking on the 12th place Montreal Canadiens, and looking to advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs to aim for their third Stanley Cup in five years.

On offense the Penguins would be led by Evgeni Malkin with 25 goals and 49 assists for 74 points, but it would be Bryan Rust who would lead the Penguins in goals with 27 (along with 29 assists for 56 points). Both Sidney Crosby (16g, 31a, 47p in 41GP) and Jake Guentzel (20g, 23a, 43p in 39GP) would miss significant time due to injuries, but would still contribute to the team’s offense when healthy. Trade Deadline additions Patrick Marleau and Jason Zucker will be looked to add scoring depth for the playoff run.

On defense Kris Letang led all defenders with 15 goals and 29 assists for 44 points. Justin Schultz, Jack Johnson, Brian Dumoulin, and Trade Deadline addition Evan Rodrigues will be looked to shutting down the Canadiens offense.

Between the pipes head coach Mike Sullivan will have a tough decision to make as Matt Murray has to fight for his number one spot again after going 20-11-5 with a 2.87 GAA and a .899 save percentage, while Tristan Jarry will look to be the number one going into the Qualifying Round after posting a 20-12-1 record with a 2.43 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

Game Recap: New Jersey Devils vs Pittsburgh Penguins 3/10/20

New Jersey Devils (28-29-12 68pts) vs Pittsburgh Penguins (40-26-6 86pts)

Game Recap:

After defeating two of the leagues best teams recently, the New Jersey Devils are hoping to take down another one in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh would get on the board first as trade deadline acquisition Evan Rodrigues added his sixth goal of the season. Nikita Gusev did tie the game on the power play scoring his thirteenth goal of the year. After the first period, the score would be tied 1-1.

Period two saw the Penguins regain the lead as Justin Schultz rifled a shot that beat goalie MacKenzie Blackwood glove side high. Schultz’s goal would be his third of the season and only one of the period as the Penguins lead the Devils 2-1.

Evgeni Malkin would take over the third period as he scored twice to put him at twenty five goals on the season. Kris Letang would add an empty net goal as well. New Jersey did score one more goal as Miles Wood added his eleventh of the season but obviously it wouldn’t help much as the Devils fall to the Penguins 5-2. New Jersey is back in action on Thursday night as they welcome in the Carolina hurricanes to the Garden State.

For the third straight game, the Washington Capitals will face-off against another Metropolitan rival. The Pittsburgh Penguins have faltered lately, as they dropped six consecutive games to end the month of February. The Penguins, however, are still 3rd in the Metro, and had the chance to pull within one point of the Flyers in their last game. The last time these two teams played, back on February 23rd, the Capitals defeated Pittsburgh by a score of 5-3.

The Washington Capitals last played on Thursday as they took on the New York Rangers for the second half of a back-to-back. Washington eventually fell to New York 6-5 in overtime to mark a second straight loss. The Caps and Rangers split their first two meetings with one win for each team. The Capitals received the first power play of the evening early in the first, as Pavel Buchnevich went off for holding less than two minutes in. Washingtons’ now-17th ranked power play was 0-for-5 versus the Flyers, and that theme continued versus New York. Against the team that drafted him, Carl Hagelin gave Washington the lead with his 8th of the season. Moments later, the Rangers were gifted their first power play as Nic Dowd was called for tripping. The Rangers’ power play has been very good with 51 power play goals on the season, and Mika Zibanejad made it 52, with his 34th of the season. John Carlson, who is hunting for his first Norris Trophy, continued to just stand in front of the net on the penalty kill, and that has hurt the Caps. Washington went back on the penalty kill as Nic Dowd was called for his second penalty of the period. Luckily the Capitals killed off that penalty and did not allow a goal on the shift immediately following. Washington has been assessed 252 minor penalties in 66 games, the most in the NHL. The second period saw the Rangers take the lead on the delayed penalty as Kuznetsov was about to go off for tripping. Mika Zibanejad got his 2nd goal of the game, and shortly after, Lars Eller did go off for tripping, so Washington went right back on the penalty kill. Just as the Caps killed off the penalty, they would go on the man-advantage with Brendan Lemieux going off for tripping. TJ Oshie would get a number of great shots, but the score remained 2-1. With just under eight minutes remaining in the middle frame, Ilya Kovalchuk scored his first goal as a Capital to tie the game 2-2. Tony DeAngelo wiped out the tie to make it 3-2 with his 14th of the season just about three minutes later. Sixteen seconds after DeAngelo’s goal, Michal Kempny tallied his 4th of the season to make it 3-3. Kempny had not scored since his two-goal showing versus the Canucks back on October 25th during a wild comeback win. For the Caps to emerge winners tonight, the defense was going to need to do something they haven’t done much of; defend. It took just 12 seconds into the third period for Mika Zibanejad to score his 3rd of the game to mark his 4th career hat-trick and re-instate the Rangers lead. Play would continue as 4-on-4 as Jonas Siegenthaler and Brett Howden were called for matching two-minute minors. Alex Ovechkin made it 4-4 with his 46th of the season with just over 10 minutes left in the game. A heavy hit by Lars Eller ended up giving the Rangers a late power play as he went off for roughing. Just as the Caps killed off the Eller penalty, John Carlson was called for cross-checking. Lars Eller then went off again for high-sticking for two of the remaining three minutes. It was unlikely that Washington would be able to kill off six minutes of back-to-back-to-back penalties, and they didn’t. Mika Zibanejad tallied his 4th of the night to seal the win for the Rangers. Todd Reirden elected to pull Samsonov for the extra skater and with 42.9 seconds remaining, Alex Ovechkin scored his 2nd of the game to tie the game, 5-5. The Caps were guaranteed at least one point in the standings to keep themselves first in the division, as the game went to overtime. Washington eventually fall in overtime, as Zibanejad potted his 5th of the game, and Ilya Samsonov dropped his 5th straight start, after allowing six goals on 39 shots. Braden Holtby will start against the Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins also played on Thursday, where they defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 4-2. Short of the 8-minute mark of the first, Patric Hornqvist put the Pens on the board with his 16th of the season. Nine minutes and one second in, Jake McCabe tied the game with his 3rd of the season, a short-handed goal, as Pittsburgh was on the power play. The Penguins took back their lead as Marcus Pettersson tallied his 2nd at the 12:26 mark. With less than two minutes remaining in the first, the Pens went on the penalty kill, and were successful. At the 12:31 mark of the second, Johan Larsson was called for goaltender interference, and 61 seconds later, Patric Hornqvist made it 3-1 for Pittsburgh. Heading into the third and final frame, the Penguins led by two. Early in the third, however, Marcus Johansson brought the Sabres within one with his 9th of the season. Sidney Crosby made it 4-2 at the 6:02 mark with his 15th of the season. The Sabres vacated their net in favor of the extra skater, but the Penguins would end up the winner of this one. Pittsburgh is 23-6-4 at home, and their 19th ranked power play overall is tied for 9th most power play goals at home with 25. Matt Murray allowed just two goals on 30 shots to tally his 19th win of the season. Murray is confirmed to get the start for Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are without Dominik Simon (OUT, upper body), Jake Guentzel (DL, upper body), Zach Aston-Reese (OUT, lower body), and Anthony Angello (OUT, upper body).

Coverage of the game begins at 12:00pm with Caps Faceoff Live, followed by Caps Pregame Live at 12:30pm, all on NBCSN/NBCSWA, with puck drop shortly after 1:00pm.

Game Recap – 2/23/2020 – Pittsburgh Penguins v. Washington Capitals

Pittsburgh Penguins (37-17-6 0pts) v. Washington Capitals (37-18-6 0pts)

Game Recap:

In Washington the Capitals would play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins as they would look to get themselves back on track as the month of February has not been a good one for the Capitals. In the first period it would be a heavy one for the Capitals as they would lay the body on the Penguins out hitting them 22 to 11, and Jakub Vrana would get the puck past Matt Murray thanks to a falling Marcus Pettersson to give the Capitals the 1-0 lead.

In the second period it would be mostly a quiet period as both teams would fail to capitalize on their powerplay opportunities, but late in the period the Penguins would get goals from Patric Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby with a span of 26 seconds to take the 2-1 lead over the Capitals.

Then in the third period the Capitals would respond with goals from Tom Wilson and Carl Hagelin to take the 3-2 lead, but Evgni Malkin would respond with his 21st of the season to tie the game at three. However, the Capitals would not quit as TJ Oshie would score the game winner, and Hagelin would net his second of the game with the empty netter to secure the 5-3 victory for the Capitals as they retake the lead in the Metropolitan Division.

For the second game of this back-to-back, the Washington Capitals will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins for just the second time this season. It’s hard to believe we get so deep into the season before we face the Pens, but we now get to watch the top two teams in the Metro battle it out. Pittsburgh defeated the Capitals 4-3 back on February 2nd, and unfortunately, the home team will be donning their alternates once again.

The Washington Capitals took on the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, where they lost a fourth straight game, 3-2, after giving up a late power play goal. Ilya Samsonov, on his 23rd birthday, got the start, and had an opportunity to extend his road win-streak to 11. He would fail to do so, though. The Capitals received back-to-back power plays in the first period, but were unable to convert on either. At the 12:55 mark, Jesper Bratt, on yet another breakaway courtesy of an offensive zone turnover, got the Devils on the board first. For the 7th time in eight games, the Capitals have allowed the first goal. Halfway through the second period, Brenden Dillon was called for hooking to give the Devils their first power play of the afternoon. Ilya Samsonov made a great point-blank save that kept the game just 1-0 in favor of the home team. Moments later however, thanks to another botched play by Nick Jensen, the puck squeezed through and Wayne Simmonds nudged it right off the goal line into the back of the net. A rocket from the point off John Carlson’s stick on Washington’s third power play of the afternoon ended up in the back of the net, spoiling MacKenzie Blackwood’s shutout hopes. Tom Wilson was credited with the goal, which marks his second in two consecutive games, and 19th of the season. With the primary assist on Wilsons’ goal, John Carlson officially tied Calle Johansson for most points by a defenseman in franchise history (475). The road to 700 career goals for Alex Ovechkin has been a long one, but at the 4:50 mark of the third period, the milestone was reached. Ovechkin’s 42nd of the season served as the game-tying goal, on the anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, and the Russian winger is just the 8th player in NHL history to score 700 goals. The ‘Great 8’ is the second fastest, and second youngest, to reach the 700-goal mark, behind Wayne Gretzky, with 1,144 games played. He is also the fastest to go from 600 to 700 goals in NHL history (154 games).

Play would resume as 4-on-4 after matching penalties were doled out to Evgeny Kuznetsov and Colton White. The Devils were called for an additional penalty, so for just over 40 seconds, Washington would play 4-on-3, and then have a standard man-advantage for 61 seconds. New Jersey was then called for another offensive zone penalty, with Tom Wilson being hit up high again, so the Caps then received a two-man advantage for fourteen seconds. New Jersey then, as expected, would receive a late power play as Kuznetsov was called hooking. Michal Kempny would then be called, so the Devils would play with a two-man advantage just as Washington had. The Devils made it 3-2 with two minutes remaining, and one more Cap in the penalty box, and Nicklas Backstrom without a stick. Washington would fail to tie it up and force the game to overtime with the goalie pulled. Ilya Samsonov would drop his first road game of the season, after allowing three goals on 28 shots. Braden Holtby will get the start for the Capitals against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins fell to the Buffalo Sabres, 5-2, also on Saturday. Just 14 seconds into the first period, Zach Girgensons scored for the Sabres, with his 11th of the season. Heading into today’s game, Pittsburgh held a 22-5-4 record at home, but were recently shutout 4-0 by the team (Toronto Maple Leafs) they had defeated by a score of 5-2 just two days earlier. Short of the seven-minute mark, Seth Reinhart added to Buffalo’s lead, making it 2-0 in favor of the road team. With Evgeni Malkin in the box for slashing, Jack Eichel scored his 34th goal of the season, improving the Sabres lead 3-0.  Matt Murray will get the start versus the Capitals. Just about halfway through regulation, Evgeni Malkin finally got the Penguins on the board with his 19th goal of the season. Jeff Skinner made it 4-1 with just over 14 minutes remaining the game. Jack Eichel scored his 2nd of the game seven minutes later on the Sabres power play (Brandon Tanev, cross-checking). Malkin then tallied his 2nd of the game with just about two minutes remaining. Despite dropping their last two games, Pittsburgh was able to hold on to the top spot in the Metro division. The Penguins’ 8th ranked power play were unable to convert on either of their two man-advantages, and their 8th ranked penalty kill gave up two Buffalo power play goals (of three opportunities). Bryan Rust leads the Penguins with seven power play goals, although deadline acquisition Jason Zucker has six of his 17 goals coming on the power play. Tristan Jarry finished the match with five goals allowed on 26 shots, dropping just his first game in five starts. Matt Murray will get the start versus the Capitals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are still plagued with injury, though Sidney Crosby has returned. The Pens are still without Brian Dumoulin (DL, ankle), Nick Bjugstad (DL, abdomen), Jake Guentzel (DL, upper body), Zach Aston-Reese (OUT, lower body), and John Marino (DL, face). Dominik Kahun is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Coverage of the game begins at 11:00pm with Caps Faceoff Live, followed by Caps Pregame Live at 11:30pm, all on NBCSN/NBCSWA, with puck drop shortly after 12:00pm.
