Game Recap
In the first period, after some hard hits were exchanged and puck battles, David Perron scores at 5:07 for his eighth goal of the postseason to give St. Louis the 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Perron and Cale Makar of the Avalanche are given matching minor penalties for Cross-checking at 12:29. The first period had a lot of puck possession battles but the Blues enter the intermission with the 1-0 lead over the Avalanche.
In the second period, Erik Johnson nets his first of the 2022 postseason to tie the game for Colorado at 2:44. Nazem Kadri then scores to silence the St. Louis crowd with his third of the postseason at 4:07 to give the Avalanche the lead for the first time in this contest. Less than 20 seconds later, Devon Toews strikes with his fourth of the season to give Colorado the 3-1 lead and after that goal, St. Louis elects to use their time out to slow things down a bit and get the focus back on the contest. At 5:30, after the whistle, Pavel Buchnevich and David Perron lay hit on Nazem Kadri after the latter laid hits on the formers. Because of the hits from Buchnevich and Perron, Colorado goes on the power play. Seven seconds after the end of the Colorado power play, Nazem Kadri finds the back of the net with his second goal of the contest to give the Avs the 4-1 lead.
Colorado then goes on the penalty kill when Darren Helm is off to the penalty box with a hooking call at 15:39. St. Louis then converts on the extra man advantage when David Perron scores his second of the night to cut the Avs lead in half at 17:02. Colorado then heads back to the penalty kill when Erik Johnson goes off for an Interference penalty at 17:53. It looked as if the Blues came within a goal but the puck goes right off the crossbar following a beautiful shot by Vladimir Tarasenko. With 26 seconds left on the power play, St. Louis does come within a goal after Pavel Buchnevich gets the credit for the power play goal, his first goal of the 2022 postseason, with the puck deflecting off of his skate. The second period comes to a close with the Avalanche heading to the intermission with the 4-3 lead.
In the third period, things calm down far more than they were in that very busy second period. Puck possession is all over the ice with saves happening on both sides of the ice for both goaltenders. At 9:38, Nazem Kadri completes the hat trick, his first career postseason hat trick, to give the Avalanche the 5-3 lead. Colorado then heads off for another penalty kill when Artturi Lehkonen goes off for a Slashing call at 11:27. Mikko Rantanen scores the easy empty netter with 1.1 seconds left to give the Avalanche the 6-3 win and the 3-1 series lead over the Blues.
