Whale Sign Defender, LaGue

News coming from the Pod today, as the Connecticut Whale signed defender Maggie LaGue. LaGue was a 2018 5th round selection, #22 overall of the Connecticut Whale.

LaGue is from Barre, Vermont and played 4 years of college hockey at Robert Morris University. In her college hockey career, she put up consistent numbers. Scoring 22 points her freshmen year, 22 points her sophomore year, 25 points her junior year, and 23 points her senior year (Which she was captain of the team during her senior season). Breaking that down, she has scored 13 goals and added 79 assists for a total of 92 points, which is good for 9th all time in the programs history.

Last season, she did not sign with the Whale after she was drafted, opting to play for the PWHPA as a member of the Independent roster. She will be joining the Whale this season for her first year in the NWHL.

NWHL News – Kremer Signs with Beauts

Today in the NWHL, the Buffalo Beauts add some defense for the 2020-21 season.

 

Kremer Signs with Beauts

  • With his first signing as General Manager of the Buffalo Beauts, Nate Oliver has signed defender Dominique Kremer.

  • Kremer, 22, joins the Beauts after playing the 2019-20 season in the SDHL with Djurgardens IF where she would score five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in her first pro season.
  • Kremer also played for Merrimack College during her collegiate career that saw her play 138 games and miss only two games during her four years there.

Whale Re-Sign Trio Of Players

Big, big news from the Pod today as the Whale have re-signed a trio of players: defender Taylor Marchin, defender/forward Hanna Beattie, and forward Katelynn Russ.

Marchin is a defender from Michigan, who played her college hockey at Yale University. Marchin is returning to the team for her third season. Last season, Marchin recorded 3 assists in 24 regular season games and added another assist in the 2 playoff games that the Whale played.

Hanna Beattie is a utility player, in that she can play both forward and defense. She played her college hockey at Williams College. The New Jersey native is returning to the Whale for her fourth season with the team. Last season, she scored 3 goals and added 3 assists for 6 points on the year in the 22 games she played. In the 2 playoff games, she scored 2 goals. Currently, she is tied for the league lead in goals in the playoffs!

Katelynn Russ was a late signing last season for the Whale. The Illinois native played her college hockey at Union College. During the regular season, she only played 2 games, however in the playoffs, where the Whale played 2 games, she scored twice and added an assist for 3 points. Currently, she is tied for the league lead in points, for the playoffs, with Boston’s Kaleigh Fratkin and Connecticut’s Emma Vlasic. She is also tied for the league lead in goals, for the playoffs, with Connecticut’s Hanna Beattie. She is also tied for the league lead in power play goals, for the playoffs, with Boston’s Jordan Juron.

NWHL News – Whale Sign Trio *UPDATED*

Today in the NWHL the Connecticut Whale made a splash by re-signing three players for the upcoming season.

 

Whale Sign Trio

  • The Connecticut Whale have re-signed forward Katelynn Russ, defender Taylor Marchin, and utility player Hana Beattie.

  • Beattie, who plays as both a forward and defender, will be entering her fourth season with the Whale.
    • Beattie registered three goals and three assists in 22 regular season games last season, and registered two assists in the Isobel Cup Playoffs.
  • Marchin will be entering her third season with the Whale after having three assists in the regular season, and one in the playoffs.
    • Marchin, not known for her offensive prowess in Connecticut, is a steady, physical defender that helps clear out in front of the net.
  • Russ, who played in the final two games of the 2019-20 season with the Whale, was the breakout star of the Whale’s victory over the Buffalo Beauts in the Isobel Cup Playoffs that saw her score two goals and an assist.
    • The 2020-21 NWHL season will be Russ’ first full season in the league and with the Whale.

 

Curtis Re-signs in Minnesota

  • The Minnesota Whitecaps have announced that they have re-signed All Star forward Jonna Curtis for the 2020-21 season.

  • Curtis, who played 21 regular season games in 2019-20, registered 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points to rank second in assists and third in points in the NWHL.
  • Curtis will be entering her third season in the NWHL and with the Whitecaps.

 

Nate Oliver Named GM

  • Today the NWHL has announced all six general managers for the 2020-21 season.

  • Bray Ketchum (Connecticut), Kate Whitman Annis (Metropolitan), Karilyn Pilch (Boston), and Jack Brodt (Minnesota) all return for the 2020-21 NWHL season.
  • Mandy Cronin has signed to become the new general manager of Toronto.
    • Last season Cronin was the GM of the Buffalo Beauts.
  • Taking over the helm in Buffalo as general manager is Nate Oliver.
    • Oliver, who has contributed to TXHT in the past, is adedicated worker to the game of women’s hockey in Buffalo, and last season was the community manager for the organization.

NWHL News – A Week’s Worth of Signings

This week in the National Women’s Hockey League another 2020 draft pick has signed for the upcoming season, as well as the leading scorer in NWHL history.

 

3rd Overall Signs

  • On Monday, May 4th the Buffalo Beauts signed the 3rd overall pick of the 2020 NWHL Draft goaltender Carly Jackson for the 2020-21 season.

  • Jackson spent her college career at the University of Maine where she established new records in wins (45), goals against average (2.15), save percentage (.923%), and shutouts (12).
  • Jackson was announced by Hockey Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine during the NWHL Draft.

 

The All Time Leading Scorer Returns

  • On Tuesday, May 5th the Boston Pride re-signed the all time leading scorer in NWHL history as Jillian Dempsey returns for her sixth season.

  • Dempsey led the League with 23 assists and 40 points as she captained the Pride to a 23-1-0 regular season.
  • An NWHL Original, Dempsey has recorded 46 goals and 52 assists for 98 points in 91 career regular season games.

 

Whale Sign 2nd Round Pick of 2020 Draft

  • On Wednesday the Connecticut Whale signed their 2nd Round Pick in the 2020 NWHL Draft defender Tori Howran.

  • Howran, the seventh overall selection of the 2020 NWHL Draft, was the captain at the University of New Hampshire as she would be a standout defender, and would record two goals and 20 assists for 22 points in 27 games to rank second on the team in scoring.

 

Toronto Continues to Build

  • On Thursday May 7th the new Toronto franchise signed their seventh player as forward Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout has signed for the 2020-21 NWHL season.

  • Coutu-Godbout stated on the Quinnipiac team website that she planned to play in the NWHL, and that’s become a reality with her signing with the new Toronto franchise.
  • During her Quinnipiac playing career Coutu-Godbout would lead the team with 16 goals, and her 26 points made her second on the team in scoring during the 2019-20 season.

 

Rivs Sign 4th Overall Pick

  • Also on Thursday it was annoumced that the Metropolitan Riveters signed their 2020 first round pick defender Saroya Tinker for the 2020-21 season.

  • Tinker is a smooth skating defender, and with Yale this past season would play in all 32 games where she would record a goal and 11 assists.

 

Pride Sign Trio

  • On Friday May 8th the Boston Pride re-signed a trio of defenders in Mallory Souliotis, Lauren Kelly, and Jenna Rheault.

  • Kelly, who is returning for her third season with the Pride, recorded two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 23 games played.
  • Souliotis ranked second amongst Pride defenders with two goals and 16 assists for 18 points in 22 games played. She would also have a plus/minus rating of +29 during the 2019-20 season.
  • Rheault, the 25th overall pick in the 2018 NWHL Draft recorded a goal and five assists with a +14 rating in her rookie season with the Pride this past season.

Whale Sign Draftee

News from The Pod today, as the Whale sign their 2nd round pick of the 2020 NWHL draft, defender Victoria Howran.

 

1 (7) – Connecticut – D Victoria Howran, University of New Hampshire

Victoria Howran is from Bancroft, Ontario. The defender played for 4 years of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. She was the captain of the team in her senior year. She scored 7 goals and added 48 assists for a total of 55 points.

 

The defender is the 3rd blue liner signed for next season, she will join Captain Shannon Doyle, and veteran NWHL defender Elena Orlando on the back end this upcoming season!

NWHL News – Babs is Back!

Today the NWHL has announced the latest signing for the new Toronto franchise.

 

Babs is Back!

  • After announcing it Friday afternoon on the Token CEO podcast, forward Kelly Babstock returns to the NWHL for her fifth season and first with Toronto.

  • Babstock played her first three seasons in the NWHL with the Connecticut Whale, and then played for the Buffalo Beauts during the 2018-19 season.
  • Babstock in her four seasons in the NWHL has compiled 27 goals and 33 assists for 60 points in 65 career games.
  • Babstock is also a two time NWHL All Star (2017 and 2018).

NWHL News – Number One Pick Signs

Today the NWHL has announced that the first overall pick of the 2020 NWHL Draft has signed.

 

Number One Pick Signs

  • The Boston Pride have signed the 2020 First Overall Pick of the NWHL Draft forward Sammy Davis for the 2020-21 season.

  • Last season with Boston University Davis recorded 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 36 games.
  • Davis would be a Hockey East First Team All Star and MVP for the Beanpot tournament last season.
  • Over her BU career Davis would record 142 points in 147 games.

Whale Draft 6 Players

The NWHL draft happened on Tuesday April 28th and Wednesday April 29th. All six teams participated, and the Whale were able to add 6 players to The Pod. Let’s take a look at who was selected.

 

Round 1

2 – Connecticut – F Kayla Friesen, Clarkson University

Kayla Friesen is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She played 4 years of college hockey at two different schools. She spent her first 3 years at St. Cloud State University, and her last year at Clarkson University. She tallied 50 points at St. Cloud State and added another 30 points at Clarkson University.

 

Round 2

1 (7) – Connecticut – D Victoria Howran, University of New Hampshire

Victoria Howran is from Bancroft, Ontario. The defender played for 4 years of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. She was the captain of the team in her senior year. She scored 7 goals and added 48 assists for a total of 55 points.

 

Round 3

1 (13) – Connecticut – F Savannah Rennie, Syracuse University

Savannah Rennie is from East St. Paul, Manitoba. The forward played 4 years of college hockey, all at Syracuse University. In her 4 years there, she has scored 27 goals and added 40 assists for a total of 67 points, which is good for 15th all time in program history.

 

Round 4

1 (19) – Connecticut – F Amanda Conway, Norwich University

Amanda Conway is from Methuen, Massachusetts. The forward played her college hockey at Norwich University for 4 years. In those 4 years, she scored 116 goals and added 72 assists for a total of 188 points. She is the all time leading scorer in the program’s history.

 

Round 5

1 (25) – Connecticut – F Nicole Guagliardo, Adrian College

Nicole Guagliardo is from Hoffman Estates, Illinois. She played her college at 3 different schools for 4 years. Her freshman and sophomore seasons, she played at Mercyhurst University, where she scored 5 goals and added 3 assists for 8 points. She then played at Lindenwood University for her junior year, where she scored 10 goals and added 12 assists for 22 points. She would finish her senior season at Adrian College, where she would score 16 goals and add 17 assists for 33 points.

 

3 (27) – Connecticut* (Acquired from Riveters) – F Maddie Bishop, Sacred Heart University

Maddie Bishop is from Wethersfield, Connecticut. She played 4 years of college hockey at Sacred Heart University. In her senior season, she was named captain of her team. In her 4 years, she scored 32 goals and added 56 assists for a total of 88 points. Which is good for 8th all time in the program’s history.

The Whale picked 5 forwards and 1 defender. It seems that the Whale are addressing their needs up front, while adding another piece to their good defense.

2 (14) – Buffalo – F Autumn MacDougal, University of Alberta

Autumn MacDougal is from Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia. The forward played 5 years at the University of Alberta. In her 5 years there, she has scored 58 goals and added 67 assists for a total of 125 points. She is tied for the most points in the program’s history.

 

3 (15) – Toronto – F Erin Locke, York University

Erin Locke is from Toronto, Ontario. The forward played 5 years of college hockey at York University. In those 5 years there she has tallied 26 times and added 37 assists for a total of 63 points. Which is good for 4th all time in the program’s history.

 

4 (16) – Metropolitan – G Tera Hofmann, Yale University

Tera Hofmann is from Toronto, Ontario. Hofmann played her college hockey at Yale University for 4 years, posting rather consistent numbers. In her senior season, she played 12 games, had a 2.29 GAA and a .891 Save Percentage.

 

5 (17) – Minnesota – F Presley Norby, University of Wisconsin

Presley Norby is from Minnetonka, Minnesota. She played her college hockey at the University of Wisconsin for 4 years. In the 4 years of playing, she scored 38 goals and added 56 assists for a total of 94 points.

 

6 (18) – Boston – F Taylor Wenczkowski, University of New Hampshire

Taylor Wenczkowski is from Rochester, New Hampshire. She played her college hockey at the University of New Hampshire for 5 years. In her senior season, she was captain of the team. In her 5 years, she scored 42 goals and added 40 assists for a total of 82 points.

Bridgette Prentiss is from Buffalo, New York. The defender played 4 years of college hockey at Franklin Pierce University. In her senior season, she was named captain of the team. In her 4 years there, she scored 36 goals and added 61 assists for a total of 97 points. That is good for 5th all time in the program’s history.

 

4 (22) – Toronto – F Natalie Marcuzzi, Robert Morris University

Natalie Marcuzzi is from Thornhill, Ontario. The forward played her college hockey at Robert Morris University for 4 years. In her senior season, she was named an alternate captain. In her 4 years, she scored 20 goals and added 20 assists for 40 points.

 

5 (23) – Minnesota – F Haley Mack, Bemidji State University

Haley Mack is from East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She played her college hockey at Bemidji State University, where she played for 4 years. In her 4 years, she scored 38 goals and added 39 assists for 77 points.

 

6 (24) – Boston – D Taylor Turnquist, Clarkson University

Taylor Turnquist is from Blaine, Minnesota. The defender played her college hockey at Clarkson University, where she played for 4 years. In her senior season, she was named an alternate captain. In her 4 years, she tallied 8 goals and added 32 assists for a total of 40 points.

Meghara McManus is from Milton, Massachusetts. She played her college hockey at the University of New Hampshire for 4 years. In those 4 years, she tallied 48 goals and added 36 assists for a total of 84 points.

 

6 (30) – Boston – D Paige Capistran, Northeastern University

Paige Capistran is from Manchester, New Hampshire. She played her college hockey at Northeastern University for 4 years. In those 4 years, she scored 4 goals and added 26 assists for a total of 30 points.
