2021-22 Preview

The Minnesota Wild are going to be in for an interesting season. As this team preview is being written on September 3rd, Kirill Kaprizov still remains un-signed. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise’s albatross contracts have been bought out, which I will touch on in a bit.

Minnesota is going to be one of those teams that is in the middle of the pack. The Wild, after buying out Parise and Suter, do lose some scoring, but not a lot. The buyouts on those two did not hurt Minnesota this season but going into next offseason, Minnesota will not have a lot of room to work with.

Kaprizov, who led all first-year players with 27 goals, with eight on the power play, 157 shots, and 51 points in 55 games played, must be re-signed.

The team does have excitement coming with the Wild hosting the Winter Classic this season and it’s expected to be a big time event for Minnesota. But as this team is currently constructed, this is going to be a team that is in the middle of the pack in terms of overall standing.

Minnesota is going to be back in the Central Division this season after being in the West for the 2020-21 abbreviated season and the competition there is going to be brutal.

2021-22 Prediction: 5th in Central Division

Wild Force Game 6 with a 4-2 Victory

Minnesota Wild v. Vegas Golden Knights – Game 5
VGK Leads Series 3-2

Game Recap:

After being shutout by the Golden Knights in game 4, the Minnesota Wild looked to have a much better start to their game. That better start didn’t happen right away as Vegas got on the board first as Mark Stone collected an Alex Such pass off the boards, skated in and beat Cam Talbot glove side to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead. Then about a minute later, the Wild started to get on a roll and go on a scoring spree as they scored three times within a span of six minutes. Kirill Kaprizov (1st career playoff goal), Zach Parise, and Jordan Greenway were the goal scorers for the Wild. After the first period, the Minestota Wild would lead the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1.

In the second period, Vegas would get within one goal as Alec Martinez would rocket a Alex Pietrangelo one-timer into the back of the net from the right face-off circle. Minnesota did a great job after that goal of keeping the Golden Knights off the scoresheet for the rest of the period despite being ridiculously outshoot 22-1. After two periods, the Wild would lead the Golden Knights 3-2.

Despite being outshot again 11-6 in the third period, the Minnesota Wild were able to hold on and survive the offensive desperation of the Golden Knights. The Wild added an empty net goal as Nico Sturm would score his first goal of the playoffs. Final score of this game was 4-2 and this forces a game six between the two teams back in Minnesota.

Golden Knights Tame the Wild in 4-0 Shutout

Vegas Golden Knights @ Minnesota Wild

Game Recap:

The Minnesota Wild were hoping to even up the series as they face the Vegas Golden Knights in game 4 of this first round matchup. Unfortunately for the Wild, Nic Roy got the scoring started for the Golden Knights at the 10:37 mark. Roy made a great defensive play in his own zone before going down the other way and wristed a shot the would beat goalie Cam Talbot for the early 1-0 lead. That score would stand going into period two.

Alex Tuch was able to help expand Vegas’ lead in the second period as he was able to split the defense to score his third goal of the playoffs. Moments later, Golden Knights captain Mark Stone would get in on the action as he would score short handed on a breakaway to give Vegas a 3-0 lead. That would be all the scoring in the middle period.

The Golden Knights played a great defensive game all night long and was able to keep the Wild from scoring despite putting up 35 shots in this game. Nic Roy would score again, this time it would be an empty net goal to seal the victory. Marc Andre Fleury was fantastic again for the Golden Knights to earn the shutout. On Monday night, the Golden Knights have a chance to put this series away in game five.

Golden Knights Take Series Lead With 5-2 Win

Vegas Golden Knights @ Minnesota Wild

Game Recap:

With the series lead on the line, the Minnesota Wild host the Vegas Golden Knights at home in Minneapolis for game 3. The Wild got off to a nice start as Ryan Hartman opened up the scoring as he tipped in a pass in front of the net from Kirill Kaprizov to get the early 1-0 lead. Moments later, Joel Eriksson Ek would scoop up a loose puck and wrist it past Marc Andre Fleury to give the Wild a 2-0 lead. That score would stand heading into the second periods

In the second period, the Wild completely unraveled as Vegas scored three unanswered goals to get their first lead of the game. Mark Stone, Patrick Brown, and Riley Smith were the goal scorers the Golden Knights completely dominated and out worked the Wild as they had a 22-5 lead in shot that period. After two periods, the Golden Knights lead the Wild 3-2.

Minnesota was not able to get anything going offensively in the third period either as they gave up two late goals to seal the victory for Vegas. William Karlsson and Mark Stone (empty net, second goal of the game) each were the goal scorers. The Wild were only able to muster a total of four shots in the third period. Vegas won by a final score of 5-2 and lead the series 2-1 heading into game 5 on Saturday.

Golden Knights Even Up Series

Minnesota Wild @ Vegas Golden Knights

Game Recap:

After a 1-0 overtime victory in game 1, the Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights got back together for the second game of this series. The same tight play from the previous game continued in the first period of this one. What was different was Minnesota dictated and dominated with many offensive chances compared to the first period last time. The Wild outshot the Golden Knights 17-10. Cam Talbot and Marc Andre Fleury continued to shine with their spectacular play in between the pipes. After the first period, the game would start off scoreless.

Period two saw things pick up offensively for these two teams. It would be Matt Dumba that opened up the scoring getting his first goal of the playoffs. Dumba fired a wrist shot that got through a screen and behind Golden Knights goalie Marc Andre Fleury to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. However, that lead was very short-lived as Jonathan Marchessault tied the game eighteen seconds later as he fired a shot from the right face off circle that would beat Cam Talbot. Five minutes later, Vegas got their first lead of the series as Alex Tuch scored his first of the playoffs. Alex Pietramgelo shot the puck off Cam Talbot’s glove and then the puck went to Lucas Janmark who centered the pass to Tuch who buried the puck in the back of the net. After two periods, the Golden Knights would lead the Wild 2-1.

In the third and final period, Vegas was able to shutdown the Wild and even later on put the nail in the coffin as Alex Tuch added his second goal of the game on the power play. Marc Andre Fleury was fantastic and made 34 saves to get the victory. The series is now evened up 1-1 and heading to Minnesota as the Wild get their turn to host at home in the playoffs.

Game 1 Goes to the Wild in OT

Minnesota Wild vs Vegas Golden Knights

Game Recap:

After winning the season series 4-3-1, the Minnesota Wild reunite with the Vegas Golden Knights in round one of the Stanley Cup playoffs. While there was no scoring in the first period, it was a dominating one for the Golden Knights as they had a commanding 19-5 shots advantage. They also dominated the Wild in the face off circle as well. The first period ended with Vegas being on the power play with thirty-eight seconds left on it to begin the next period.

Despite being dominated in the first period, the Wild picked up the pace as their top skilled and their depth players stepped up their games. Minnesota created more chances and pushed back more effectively then in the previous period. They outshot the Golden Knights 13-11 in the second period. Despite all that, the game remained scoreless between the two teams heading into the third period.

For the rest of regulation, the game would be a tight checking game and each team traded scoring chances but neither would score. After the third period, this game would go onto overtime. In overtime, Joel Eriksson Ek would get the game winner for the Wild as he fired a shot from the slot that would get behind Golden Knights goalie Marc Andre Fleury who was spectacular throughout today’s game. Cam Talbot was fantastic as well for the Wild making 42 saves to earn the shutout victory. Minnesota leads the series 1-0 heading into game two on Tuesday night in Vegas.

A “Kirill”ing Matchup

Minnesota Wild (35-16-5 75pts) v. Vegas Golden Knights (40-14-2 82pts)

Without further ado, the Stanley Cup playoffs are finally here hockey fans! And boy do we have an exciting matchup coming up between the Minnesota Wild and the Vegas Golden Knights. I’m Scott Fairchild, and I will be previewing and covering this exciting playoff matchup between the Wild and Golden Knights. Let’s take a look back and see how these two teams got invited to the big dance aka the Stanley Cup playoffs:

How did the Minnesota Wild get here?

After having a disappointing season last year and missing the playoffs, the Minnesota Wild rebounded to have a very nice bounce back season. Minnesota finished with a 35-16-5 record and finished third in the Honda West division. A lot of that is due to the emergence of rookie sensation and favorite to win the Calder Trophy in Kirill Kaprizov. The Wild and their fans waited around five years for Kaprizov to arrive in North America after being drafted in the fifth round. There’s always been this hype around his skill set as he dominated the KHL in Russia as well as winning an Olympic gold medal for his country back in 2018 scoring the gold medal winning goal in overtime. Kaprizov certainly did not disappoint and had a fantastic rookie season putting up fifty-one points (27g-24a-51pts) in fifty six regular season games. Minnesota improved in all facets of their game after having head coach Dean Evason for a full season. The Wild especially improved their penalty kill which was ranked 25th in the National Hockey League last season and bumped it up to 11th in the league. Minnesota also had solid goaltending with a tandem of Cam Talbot and rookie Kaapo Kahkonen. Dean Evason deserves a lot of credit for improving the Wild and getting them back into playoffs.

How did the Vegas Golden Knights get here?

Seeing the Golden Knights towards the top of the NHL standings is not a surprise. They almost won the President’s Trophy however, the Colorado Avalanche won it despite being tied with 82 points by having more regulation wins than the Golden Knights. Vegas is towards the top of the league standings as they feature great goaltending from Marc Andre Fleury and Robin Lehnar, a great defense, having solid two way players that can score, and owning the number one ranked penalty kill in the National Hockey League. Overall, the Golden Knights finished the regular season with a 40-14-2 record and 82 points.

How do these two teams matchup?

*Note: Minnesota Wild won the season series against the Golden Knights with a 4-3-1 record

Goaltending (Advantage: Vegas Golden Knights)

Vegas clearly has the advantage as goalies Marc Andre Fleury and Robin Lehner combined to win the Jennings trophy and helping their team have the fewest goals allowed throughout the season. Marc Andre Fleury in particular has been spectacular and is definitely in the conversation of possibly winning the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender. Lehner when called upon was fantastic in between the pipes for the Golden Knights. Minnesota had solid goaltending from veteran Cam Talbot and rookie Kaapo Kahkonen. However as solid as they were, they’re not on the elite level yet of what the Golden Knights can throw out there on the ice in goal.

Forwards (Advantage: Vegas Golden Knights)

Vegas features two players over fifty points, two over forty, and four players with over thirty points. Captain Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty who are first and second on the team in scoring while secondary scoring comes from players like Jonathan Marchesault, William Karlsson, Chandler Stephenson, and Alex Tuch. Minnesota doesn’t have quite the same firepower that the Golden Knights have but they aren’t slouches. The Wild feature young super star Kirill Kaprizov along with Kevin Fiala, veteran Mats Zucarello, Jordan Greenway, and Joel Eriksson Ek. Overall, Vegas have more players that put more goals on the scoreboard.

Defense (Even): To be honest, I think both defenses are very good. Vegas has more two way defenders who can play both sides of the game offensively and defensively. However, Minnesota has more players that focus more on playing a great defensive game. Both D corps are very good and can make this series a close and competitive one

Power Play (Even): both the Wild and Golden Knights power play are ranked outside the top twenty and rank 22nd & 23rd respectively. Both teams tend to rely on scoring more goals during five on five play. It’s not to say that they can’t score on the power-play as both teams have players that can produce with the man advantage. This will be something to watch throughout the series as power plays are important to a team success in winning a Stanley Cup.

Penalty Kill (Advantage): Vegas Golden Knights): clearly Vegas has the advantage as they have the number one ranked penalty kill in the league. However, Minnesota is ranked 11th and they have a pretty good penalty kill themselves. They worked really hard to improve it from last season and improve they definitely did. However, what makes Vegas’ PK better is their goaltending, defensemen, and having former Selke Trophy nominee Mark Stone. Both teams do a great job here but the Golden Knights definitely have the advantage.

3 Keys to the series for both teams

Minnesota Wild

1) Kaprizov and Fiala must produce

2) Goaltending and special teams

3) Secondary scoring

Vegas Golden Knights

1) Goaltending remains elite

2) Power play produces

3) Shutdown Kaprizov & Fiala

My prediction: Vegas in 6 games

Vegas has all the ingredients necessary to make another run back to the Stanley Cup finals like they did back in 2018. They are very good all over the ice and have great goaltending. I am expecting them to win this series however, I do have a tiny bit of doubt. Minnesota had their number this season and the last few matchups in particular saw them handle the Golden Knights very well. The Wild can give the Golden Knights some trouble as they did matchup against them very well. At best this series could go seven but I honestly don’t see it and think Vegas moves onto round 2.

Reverse Retro: Central Division

Continuing with the NHL’s Reverse Retro program, today we are going to take a look at the Central Division

Chicago Blackhawks:

The jersey the Blackhawks are going with is based off of the famous barber pole-striped jerseys as well as white alternate jersey design from 1937-1955.

Colorado Avalanche:

The Nordiques look makes its return! Well, sort of. The famous Nordiques logos and white jersey return with the difference being that they are rendered in the current Avalanche colour scheme. The fleur-de-lis which were on the waist and shoulders of the older Nordiques jersey is also featured on these jerseys as well.

Dallas Stars:

The 1999 Cup winning design makes its return for the Stars with an “icy-white” take on the jersey. There are no other featured differences other than the colour differences.

Minnesota Wild:

The Wild are getting the Minnesota North Stars treatment! The Wild logo is going with the North Stars colours, as well as the drop shadow numbers. This jersey is one of my favourites out of the bunch.

Nashville Predators:

The Predators are going with a few looks from their inaugural season in 1998. Most notably those looks are the nicks in the numbers, the striping, and the crest from that season. The only addition is the silver sleeves on the jersey.

St. Louis Blues:

The 1995 jersey, which returned last season as a third jersey, returns again. The only difference here is the colours are flipped between the blue and reds.

Winnipeg Jets:

For the Jets, they are honouring their first season in the NHL from 1979. The design here is also re-mixed and features the current colour scheme with the original design.

Tomorrow TXHT will look at the Metropolitan Division Reverse Retro jerseys.

Reverse Retro Jerseys Have Been Unveiled

Earlier today, Adidas and the NHL released the “Reverse Retro” jerseys that will be worn by all 31 teams this season.

The NHL and adidas Hockey teamed together for the first-ever League wide alternate jersey program called “Reverse Retro”. The idea behind the program is for each team to “throwback” to an era that has historical significance. According to the NHL, the design process for this began two years ago, which is when the third jerseys were brought back after being shelved during the first year of the adidas and Fanatics apparel deal.

Teams will wear these jerseys for multiple games this season against rival opponents.

This week, TXHT will break down the jerseys per division.

  • Tuesday – Pacific Division
  • Wednesday – Atlantic Division
  • Thursday – Central Division
  • Friday – Metropolitan Division
  • Saturday – Reverse Retro Jersey Rankings

The Reverse Retro jerseys will be available for purchase through the NHL Shop site, adidas.com, and adidas.ca on December 1st and at available retailers on December 6th, right in time for the holiday season.

Early in the third period, the Canucks would double their lead, the goal coming from Antoine Roussel. Assists on the play came from Quinn Hughes, his second point of the game, and Chris Tanev.

The final score of the game would be 3-0 in favor of the Vancouver Canucks, who now lead in the series 2 games to 1.
