Skid Continues, As Whale Fall To Riveters

The Whale and the Riveters faced off against each other for the second time this season. For the Riveters, it would be their second game of the weekend, as they played yesterday against the Boston Pride, losing that game 8-3.

The first period was not a good period for the Connecticut Whale, they got off to a slow start. They didn’t have the puck much in the period in the offensive zone. They were outshot in the period by a tally of 12-2. Unfortunately, a couple of players went down in the game with injuries, first was defender Jordan Brickner, and forward Kayla Meneghin. Although, Meneghin would return in the game. Despite not playing well in the first, there was no scoring in the period.

In the second period, the Riveters would score first. It would only take them 3 minutes to get on the board, the goal coming from Madison Packer, in front of the net. The assist on the play came from ex-Whale defender Colleen Murphy. 8 minutes later, the Riveters would double their lead, with the goal coming from Riveters rookie Kendall Cornine. Assists on the play came from Madison Packer and Kate Leary. Before the end of the period, the Whale were on the power play. They would get on the score sheet and cut the Riveter lead in half. The goal coming from Emma Vlasic, her fourth goal of the season. The goal puts her in a tie for the team lead with Kayla Meneghin. The assist on the play came from Hanna Beattie. The score after 2 periods was 2-1 in favor of the Riveters.

The Whale got off to a fast start in the third. While the Whale were on the penalty kill, Kaycie Anderson would get a breakaway. She went five hole, beating ex-Whale goalie Sam Walther to tie the game at 2. After some great chances traded back and forth between both teams, the Riveters would establish their lead again. The goal coming from Kendall Cornine, it would be her second goal of the game, and her ninth goal of the season. The assist on the play came from Kiira Dosdall. The game would end with the final score being 3-2 in favor of the Riveters.

Both goalies played well, as Sam Walther faced 23 shots and made 21 saves. Brooke Wolejko made her first start of the season, she faced 31 shots and made 28 saves.

The Whale will be off next weekend, their next game will be against the Whitecaps on December 21st in Danbury, CT at 5p.

Whale Take On Rivals For The First Time This Season

The Connecticut Whale played their second game of the weekend, squaring off against the Metropolitan Riveters for the first time this season.

It would be Sonija Shelly, who would again get the net for the Whale; for the Riveters, they would turn to former Whale goalie and Maryland native Sam Walther.

It would be very good start for the Riveters. It would lead to an early goal, coming from Madison Packer, assists on the play came from Kate Leary and Cailey Hutchison. That would be all the scoring that would take place in the first period. However, good news for the Whale was that they played a clean period, as no penalties were called against them, and they outshot the Riveters 11-5 in the period.

It was a clean second period on the score sheet, as both goalies were on top of their game in the period. There were penalties a plenty in the period, as 6 penalties were called. 4 against the Riveters and 2 against the Whale. The Whale would once again out shoot the Riveters 10-8.

There was a little more action in the third period on the score sheet. It would start early on, as the Riveters would double their lead. The goal coming while the Riveters were shorthanded. The goal coming from Brooke Baker, and the assists on the play came from Kendall Cornine and Rebecca Morse. Late in the period, the Whale would get on the board, the goal coming via the power play. The goal was scored by rookie Emma Vlasic. Assists on the play came from Kayla Meneghin and Jordan Brickner. Unfortunately, that would be the closest the Whale would get on their comeback campaign. The Whale for the third time this game out shot the Riveters 13-12, giving the final tally of 34-25. There were 7 penalties called in the third. 3 against the Riveters and 4 against the Whale. One of the penalties, very late in the game, was a 2 minute body checking penalty and a 10 minute misconduct against Kayla Meneghin.

The Whale will square off against the Riveters once again on December 8th, and it will be in Danbury, CT. The puck drop will be at 130p.

The Connecticut Whale and the Buffalo Beauts squared off for the final time this regular season. Buffalo has previously beaten the Whale in the prior four matchups this season.

In the first period, Buffalo got off to a hot start. Their first goal would come within five minutes of the first period. The goal coming from Jane Morrisette, and the assists coming from rookie Elena Gualtieri and Kayla Meneghin, her second point of the game. Whale Blanked In Boston

The NWHL got back in to the full swing of things this weekend, and for the first time this season, the Boston Pride would square off against the Connecticut Whale. The Pride coming off of impressive performances lately, looked to continue their run of form, while the Whale were still searching for their first win of the season.

The Pride came out and blitzed the Whale early and often, however Sonija Shelly had all the answers to the Pride shots. It would take a little over half the period before the Pride would get on the board. The goal coming from Mary Parker, and the assist on the play came from Mallory Souliotis. It would not take long for Boston to double their lead as two minutes later, Lexi Bender would notch a goal. Assist on the play came from McKenna Brand. That would be how the period would end with the Pride up 2-0, and leading in the shots on goal department 23-8.

In the second period, the Boston Pride supplied even more pressure to the Whale. Sonija Shelly was standing on her head for almost the entire period. The only goal that was scored was late in the period, another goal coming from Mary Parker, her second of the game. Assist on the play came from Alyssa Wohlfeiler and former Whale captain Emily Fluke. The period would end with the Pride up 3-0. Boston outshot the Whale in that period 20-5.

In the third period, the Pride would explode on the score sheet. It would take almost five minutes for the party to start. While the Whale were on the power play, Jillian Dempsey would notch a short handed goal, unassisted. Three minutes later, the Pride would add to their, already impressive lead, the goal coming from McKenna Brand, also unassisted. It would be Brand’s second point of the game. Then nine seconds later, in the blink of an eye, the Pride would add another goal. The goalie coming from Lexie Laing, assists from Lexi Bender, and Carlee Toews. The Pride would add the extra point, the goal coming again from Lexie Laing. It would be her second goal of the game, assists from Carlee Toews, her second point of the game, and Tori Sullivan. The Pride would put the finishing touches on the game with six seconds left, it would be a hat trick goal coming from Mary Parker. Assists on the play came from Alyssa Wohlfeiler and Lauren Kelly.

Sonija Shelly hung in tough, she faced 51 shots, and made 45 saves. Brooke Wolejko also came into the game, she played about 12 minutes. She faced 7 shots and made 5 saves.

Not much for the Whale to do other than to completely forget about this game and look forward to the next game, which is against the Buffalo Beauts for the fifth and last time this regular season. That game will be on Saturday November 30th at 430p in Danbury, CT.

Neumann Saves 41 As Beauts Top Whale

Last week, the NWHL had a bye week, so that gave teams extra time to prepare for games this weekend. The Whale, looking to get their first win of the season, squared off against the Beauts, who came off a loss yesterday to the Boston Pride. It would be Whale go-to goalie Sonija Shelly in net for Connecticut and Kelsey Neumann in net for Buffalo.

In the first period, it would be a quick start for the Whale, trying to capitalize on early momentum. However, Neumann would stop every shot attempt in the period. The same went for Shelly, who didn’t have as much work to do in the period. Only one penalty was called in the period, and it would be against the Whale’s veteran defender Jordan Brickner. The Beauts would fail to capitalize on the power play. The period ended scoreless, however the Whale would lead in the shot on goal department 13-4.

Action would pick up in the second period, as the Beauts would strike first, 30 seconds into the period. The goal coming from Taylor Accursi, with the assists coming from Lenka Curmova and Iveta Klimasova. The teams would trade chances back and forth, with the goalies coming up large for both teams. The period would end with the Whale down 1-0 and again out-shooting the Beauts 12-10 in the period.

In the third period, the Beauts would double their lead 13 minutes into the period, with a goal from Erin Gehen. Assists on the play would come from Brooke Stacey and Cassidy MacPherson. The Beauts weren’t allowed to be comfortable though, as less than 2 minutes later, the Whale would get one, to cut the lead in half. The goal coming from Kayla Meneghin, it would be her team leading 3rd goal of the season. She has scored at least a goal in the last 3 games that she’s played. Assists on the play came from Sarah Schwenzfeier, her 2nd point of the season, and Jordan Brickner, her 6th point of the season, and tied for the team lead. That would be the closest the Whale could get, as with a minute left in the period, the Beauts would net an empty net goal. The goal coming from Kim Brown, assists on the play came from Brooke Stacey, her second point of the game, and Marie – Jo Pelletier.

Final stats for the goalies were Neumann for the Beauts faced 42 shots and came up with 41 saves. Sonija Shelly turned in a good performance too, she faced 25 shots and came up with 23 saves.

The next game for the Whale will be against the league leading Boston Pride. The start time for the game will be 630p in Boston at Warrior Ice Arena. Should be a good game, as it will be the first game of the year where the Whale will face their former captain Emily Fluke.

Whale Get Blitzed At Home

The Connecticut Whale and the Minnesota Whitecaps squared off, with both teams looking to put behind their losing streaks early on in the season.

There would be great back and forth action in the first with both goalies coming up with huge saves. There was only one penalty called in the period, and it went against the Whale. The Whitecaps were able to take advantage on the power play, seconds before the period ended. Meghan Lorence managed to get one by Sonjia Shelly. Assists on the play went to Audra Richards and former Whale defender Amanda Boulier.

There was an explosion of scoring in the second. It started  minutes into the period, when the Whale would tie the game up. A great effort from Whale rookie Emma Vlasic which beat Amanda Leveille. Assist on the play came from Grace Kleinbach. 5 minutes later, Minnesota would get the lead back, an unassisted goal coming from Nicole Schammel. Then Schammel would get on the score sheet again 2 minutes later, via the power play. It would be her second goal of the game with the assists coming from Jonna Curtis and Sydney Baldwin. The Whale would answer back 2 minutes later and cut the lead in half. The goal coming from Kaycie Anderson, who managed to get behind the defense. Assists on the play came from Shannon Doyle and Erin Hall. Then, just like the end of the first period, the Whitecaps would get a late goal at the end of the second. The goal coming from Haylea Schmid. Assists on the play came from Sydney Baldwin, her second point of the game, and Nicole Schammel, her third point of the game.

The Whitecaps went on the offensive at the start of the third, getting a goal 30 seconds into the period. The goal coming from Sydney Baldwin, her third point of the game. Assists on the play came from Meghan Lorence, her second point of the game, and Haylea Schmid, her second point of the game. In quick succession, 2 minutes later, the Whitecaps would add another goal. This time the goal came from Brooke White-Lancette. Assists on the play came from Kelsey Cline and Sydney Baldwin, her fourth point of the game. This unfortunately spelled the end of Sonija Shelly’s day and she was replaced by Brooke Wolejko. It would be her first action of the season. About 10 minutes later, the Whitecaps would add a seventh goal, coming from their top player Jonna Curtis. It would be her second point of the game and the assists on the play came from Allie Thunstrom and Lisa Martinson.

Not much to say about this game other than they need to forget about it and come back strong tomorrow. The Whale will face off against these same Whitecaps at 130p.

For those keeping track, Whale defender Shannon Doyle was able to record 3 blocked shots today, giving her 12 blocked shots for the season! Doyle is donating a $1 for every block she records for her fundraiser Blocks For Books. Here is the link for those who want to make a donation too.
