The NWHL got back in to the full swing of things this weekend, and for the first time this season, the Boston Pride would square off against the Connecticut Whale. The Pride coming off of impressive performances lately, looked to continue their run of form, while the Whale were still searching for their first win of the season.
The Pride came out and blitzed the Whale early and often, however Sonija Shelly had all the answers to the Pride shots. It would take a little over half the period before the Pride would get on the board. The goal coming from Mary Parker, and the assist on the play came from Mallory Souliotis. It would not take long for Boston to double their lead as two minutes later, Lexi Bender would notch a goal. Assist on the play came from McKenna Brand. That would be how the period would end with the Pride up 2-0, and leading in the shots on goal department 23-8.
In the second period, the Boston Pride supplied even more pressure to the Whale. Sonija Shelly was standing on her head for almost the entire period. The only goal that was scored was late in the period, another goal coming from Mary Parker, her second of the game. Assist on the play came from Alyssa Wohlfeiler and former Whale captain Emily Fluke. The period would end with the Pride up 3-0. Boston outshot the Whale in that period 20-5.
In the third period, the Pride would explode on the score sheet. It would take almost five minutes for the party to start. While the Whale were on the power play, Jillian Dempsey would notch a short handed goal, unassisted. Three minutes later, the Pride would add to their, already impressive lead, the goal coming from McKenna Brand, also unassisted. It would be Brand’s second point of the game. Then nine seconds later, in the blink of an eye, the Pride would add another goal. The goalie coming from Lexie Laing, assists from Lexi Bender, and Carlee Toews. The Pride would add the extra point, the goal coming again from Lexie Laing. It would be her second goal of the game, assists from Carlee Toews, her second point of the game, and Tori Sullivan. The Pride would put the finishing touches on the game with six seconds left, it would be a hat trick goal coming from Mary Parker. Assists on the play came from Alyssa Wohlfeiler and Lauren Kelly.
Sonija Shelly hung in tough, she faced 51 shots, and made 45 saves. Brooke Wolejko also came into the game, she played about 12 minutes. She faced 7 shots and made 5 saves.
Not much for the Whale to do other than to completely forget about this game and look forward to the next game, which is against the Buffalo Beauts for the fifth and last time this regular season. That game will be on Saturday November 30th at 430p in Danbury, CT.
