With the announcement of the NWHL draft For Tuesday April 28th and Wednesday April 29th, it might be a good time to review some history of the draft. However, it might be high time to shine the light on the other notable players that were drafted in those years.

2015

The goalie played 4 years of college hockey, putting up rather impressive numbers at the University of Minnesota. In her first season with the Beauts, she became an Isobel Cup champion. Her next season with the Beauts, she would lead them back to the Cup finals but unfortunately was defeated by the Riveters that season. Her next year, she would leave the Beauts to play for the Minnesota Whitecaps, and would once again lead the team to the Isobel Cup final, where the Whitecaps would win the game in overtime against the Buffalo Beauts. This past season, she would re-sign with the Whitecaps, and once again lead the team to the Isobel Cup finals. If and when play resumes, she could potentially be the first 3 time Isobel Cup champion.

Orlando Comes Back For Season Six

News from the Pod today as original NWHL defender Elena Orlando has re-signed with the Whale, returning for her sixth season, and her fifth with the Whale.

This past season with the Whale, she saw a career high in points, with 3 assists in the 24 games that she played. She was also third on the team in terms of blocked shots with 26 recorded. Also, my favorite stat, cause I play center, she has taken 3 faceoffs this season, she won 2 of them and lost only 1.

She was named an NWHL All Star this season, getting to participate in the festivities in Boston. She played for Team Packer, along with her teammate Grace Klienbach. She took part in the hardest shot competition.

With this signing, it gives the Pod their veteran defensive presence on the back end. Also, it gives the team one of it’s best shot blockers, and puck moving defenders back for another season!

Big news for the Connecticut Whale today as they re-signed their top point producer Kaycie Anderson. She will be returning to The Pod for her fourth season!

in 2018-2019, Anderson only played 6 games and unfortunately didn’t register a point. This season was definitely a comeback season, as she played 24 games for the Whale. In which, she scored 3 goals and added 8 assists for 11 points on the year. The 11 points was tied for the team lead with the captain, Shannon Doyle.

Though not named an All Star this past season, I can’t help but feel that she is trending in the right direction, it can not be stated enough what a key contributor she was all season long.

With this signing, the Whale have brought back their leading goal scorer (Vlasic), their top point getter (Anderson), their top defender (Doyle), and their top goalie (Wolejko)!

TXHT will continue to provide NWHL coverage as more signings and news are announced.

The Captain’s Back!

Big news for the Connecticut Whale today, as their Captain has re-signed with the team and will return for her sixth season with the team!

Last season, Doyle had a strong campaign, in which she scored 3 goals and added 5 assists for 8 points in the 13 games she played. It was good for third on the team in points, but best for all defenders on the Whale last season. This season, she followed up with an even better points total, with 2 goals and 9 assists for 11 points. It’s tied for the team lead this season!

Doyle was selected to participate in the NWHL All Star game in Boston, where she dressed for Team Dempsey with fellow Whale teammates Emma Vlasic and Jordan Brickner.

Also this season, Shannon Doyle would take part in some charitable work called Blocks For Books. In which she, and various other NWHL players would donate for every blocked shot they registered. Shannon Doyle, her total at the end of the year, blocked 67 shots during the regular season and added 5 more in the playoffs!

Shannon Doyle numbers have gotten better and better as the years have gone on. The Whale get to keep their veteran presence on their back end. Excited to see what she’ll do next season!
