Game Recap
In the first period, Edmonton jumps out to the quick 1-0 lead just 38 seconds in after Connor McDavid nets his ninth of the playoffs. Then at 1:06, Evander Kane is issued a major penalty for Boarding to the back of Colorado’s Nazem Kadri, who then goes into the boards. On the power play, Colorado gets eight shots off, but the Avalanche are unable to even the game. Later on, Colorado heads back to the power play when Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse heads off for a Delay of Game penalty for sending the puck over the glass at 9:36. At 16:12, Colorado ties it up after the puck deflects off of Darnell Nurse and into Edmonton’s net. The goal is credited to Valeri Nichushkin, his fourth of the postseason. Colorado then heads to the penalty kill after Nathan MacKinnon is whistled for a tripping call on Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl.
In the second period, Valeri Nichushkin scores his second of the game at 4:37 to give the Avalanche the 2-1 lead. Then about ten minutes later, Colorado heads to their third power play when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins heads to the penalty box on a Holding the Stick penalty at 14:23. At the end of 40 minutes, the Avs head to the second intermission with the 2-1 lead over the Oilers.
In the third period, at the 4:05 mark, Colorado heads to their fourth power play on the night when Leon Draisaitl goes off for a Hi-sticking call. Then at 7:34, Ryan McLeod scores his third goal of the postseason to make this a 2-2 game. Edmonton then heads to the power play when Colorado’s J.T. Compher heads off after a Tripping call at 10:32 and with Compher heading out of the box, his fifth goal of the postseason gives Colorado one goal lead once more at 12:42. Colorado shuts the door on this contest when Mikko Rantanen scores on the empty net, his fourth of the postseason, to give the Avalanche the 4-2 win and take the 3-0 series lead.
