In the first period, after some puck battles, Boston hets the first power play of the night when Nino Niederreiter heads to the penalty box for a Tripping penalty at 3:17. Boston heads to their second power play of the night when Tony DeAngelo is called for Interference at 7:28. After the interference call, Carolina heads to the power play when Boston’s David Pastrnak is called for goalie interference at 7:47 and then the penalty is under further review for the interference being intentional. Antti Raanta heads off the ice for Carolina and then Pyotr Kochetkov goes in net for the Hurricanes. After further review, the verdict is that only the minor penalty will be assessed for Pastrnak. At 13:03, Carolina gets on the board when Jesper Fast nets his first of the year when the puck sneaks through Boston goaltender Linus Ullmark’s legs. The Hurricanes then make it a 2-0 lead at 15:30 when Tony DeAngelo has a slapshot then deflectes off of Sebastian Aho’s stick for his first goal of the postseason. Boston then heads to the box for the second time on the night when Patrice Bergeron is called for Slashing at 18:54. Matching minors are issued to both Carolina’s Nino Niederreiter and Boston’s Charlie Coyle with six seconds left in the period on Roughing minors. After the whistle sounds, extracurricular pleasantries are exchanged between both teams, with Carolina heading to the intermission with the 2-0 lead. Carolina will have at least 54 seconds left on the power play when the second period begins.
In the second period, Carolina will have the two-man advantage for 54 seconds. Also the Hurricanes announced that Antti Raanta will not return tonight due to the upper body injury suffered earlier in the first period. With the Bergeron penalty now expired, Sebastian Aho scores his second on the power play with a one-timer to give the Hurricanes the 3-0 lead at 1:10. After a long period of puck possession between both squads, Carolina heads to the penalty kill wehn Andrei Svechnikov heads to the box on a Holding call at 14:36 and then the Bruins get on the board when Patrice Bergeron scores on the power play with his first goal of this postseason, just 21 seconds into the power play. After a hit from the Hurricanes Andrei Svechnikov’s shoulder behind the Bruins net to Hampus Lindholm’s chest, more pushing and shoving occurs between both squads at 17:11. Hampus Lindholm is helped off the ice with penalties to come for both squads. Boston’s Brandon Carlo gets a double minor for the Roughing, with Trent Frederic serving the other half of the penalty and Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov also heading to the box for a Roughing call. With the double minor to Boston, Carolina heads to the power play for the fifth time on the evening. While on the power play, more action after the play comes when Boston’s Brad Marchand and Carolina’s Pyotr Kochetkov both get whistles on Slashing penalties at 17:52 with Carolina’s part of the penalty being served by Sebastian Aho. Carolina heads to another two-man advantage when Boston’s Derek Forbort is called for a holding call at 18:07. Carolina responds on the 5-on-3 when Nino Niederreiter scores his second goal of the postseason at 18:52.
In the third period, Carolina finished off the remainder of the power play. Carolina heads to their seventh power play of the night when Jake DeBrusk heads off on a Cross-checking penalty at 1:52 and then Derek Forbort is whistled for a high-sticking double minor penalty at 3:04. More puck possession battles occur and then at 8:27, Boston heads to their third power play of the night and then at 12:21, Patrice Bergeron scores his second of the postseason. With 4:32 left in the game, Boston has pulled Linus Ullmark to bring the extra attacker out for the Bruins and then Boston heads to the power play when Carolina’s Brett Pesce heads off for the high-sticking penalty at 15:49. With 41 seconds left in the contest, Carolina’s Nino Niederreiter scores his second goal of the night as the Hurricanes breeze by the Bruins with the 5-2 win and take the 2-0 series advantage. When the final whistle takes place, Boston’s Derek Forbort gets the final penalty with a Roughing call.
