Tampa Bay Lightning @ Toronto Maple Leafs
(TOR leads the series 1-0)
Looking to exercise past playoff performance demons this postseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the defending back to back Stanley Cup champions in the Tampa Bay Lightning in game one of this beat of seven series. The first period to start was a feeling out process for both teams with only a few chances. It took until the 18:19 mark but, the Toronto Maple Leafs opened up the scoring as Jake Muzzin fired a shot that would beat Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy under his glove for the first goal of the playoffs. Toronto would have a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Muzzin’s goal would jump start the Maple Leafs offense as they would put up three more goals in period two. It would start with an Auston Matthews slapper, then a David Kampf shorthanded goal moments later, and Mitch Marner’s first playoff goal in the last eighteen games to give Toronto a 4-0 lead heading into the third period.
Auston Matthews added onto the lead as he scored his second of the game and playoffs, he tucked in the puck into the back of the net as the puck bounced of the goalie’s stick and Matthews was there to cash in on the offensive opportunity. Toronto would go on to win by a final score of 5-0 with Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell making 23 saves to earn the shutout victory. The Leafs & Lightning are back at it for Game 2 on Wednesday night.
