PHF Weekend Recap – Finding Playoff Positioning

Welcome to the TXHT PHF Weekend Recap for the Weekend of Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th, 2022, plus news coming out of the weekend.

Saturday, March 5th, 2022

Game #1 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

  • In New Jersey the Metropolitan Riveters would host the Boston Pride for their weekend series, and after a scoreless first period Taylor Wenczkowski would strike for the Pride to take the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Christina Putigna would get the empty netter as Katie Burt would record her second straight shutout as the Pride would defeat the Riveters 2-0.

Game #2 – Connecticut Whale v. Minnesota Whitecaps

  • In Minnesota the Whitecaps look to slow down the red hot Connecticut Whale, but in the first period Taylor Girard and Kaycie Anderson would score to give the Whale the 2-0 lead. In the second period Allie Munroe would strike while shorthanded to grow the Whale’s lead to three, but Haley Mack would score for the Whitecaps to cut their deficit back to two. Then in the third period Lexie Laing would score for the Whitecaps, but Kennedy Marchment’s goal would give the Whale the 4-2 victory over the Whitecaps.

Sunday, March 6th, 2022

Game #1 – Connecticut Whale v. Minnesota Whitecaps

  • In Minnesota the Whitecaps would look to bounce back against the Connecticut Whale, and in the first period Taylor Girard would score to give the Whale the 1-0 lead. In the second period Kennedy Marchment would strike to give the Whale the two goal lead. Then in the third period Ashleigh Brykaliuk would score for the Whitecaps, but goals from Melissa Samoskevich and Janine Weber would give the Whale the 4-1 victory over the Whitecaps.

Game #2 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

  • Back at the Prudential Center Practice Facility the Metropolitan Riveters would host the Boston Pride for the second game of their weekend series, and in the first period Taylor Wenczkowski would score for the Pride to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Mallory Rushton and Rebecca Russo would score to give the Rivs the 2-1 lead, but Meghara McManus would score to tie the game at two for the Pride. Then after a scoreless third period Madison Packer would strike in overtime to give the Riveters the 3-2 victory over the Pride.

News and Notes

  • The PHF announced this past week that Minnesota Whitecaps forward Allie Thunstrom was named Player of the Month for February.
    • Thunstrom would eight goals and an assist for 9 points in six games played for the Whitecaps.
  • The Toronto Six have been sold to a new ownership group.
    • The ownership group consists of Former NHLer Anthony Stewart, Hockey Hall of Famer Angela James, Bernice Carnegie, and former NHL head coach Ted Nolan.
    • The ownership group represents the first BIPOC and Canadian investors in the league’s history.

Standings

3 Stars of the Week

First Star – Kennedy Marchment (CTW)

  • Marchment would continue her amazing 2021-22 season as she would record two goals and three assists for five points in the Connecticut Whale’s weekend series against Minnesota. Marchment would also set the Whale’s single season scoring record.

Second Star – Taylor Girard (CTW)

  • Girard would record four points for the Whale as she had two goals and two assists in two game splayed against Minnesota. Girard would net the first goal for the Whale on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as record an assist on both game winning goals.

Third Star – Taylor Wenczkowski (BOS)

  • Wenczkowski would continue to have a strong season fort he Boston Pride as she would record back to back two point games as she would have two goals and two assists.
