To end the month of January, the New Jersey Devils close it out with the first of an away and at home back to back games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tonight’s game takes place north of the border in Toronto. The first period didn’t lack any offense as both teams put up a combined five goals in period one. New Jersey got goals from Pavel Zacha early, Jesper Boqvist, & Andreas Johnsson. Toronto responded with two goals from Auston Matthews. After the first period, the Devils would lead the Maple Leafs 3-2.
New Jersey added to their lead at the 7:33 mark as the red hot Nathan Bastian wouod score his ninth goal of the season as he snapped one home to make it 4-2 in favor of the Devils heading into the third period.
Unfortunately for New Jersey, they completely fell apart and their lead disappeared beginning with a Jason Soezza goal at the 4:16 mark of period three. That goal propelled the Maple Leafs to score three more times to give them their first lead of the game and the victory. Other third period goals came from Mitch Marner, Ilya Mikheyev, and an empty net goal to complete the hat trick for Auston Matthews. Toronto wouod steal this one and defeated the Devils by a final score of 6-4. These two teams go at it again tomorrow night, this team in New Jersey.
