New Jersey Devils (15-23-5 35pts) @
Carolina Hurricanes (30-9-2 62pts)
Game Recap:
Tonight the New Jersey Devils head south to take on the Hartford Whalers, I mean Carolina Hurricanes who turn back time as they wear their throwback Whalers jerseys. Beginning of the game showcased the speed both teams possess. Carolina got on the board first as Jordan Martinook would perform a spin-o-rama and backhand his shot past Devils goalie Jon Gilles to make it 1-0 at the 8:02 mark. Andrei Svechnikov would add to the Hurricanes lead shortly after by scoring on a net drive for his fifteenth goal of the season. New Jersey finally got on the scoreboard and got the game within one as Jesper Boqvist buried a one time shot for his first goal of the season at the 17:26 mark. Carolina would take a 2-1 lead heading into the next frame.
The second period was a fast paced one with very few stoppages in play. Both teams traded chances but neither team could convert on any of them. Carolina had a chance to add to the lead on a late power play, and the Devils almost tied the game on a short handed breakaway by Nathan Bastian. However, neither capitalized on their opportunities and the Hurricanes would continue to lead 2-1 heading into period three.
It was a low scoring third period as it featured a tight checking and defensive effort by the Hurricanes. The Canes kept the Devils off the scoresheet and were able to hang on to win despite a mighty effort by New Jersey at the end to hang on for a 2-1 victory. Next time we see the Devils back in action is on Monday night as they travel north of the border to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
