New Jersey Devils (10-11-5 25pts) @
New York Islanders (7-11-5 19pts)
Coming off a a loss to the Nashville Predators, the New Jersey Devils look to rebound as they head out to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders. Unfortunately for the Devils, they were dealt a blow before the game as captain Nico Hischier & top pairing defender Ryan Graves were placed in the COVID protocol and unable to play tonight’s game. Rookie goalie Akira Schmid would make his NHL debut tonight and is the 2nd Devils rookie goaltender to do so. Schmid was very solid and made some very impressive saves in period one. Things would remain score for a while until later in the period when Jesper Bratt would give the Devils a 1-0 lead at the 17:01 mark. However, the lead would be short lived as Noah Dobson tied the game up on the power play seconds later. Good news for the Devils was Jack Hughes gave them their lead back as he skated the puck into the offensive zone and fired a shot that would beat Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin for his fourth goal of the season. New Jersey would take a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.
The second period went in favor of the Islanders as they score twice thanks to former New Jersey Devils Andy Greene and Zach Parise. Greenie’s goal came at the 8:32 mark as he bombed a shot from the point that for his first goal of the season. Parise scored short handed on a breakaway for his first goal of the season and and his first as a member of the New York Islanders. They would take a 3-2 lead after two periods.
New York would get another goal at the 9:37 mark thanks to Jean-Gabriel Pageau who scored his fourth goal of the season. Pageau would get a pass from Oliver Wahlstrom, who created an odd man rush and then passed it to Pageau to bury it past goalie Akira Shmid to make the score 4-2 Islanders. The Devils couldn’t get anything going offensively since Jack Hughes’ goal late in the first period. New Jersey returns to the ice on Tuesday night as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers.
