New Jersey Devils (7-3-2 16pts) vs New York Islanders (5-4-2 12pts)
After a fantastic performance the other night against the Florida Panthers, the New Jersey Devils face off off against division rivals in the New York Islanders this evening. New Jersey was able to keep the positive momentum and kept it going in this game. Janne Kuokkanen got the scoring started at the 12:12 mark while the Devils were on the penalty kill as he cleaned up a rebound from a Nico Hischier shot for the short handed goal. The Islanders put on a lot of pressure in the first period but, Devils goalie MacKenzie Blackwood and the defense stood their ground as they maintained a 1-0 lead after the first period.
For most of the second period, it was very low scoring until towards the end of the frame. Tomas Tatar at the 19:10 mark scored his first goal as a member of the New Jersey Devils and first of the season. Tatar got to the front of the net on the power play and tipped in a shot from Dougie Hamilton at the point to expand the Devils lead to 2-0 heading into the third period.
New Jersey kept playing great defense and got spectacular goaltending from MacKenzie Blackwood the rest of the way. It also helped that the Devils were able to expand the lead they built on earlier. Dawson Mercer would get in on a breakaway and would out the puck in the back of the net on his backhand that would beat Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin for his fourth goal of the season. A little over ten minutes later, Dougie Hamilton would blast a shot from the point for his third goal of the season and seal the victory for the Devils as they shutout the Islanders by a final score of 4-0. MacKenzie Blackwood was spectacular in net as he made forty two saves to earn the shutout victory. The Devils are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host the Boston Bruins at home.
