New Jersey Devils (4-2-0 8pts) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (3-3-2 8pts)
After recently finishing up their five game opening home stand to begin the season, the New Jersey Devils head out on the road to the “Steel City” to face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tonight’s game was a game of returns as Devils goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Penguins all-star center Sidney Crosby (season debut) both returned from injury Danton Heinen would get the Penguins on the board first as he found a loose puck in front of the goal crease and sent it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. New Jersey started picking up the pace of their play and were eventually rewarded for it. Andreas Johnsson would tie the game up 1-1 late in the first period as he wristed a shot that would deflect off of Penguins forward Evan Rodrigues that would get behind goalie Tristian Jarry. After the first period, the game would be tied 1-1.
Period two saw each teams trade some chances and play a tight defensive type of period. However, the New Jersey Devils were able to take the lead as Jimmy Vesey picked off the puck at the point and took the puck the other way in on a breakaway and deked out the goaltender as he slid the puck in five hole for the shorthanded goal. Vesey’s goal would be the only one as the Devils would lead 2-1 after the second period.
Early on in the third period, Brock McGinn would tie the game as he would receive a pass in front of the net and snapped a shot from the slot for his second goal of the season. The last three minutes of the game got very interesting as Jesper Bratt was awarded a penalty shot attempt at the seventeen minute mark as he was taken down by Sidney Crosby on a semi breakaway. Jesper Bratt took advantage of that penalty shot opportunity and deked out Penguins goalie Tristian Jarry for the game winning goal and put it in on his backhand. Andreas Johnsson would add an empty net goal a little over a minute later to seal the victory as the New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins by a final score of 4-2. The Devils get right back to work tomorrow evening as they return home to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Halloween.
