Washington Capitals (33-14-5 71pts) v. New York Rangers (26-21-6 58pts)
Game Recap:
Back at Madison Square Garden for the final regular season game against each other, the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers would start with an explosion as we would finally see the fallout from the last 48 hours. Right off the bat we would see a good old fashioned line brawl to start the game, and then 49 seconds later, public enemy number one, Tom Wilson would drop the gloves with Brendan Smith. We would see two more fights before getting to the five minute mark of the game that would see a total of 72 penalty minutes in 4:14 of play. By the time we would get to the end of the first period we would see a total of 100 penalty minutes and five powerplays.
In the second period things would settle down a little bit. TJ Oshie, returning after the passing of his father earlier in the week, would score 12 seconds into the period to get the powerplay goal to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. Then after Pavel Buchnevich would get a five minute major and a game misconduct for cross checking Anthony Mantha in the face, Oshie would strike again on the powerplay to grow the Caps lead to two. Before the end of the period the Caps would grow their lead to three as Nic Dowd would deflect a John Carlson point blast for the goal.
Come the third period the Rangers would finally get on the board as Alexis Lafreniere would score on a broken play to end Vitek Vanecek’s shutout bid. Morgan Barron would strike for his first career goal, but Oshie would net the hat trick after hitting the empty net to give the Capitals the 4-2 victory, and pay an amazing tribute to his father.
