In a highly anticipated matchup the Washington Capitals would fall to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in their first matchup of the 2019-20 season.
Columbus Blue Jackets v. Montreal Canadiens – 2p EST Start Time
In Montreal the Canadiens would play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the first period Vladislav Gavrikov would score for the Jackets to take the lead. Then in the second period Tomas Tatar would score for the Canadiens, but a pair of goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois to take the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Max Domi and Shea Weber would score for Montreal, but Gustav Nyquist’s 12th of the season would give the Blue Jackets the 4-3 victory.
Vancouver Canucks v. Carolina Hurricanes – 2p EST Start Time
In Carolina the Hurricanes would host the Vancounver Canucks, and in the first period Elias Pettersson would net his 22nd of the season to give the Canucks the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Tyler Myers would score for Vancouver, but goals from Nino Niederreiter and Sebastian Aho would tie the game at two for the Hurricanes. In the third period Pettersson would net his second of the game, and Andrei Svechnikov would score to keep the game tied and send the game to overtime. Then after a scoreless five minute overtime, it would be Justin Williams with the shootout winner to give the Hurricanes the 4-3 victory.
