Pittsburgh Penguins (32-14-5 69pts) v. Washington Capitals (35-12-5 75pts)

Game Recap:

Finally after months of waiting the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins get to renew their rivalry for the first time in the 2019-20 season, and it would not disappoint in DC this afternoon. In the first period Lars Eller would open the scoring for the Capitals after serving a penalty for interfenernce. However, 68 seconds later Sam Lafferty would respond for the Penguins to tie the game at one, and less than a minute later Patric Hornqvist would tip a shot in front and Ilya Samsonov would have the puck go off the inside of his stick and into the net to give teh Penguins the 2-1 lead as they headed into the first intermission.

In the second period the Penguins would continue swarming the Capitals zone and would be rewarded with a Dominik Simon backhanded tally to grow their lead to two. Both teams would have powerplay opportunities, but neither team would be able to capitalize on their opportunities.

Then in the third period both teams would get chippy with each other, but it would be Evgeny Kuznetsov forcing his way to the front of the net and backhanding the puck past Matt Murray to bring the Capitals back within one as the Capitals would dominate the majority of the period. However, Brandon Tanev would get a lucky bounce to retake the two goal lead, but Lars Eller would net his second of the game less than 30 seconds later to get the Capitals back within one but it would not be enough as the Penguins would hold on to defeat the Capitals 4-3.
