Predators Smash Devils 4-2

New Jersey Devils (8-6-4 20pts) @

Nashville Predators (11-8-1 23pts)

Game Recap:

Coming off a shootout loss the other night, the New Jersey Devils head to the “Music City” to take on the Nashville Predators. Nashville dictated the majority of the play in the first period as they held a 9-2 shots advantage and kept the Devils offensive chances limited. Captain Roman Josi got the Predators on the board first at the 7:31 mark during 4 on 4 play. Josi received a pass at the offensive blue line and skated the puck towards the face off circle where he wristed a shot that trickled past Devils goalie Jonathan Bernier for the 1-0 lead and his seventh goal of the campaign. That would be the only goal of the period as Nashville would take a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Phillip Tomasino early in the second period found his way to the front of the net & chipped the puck in to extend Nashville’s lead to 2-0. That was his fourth goal of the season. It was another dominant period for Nashville as they kept up the pressure from the first period and barely gave the Devils anything. Tomasino’s goal would stand for the only goal scored in the period as the Predators would have a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

Mikael Granlund improved Nashville’s lead to 3-0 at the 6:45 mark of the third period scoring his fifth goal of the season. Granlund received a nice pass on the backhand from Matt Duchene and then roofed it over Bernier’s glove for the goal. After being outplayed and hustled for most of the game, the Devils finally got on the board at the 11:58 mark thanks to Andreas Johnsson who scored his seventh goal of the season. Johnsson got a pass to the side of the net from Dawson Mercer and then buried it into the back of the net for the goal. New Jersey tried clawing their way back but ultimately it was too late as Alexandre Carrier scored an empty net goal to make it 4-1. The Devils did score one more time as Tomas Tatar scored his third of the season but it didn’t make much difference as they would lose to the Nashville Predators by a final score of 4-2. New Jersey returns back home to take on division rivals in the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night.

Kraken Weekly: Introducing the Kraken

Hello Seattle Kraken fans! I’m Scott Fairchild, and I am proud to be bringing you weekly coverage of your exciting new expansion team as they navigate their inaugural season and beyond right here at The Xperience Hockey Talk. Let’s get down to business here. There was a lot of good things going on during the first two weeks of the season and Kraken fans should feel excited about them. We had the first game in franchise history against the Vegas Golden Knights as well as two other exciting games and eventually the first home game in franchise history at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle (which looks absolutely beautiful by the way!). To begin the season, the Seattle Kraken have been playing on the road as the final fishing touches were being made at Climate Pledge Arena before the home opener against the rival Vancouver Canucks on October 23rd. Let’s take a look back at the first two weeks in the history of the Seattle Kraken:

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT.

1st game in franchise history (@ Vegas Golden Knights, 10/12/21)

It was an exciting night as the Seattle Kraken played their very first game in franchise history as they took on the Vegas Golden Knights on the road at T-Mobile arena. Despite outshooting Vegas in the first period, the Golden Knights struck twice with goals from Max Pacioretty and Jonathan Marchessault to give them a 2-0 lead.

Pacioretty would score his second goal of the game at the 6:36 mark of the second period to make it 3-0 Vegas. However, the moment Kraken fans were waiting for happened at the 11:32 mark as Ryan Donato scored the first goal in franchise history as he put in the rebound on his backhand in front of the net. That wouldn’t be all as Jared McCann would score his first goal of the season to get Seattle within one goal heading into their third period.

Morgan Geekie evened the score up with a laser of a shot from the right face-off circle at the 7:36 mark of period three to make this game very interesting. However, the Vegas Golden Knights would get the game winner a minute later as Chandler Stephenson would deflect in a Mark Stone pass off of his skate which went to video review to determine if it was a kicking motion. Upon video review, it was determined to be a good goal and the Vegas Golden Knights would defeat the Seattle Kraken by a final score of 4-3.

1st win in franchise history (10/14/21 @ Nashville Predators

Thursday night was a joyous night to be a Seattle Kraken fan as the team got its first win in franchise history against the Nashville Predators. Eeli Tolvanen got the Predators on the board first as he gathered the puck off the face-off, and sent a quick shot that would beat goalie Philipp Grubauer on the short side for a 1-0 lead. Later on in the first period, the Kraken were able to take the lead on back to back power play goals from Jared McCann and Brandon Tanev as both would wrist shots that would beat goalie Jusse Saros to give the Kraken a 2-1 lead heading into period two.

Roman Jossi got the score evened again at the 4:36 mark on the power play with a beautiful one-timer shot from the point. Moments later, Alexander Wennberg helped the Kraken retake the lead as he tapped in a pass from Alex Barre-Boulet at the doorstep for his first goal of the season. Seattle would take a 3-2 lead heading into the third and final period.

The final period was a tight checking type of play from both teams as the Kraken fought really hard to lock down things down to get their first win. Brandon Tanev added his second goal of the night and season with an empty netter. However, Michael Grandlund got Nashville back within one with about forty seconds left but it was too late as the Seattle Kraken held on for their first win in franchise history!

1st overtime game in franchise history (@ Columbus Blue Jackets 10/16/21)

This game between the Seattle Kraken and Columbus Blue Jackets was a very tight checking and defensive type of hockey game between the two teams. Period one saw no scoring on either side and saw a close shot on goal count (Columbus lead 6-5). However, the Kraken got on the scoreboard first as Brandon Tanev added his third goal of the season. Tanev showed patience while skating towards the net, and then went to his backhand and lifted the puck upstairs for the 1-0 lead. That would be the only goal so far heading into period three.

About midway through period three, Eric Robinson evened things up for the Blue Jackets for his first goal of the season. Robinson picked up the loose puck and fired it top shelf to beat Philipp Grubauer to tie the game up at 1-1. This game was a very tight one that would need overtime to settle the outcome. It would be Patrik Laine who would be the hero for the Blue Jackets as he skated towards the right face-off circle and fire a laser of a wrist shot for the game winning goal and give his team a 2-1 victory over the Kraken.

1st home game ever @ Climate Pledge Arena vs rival Vancouver Canucks (10/23/21)

Obviously, this was the day all Seattle Kraken fans have been waiting for ever since it was announced an NHL franchise would be coming to Seattle back in December of 2018. The first ever home game at Climate Pledge Arena was hosted and boy is it a gorgeous looking arena and amazing atmosphere! What makes this night even more exciting is a matchup with close proximity rivals from the north in the Vancouver Canucks. Let’s take a look at the action from this special night. The first period featured a lot of tight checking with some scoring opportunities but it did take a bit to get things going offensively. Before time expired, the Seattle Kraken scored their first goal ever at Climate Pledge Arena as Vince Dunn fired a wrist shot that would go off the bar and in. That goal gave the Kraken a 1-0 lead heading into period two.

Midway through the second period, the Canucks tied the game 1-1 as captain Bo Horvat got the puck in the high slot and ripped a shot under the pads of Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer for his second goal of the season. That would be all the scoring for period two as we head into the third and final period. Slightly over five minutes into the third period, Kraken captain Mark Giordano scored his first of the season to give his team the lead back as he skated towards the left face off circle and fired a shot that would beat Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko making the score 2-1. Unfortunately for Seattle, the Vancouver would spoil their opening night fun as Bo Horvat tied the game, and then Conor Garland would score the game winner as well as an empty net goal from Justin Dowling to give the Canucks the win by a final score of 4-2. Despite the loss, it was a night to remember seeing the first goal scored at home and enjoying the game atmosphere while seeing how beautiful the arena is and how much energy the fans brought.

How’s it Kraken? My thoughts on the first two weeks

The very first week in Seattle Kraken history was a very good one with a lot to be proud of. Sure, they didn’t win the first game in franchise history but, so what? Despite getting down 2-0 & eventually losing 4-3 to a great team like the Vegas Golden Knights, they showed me a lot of how this team is going to play and can play. They certainly didn’t quit, wouldn’t back down or go away quietly. They were in that game and almost won. They built off of that in the next game and got the result they wanted as they beat the Nashville Predators.

Saturday night in Columbus showed what we already knew about the Kraken which was they were going to be strong on the back end with their defense and goaltending. What we didn’t know was how good would their offense be and where their goals would come from. I saw a team this week and especially in the first two games that they are very strong on the forecheck and have good speed. They can win the battles in the tough areas and get goals at the front of the net. I was really impressed in particular with Brandon Tanev’s offensive game scoring three goals this week. Jared McCann is off to a good start as well centering the top line with Jaden Schwartz and Jordan Eberle. The only concern I had during the first week was the bottom pairing of the defense with Vince Dunn and Jeremy Lauzon. I don’t like that pairing at all and they bring out the worst in each other defensively even though Dunn does bring a lot offensively on D. Dave Hakstoll might want to re-think that pair for the time being.

Week two was not as good as the first week as they lost all three games this week against a very good Philadelphia Flyers, a young New Jersey Devils, and rival Vancouver Canucks in their home opener. Against Philly, the Kraken were completely outmatched. The Flyers offense and improved defense were too much for Seattle. In New Jersey, it was a close game at the end but couldn’t capitalize on the chances they had offensively. In the home opener against Vancouver, it was an even game but the offense of the Canucks proved to be better and capitalized on more of their chances than the Kraken did. Obviously this week while exciting with the home opener happening, wasn’t the best week. Scoring was very limited and this week exposed the Kraken for not having an x-factor or a dynamic goal scorer on the team. In defense of the team, they’re still learning and adapting to coach Dave Hakstol’s system but they do need to start hitting the back of the net more often soon. Let’s see what happens this week as they continue their opening home stand at home against the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, and the New York Rangers. Have a great week in the Emerald City Kraken fans!

2021-22 Preview

The Nashville Predators enter the 2021-22 season with a lot of key players departing. In goal Pekke Rinne has called it a career and leaves Juuse Saros as the number one goalie in Nashville’s net. The Predators would go out and sign David Rittich to back up Saros, and bring stability to their crease.

On defense the trade finally happened and the Predators shipped Ryan Ellis to Philadelphia for Philippe Myers, and Erik Gudbranson would depart via free agency. Despite the loss of Ellis, Myers is a good young defender, and the overall core of the Predators defense is still intact.

On offense things still look a little bleak for the Predators. Ryan Johansen and Matt Duchene have been very underwhelming with their production and are proving to be horrible contracts for the Predators. The departures of Calle Jarnkrok, Viktor Arvidsson, and Erik Haula is a shakeup to their depth, and will look to others for offensive production, but overall, it could be rough season offensively.

Luke Kunin — Mikael Granlund — Eeli Tolvanen

TXHT Jersey Share – Smashing the Road

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to another edition of TXHT Jersey Share where today we take a look at the Nashville Predators road jersey courtesy of Cool Hockey.

In my second Cool Hockey Mystery Box I received the Predators current road jersey. The Preds have been wearing this version since debuting them with the rest of the Adidas line in 2017. A good simple jersey. Little surprising they went with a shoulder patch on the right shoulder only instead of being on both shoulders like most teams normally do, but it’s not that big of an issue. I think doing the piano keyboard on the inside of the collar is a really nice touch, and having it say “NASHVILLE” on the back of the collar is also very different and unique. It’s your basic road jersey, and it’s ok.

Duncan Keith’s New Home

After spending his entire career in the Windy City, Duncan Keith is now calling Edmonton home after a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Oilers. The trade gives the Oilers and past three time Stanley Cup winner, but also gives Duncan Keith the ability to be closer to home to his son Colton.

Good trade by Chicago to unload some cap space, and good move for Edmonton getting some needed depth on defense.

Pekka Rinne’s Farewell

Being able to spend your entire career with one franchise is something special. Pekka Rinne got that as he announced his retirement from the NHL after 15 seasons, all of which with the Nashville Predators.

I’m not surprised by this though. Rinne I didn’t see wanting to go to another team to try to win the Cup. He had a great career and now it’s Juuse Saros time to shine in Nashville.

Pierre McGuire to Ottawa

Honestly didn’t see this coming but really glad he’s not going to be on ESPN or Turner. Just can’t stand him as an analyst. Of course now we have to deal with Barry Melrose on ESPN, and we still have that parrot EJ Hradek on NHL Network to unfortunately deal with.

The Buyouts Hitting Hard

Buyouts are happening and to all the right people, whether they agree to them or not. It had a Wild start as Minnesota would buy out forward Zach Parise and defenseman Ryab Suter.

Story on this one is nuts. General Manager Bill Guerin calls Suter first, and Suter doesn’t pick up the phone. Guerin then calls Parise and tells him about the buyout. Parise is upset and calls Suter, who gets a call from Guerin again and then proceeds to just hang up the phone on Guerin after being told he was bought out. Just crazy.

Then you got Keith Yandle being bought out by the Florida Panthers. More business as usual, but also not surprising. All three buyouts were going to happen.

Now just waiting on official confirmation on that dirtbag Tony DeAngelo’s buyout by the New York Rangers.

Moves Ahead of Expansion

So there are a lot of moves so I’m going to go one by one real quick and just give my quick thoughts.

  • New Jersey trades Mikhail Maltsev (F) and a pick to Colorado for Ryan Graves (D).
    • Smart move for the Devils, but also one that can come back to haunt them too. Graves is a good young solid defender that will upgrade the D corps, but at the same time they gave away Maltsev who was impressive this past season. Either way, I see great things for both players in their new locales.
  • Detroit adds Nick Leddy (D) in exchange for Richard Panik (F).
    • Poor Richard Panik. The guy can’t catch a break. Also the Wings are retaining 50% of his salary too so that’s a coup for the Islanders. However, the Isles just hurt their defense by trading one their only two really good puck moving defensemen. Leddy is a guy the Isles should’ve kept and protected. Their mistake is Detroit’s gain here.
  • Dallas did a signing and a trade.
    • First the Stars started with re-signing defensive stalwart Miro Heiskanen to an 8 year deal with an AAV of $8.45 million per season. Good solid signing for a team that has their top defensemen locked up for the foreseeable future.
    • Then they would trade forward Jason Dickinson to the Vancouver Canucks for a 3rd Round Pick in this year’s draft. This move makes sense as they may not have been able to protect him, so it’s better to get something for him than nothing at all.
The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT
  • The Rangers made a couple trades. One for the better. One for getting something back in return.
    • The Rangers acquired Barclay Goodrow (F) from Tampa Bay, and honestly this is a move the Rangers needed to make. They needed to get a little tougher and Goodrow brings that. Also it was know that he wasn’t going to be back in Tampa so the Lightning get a pick and the Rangers get exclusive negotiating rights.
    • The other move saw the Rangers move forward Brett Howden to Vegas for defenseman Nick DeSimone. Odds are that Howden could have been selected in the expansion draft so getting DeSimone in return alleviates that a bit even though he would be left unprotected too.
  • Massive Three Team Trade
    • So before I break this trade down super quick, I called my dad when the news broke it was going to happen. He expressed great disappointment and echoed what he said when Chuck Fletcher was hired by the Flyers, “Fire Chuck Fletcher”. The Flyers traded away Philippe Myers (D) and Nolan Patrick (F) to Nashville for Ryan Ellis (D). The Predators would then flip Patrick to Vegas for Cody Glass (F). Philippe Myers was possibly the Flyers second best defenseman, behind Ivan Provorov, and the upside to him is enormous. Trading Myers for Ellis will haunt them unless the win the Stanley Cup this upcoming season. Patrick I can see why they traded him, but it looks like Fletcher didn’t want to wait on Patrick to continue to develop after missing a lot of time due to migraine issues.
  • Here are some trades that I don’t have comments on but were made before the roster freeze:
The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

The Women’s Landscape

There was a lot of movement in the NWHL this past week as we would see Mariah Fujimagari re-sign with the Connecticut Whale, plus multiple signings by the Buffalo Beauts, Metropolitan Riveters, and a signing by the Toronto Six.

The Boston Pride would announce a new General Manager while the Riveters General Manager would commit an “ice crime” (watch the games on Twitch and you’ll know why it’s called that), but massive respect to Anya Packer for stepping up and admitting that she made a mistake. Transparency like that helps us grow.

Lastly, earlier in the week Elena Orlando announced her retirement from professional women’s hockey after playing six seasons with the Whale. She was a standout defender, and with fellow defender Shannon Doyle retired after 6 seasons as well, the Whale have some huge voids to fill.

The Capitals

Ok so in all fairness this wouldn’t be a proper article if I didn’t talk about the Washington Capitals. Solet’s hop into it as I have three topics I want to touch on.

  • Vladimir Tarasenko
    • It’s been made known that Tarasenko wants out of St. Louis, and he will be exposed in the expansion draft for Seattle to take if they choose. Tarasenko has two years left on his current deal with a $7.5 million cap hit. Oh, and he has had three surgeries in the last two years on the same shoulder.
    • Tarasenko is damaged goods, and an expensive one at that. I personally wouldn’t trade for Tarasenko. Between his shoulder and his cap hit, he isn’t someone that I would deem as desirable.
  • Ryan Suter
    • So after being bought out by the Wild rumors began to swirl that the Caps had interest in him. Please no. For the past few seasons Suter has been unable to remain healthy and his play has dipped excessively. It’d honestly be safer to re-sign Zdeno Chara for another year than to sign Suter.
  • The Expansion Draft
    • As we prepare for Seattle to select their inaugural team we need to temper expectations. Between who the third defenseman they’ll protect to whether it’s Vitek Vanecek or Ilya Samsonov that’s going to be protected, one thing is for sure. Expect the unexpected. When Vegas came into the League we all thought that they were going to select Philipp Grubauer, but instead threw us a curveball and selected Nate Schmidt instead. We need to be ready for something like that when the list become available. We may see one thing, but then the Kraken go another direction. So let’s keep it chill as we wait and see who Seattle really selects.

Hurricanes v. Predators – Canes Advance in 4th Straight OT Game

#1 Carolina Hurricanes v. #4 Nashville Predators – Game 6
Hurricanes Lead Series 3-2

Game Recap:

In Nashville the Predators will look to stay alive and use the home crowd to their advantage as the Carolina Hurricanes look to take the series here in game six. In the first period things would start quickly as we would see our first goal less than two minutes into the game as Nick Cousins would score to give the Preds the 1-0 lead, and shortly after Brock McGinn would score his third of the series to tie the game at one for the Canes. Seconds after the tying goal Andrei Svechnikov would take an ill-advised tripping penalty, but the Canes would be up to the task and kill the Preds powerplay opportunity. After the penalty would be killed, both teams would settle into the game, and it would remain tied a one heading into the first intermission.

Then in the second period the Predators would be all over the Hurricanes as Mikael Granlund would strike 73 seconds into the period to retake the lead for the Preds. After the goal Granlund would be called for tripping, but the Canes powerplay would be cut short as Dougie Hamilton would be called for Interference, and then Sebastian Aho would be called for Slashing to give the Preds the two man advantage which would see Ryan Johansen strike to grow the Preds lead to two. While the Preds were still surging, Matt Benning would get called for interference and give the Canes their second powerplay of the game, and this time they would strike as Sebastion Aho would redirect Hamilton’s point shot to get the Canes back within one. In the final two minutes of the period Brady Skjei would be called for cross checking, but the Canes were able to withstand the Predators attack to finish the period still down by one.

In the third period the Canes would unleash a storm on the offensive zone. First with a powerplay that they wouldn’t score on, but would help them build their momentum. Then in the second half of the period Dougie Hamilton would redirect a pass from Jaccob Slavin past Juuse Saros to tie the game at three for the Canes, who would also outshoot the Preds 16-5 in the third period to force overtime for the fourth consecutive game.

The 66 seconds into overtime Jaccob Slavin would call game as he would have his shot deflected by Sebastian Aho to score to give the Hurricanes the 4-3 victory to take the 4-2 series win to move on to the second round to face the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Hurricanes v. Predators – Staal Strikes Early in OT for Canes

#4 Nashville Predators v. #1 Carolina Hurricanes – Game 5
Series Tied 2-2

Game Recap:

Returning to Carolina for game five, the Hurricanes and Nashville Predators look to take the 3-2 series lead after Nashville won the last two games at home to tie the series at two. In the first period Yakov Trenin would open the scoring for the Preds after they couldn’t capitalize on the powerplay to take the 1-0 lead. Then a few minutes later on their first powerplay of the game it would be Martin Necas with a bullet of a shot to tie the game at one.

In the second period Trenin would strike again, this time 53 seconds into the period to give the Preds the lead back. The Canes would get a powerplay opportunity, and while they would get their chances on net, the Preds would do a good job of killing the penalty. Shortly after the penalty ended the Canes thought that they tied the game, but after a coach’s challenge for goalie interference, the goal would be overturned and the Preds would take the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Then in the third period Martin Necas would strike once again for the Canes to tie the game at two, and with the goal, it would send the game to overtime for the third consecutive game. However, we would only need 1:44 of overtime as Jordan Staal would strike to give the Hurricanes the 3-2 victory and 3-2 series lead.

Hurricanes v. Predators – Kunin’s 2nd of the Game Ties Series in Double OT

#1 Carolina Hurricanes v. #4 Nashville Predators – Game 4
Hurricanes Lead Series 2-1

Game Recap:

In game four in Nashville the Predators look to even the series and force a game six later in the week as they host the Carolina Hurricanes before the series shifts back to Raleigh for game five. In the first period the Preds would start on fire as Luke Kunin would net his first of the playoffs to give the Preds the 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the game. The Canes would get two powerplay opportunities, but despite their best efforts they would not be able to score on either opportunity. However, after both powerplay chances the Canes would strike as Vincent Trocheck would jam in the puck while attacking the net to tie the game at one with less than two minutes left in the period.

Then in the second period Ryan Johansen would find the loose puck in a hectic slot area to give the Preds the lead once again. The Canes would get their third powerplay of the game, but the Predators would be up to the task to keep the Canes off the board. However, once again in the final two minutes of the period the Canes would strike as Brock McGinn would score to tie the game at two.

In the third period the Canes would strike 13 seconds into the period as McGinn would net his second of the game to give the Hurricanes their first lead of the game, but it would not last long as Dougie Hamilton would take a penalty to give the Preds their first powerplay of the game and Nick Cousins would strike to tie the game at three and to overtime for the second straight game.

After 36 minutes of overtime action, it would be Luke Kunin with his second of the game to give the Predators the 4-3 victory to tie the series at two for the Predators.

Predators v. Hurricanes – Canes Shutout Preds in Penalty Filled Game 2

#4 Nashville Predators v. #1 Carolina Hurricanes – Game 2
Hurricanes Lead Series 1-0

Game Recap:

Back in Carolina for game two, both the Hurricanes and the Nashville Predators would play in a penalty filled period that would see Sebastian Aho score on the Canes second powerplay opportunity to take the 1-0 lead. The Predators would get four opportunities on the powerplay, but would squander all four chances as the Canes would play with a high tempo to give the Preds difficulties when on the man advantage.

Come the second period both teams would still continue to play undisciplined hockey as they would combine for seven penalties with Nashville getting the majority of the powerplay opportunities. However, the Preds would continue to squander their chances due the Canes excellent penalty killing. The Predators would outshoot the Hurricanes 15 to 10 in the period, but they couldn’t get any in the net to tie the game as the Canes took the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

Then in the third period the Canes would give the Preds their seventh powerplay of the game, but once again the Canes would not allow the Preds to capitalize on the opportunity. In the final minute of the game Aho would hit the empty net for his second of the game and then Warren Foegele would bank a pass off of a Predators defender to give the Hurricanes the 3-0 victory and the 2-0 series lead as the series will shift over to Nashville on Friday.
