Blue Jackets ground Bolts 54-2. Tampa splits road trip against Columbus

Just hours before puck drop in the Largest Snall town in America, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced a blockbuster trade bringing in Finnish Super star Patrick Laine from the Winnipeg jets in exchange for Pierre Luc-Dubois . CBJ looked to bounce back after being clearly distracted the previous game. Dubois did not play at all after the first period. The tension between former Lightning head coach and current CBJ head coach John Tortorella and Columbus’s third overall pick from 2016 was thick enough to cut with a knife. The Blue Jackets will be without Laine for now. He will need to complete a quarantine before he can join the team. The storm cloud over the team appears to be gone. Tampa looks to be that storm cloud this afternoon and continue to be a sore spot in the Blue Jackets side.

The first period was raining goals. Victor Hedman kicked off the scoring. With a spectacular Between the legs backhand shot following the offensive rush. The puck leaked through Columbus netminder Elvis Merzikins to put the bolts up 1-0 early in the game. Columbus responded with a flurry of goals from captain Nick Foligno, Mikhail Grigorenko and Vladislav Gavrikov getting on the scoreboard. the Gavrikov goal coming in with under a minute left in the period making it 3-1. Just seconds later Ondri Palat playing in career game number 500 continues his hot streak. Tapping home, team leading goal number 3 on the season to bring Tampa within one with 24 seconds left in the first period. Palat was the beneficiary of a gorgeous feed from Brayden Point as the Lightning power play continues to buzz. Hedman added another point to his day with the secondary assist.

The goalies kept the score the same after a tight second period. Andri Vaseleski making his 4th straight start this season stopped all 8 shots in the middle frame. The Lightning seemed to have swung momentum after an excellent penalty kill, an area the team is looking to improve in. Heading to the locker room the Bolts looked to make the necessary adjustments as they continue to look to go unbeaten in their first 4 games for the second time in franchise history.

It was not to be. Zach Werenski scored against a exhausted Tampa Squad with 13:24 left in the 3rd to put the lead back at two goals. Tampa players were beginning to show signs of fatigue being chased around by a pesky Columbus team. Vasilevskiy looked like he had started all of games so far being a little shakey in net after 3 excellent starts. The team should be excitingly awaiting the return of Curtis Mchellany off of the COVID-19 reserve to take some pressure and wear & tear off the 26 year old Russian netminder. Erik Robinson added an empty net goal to down Tampa 5-2. Columbus handing Tampa their first loss of the season. Vasileskiy stopped 23 of 27 shots against him. Near the midway mark In the 3rd period Tampa forward Mitchell Stephans went down and appeared to not be able to put any weight on his right leg As he was helped off the ice. He would not return. Erik Cernak who took a nasty hit from Nick Foligno in the 1st period was unable to return to the game as well with an undisclosed injury. The bruised up Bolts will make their way back to the sunshine state after the game with their match up in Raleigh against former southeast division foes The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday appearing to be in jeopardy. For the first time this season Tampa did not allow a man advantage goal and the team still looks lethal on an “off day” No love lost in Columbus. These teams will meet again 6 more times in just the regular season. A playoff matchup for the 3rd straight year looking very possible.

Lightning Strike Down CBJ in Overtime

The Bolts rolled into Ohio looking to remain unbeaten facing another grudge match with central division rivals Columbus Blue Jackets. The Lightning finally getting into action after two games against their 2020 Stanley Cup nemesis Dallas Stars were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns early this week. Chris Gibson was called up from the taxi squad. To Back up the bolts as Curtis Mchelleny is out on the covid reserve list. The Bolts were fortunate to have forward Blake Coleman back from the reserve after he was placed on it earlier in the week.

The story of the game was arguably off the ice. With Pierre-Luc Dubois, the 3rd overall pick in the 2016 draft, asking to be traded earlier in the week. Dubois is a high skilled player who will no doubt be a part of a blockbuster trade coming soon. The team said that this wasn’t a distraction but Dubois was noticeably absent from the Columbus man advantage and recorded a career low 3:55 TOI and zero shots. Clearly uncomfortable and tense on the bench with John Tortorella.

Shots after the first 20 minutes shots were deadlocked at 10 each. Oliver Bjkstrand who had a gordie Howe hat trick on Monday in the Blue Jackets 3-2 Win over Detroit, put CBJ up 1-0 just 21 seconds into the first period. The period came to a close without a penalty against either team headed into the middle frame. The momentum in the hands of Columbus.

After a tightly battled 2nd period. In the final five minutes of the period. Blake Coleman who was recently activated from the Covid reserve list got his 2nd goal of the season. Ryan Mcdougnah recorded his 300th career point. Finishing a gorgeous Tic Tac Toe play starting with a yanni gourde pass to The veteran defenseman who fed Coleman a perfect tap in goal. The former ranger captain added point 301 with another assist feeding a tape to tape one time pass, to mathiue Josephs for his second tally of the season just under 90 seconds later. The lightning seemed to get into a groove in the final 10 minutes of the period. A distinct change in team energy after killing off a penalty to Alex Killorn and finally putting the puck in the net after more than half the game.

Like the first period the Bolts didn’t start the final frame off great. Blue Jackets Captain Nick Foligno tied up the game 47 seconds into the 3rd period. giving the Blue Jackets their first power play goal of the season. The bolts have allowed 3 power play goals in as many games this season. goals against their penalty kill account for 3 of 5 goals against for the whole season. Tampa was Unable to convert on any of their power plays. The bolts haven’t scored on the man advantage since opening night when they converted 2 Power plays against Chicago. Luke Schenn dropped the gloves with Nick Foligno at the mid way mark of the 3rd trying to ignite the bench to rally for a strong finish, in front of yet another fantastic performance in goal from Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Tampa Bay and Columbus are going into overtime again. Another excellent contest between the two franchises. The superstars came to play. The hero of the 5 OT game one marathon game last summer, struck again. Brayden point with helpers from Conn Smythe winner Victor Hedman and captain Steven Stamkos delivered home another heroic moment scoring the winner with just under 2 minutes remaining in the overtime. Handing the Bolts their 3rd straight win to start the season and a 2nd consecutive extra time loss for Columbus.

The penalty kill and poor starts to periods were glaring errors on an otherwise well polished unit. Not a perfect 60 minutes but with a little extra time the lightning were able to do what matters most. Win. With 53 games to go, their is optimism the boys from Thunder Bay can tune up their weak spots over the course of this rapid fire season. The Bolts are rolling, and have to be happy after their first close victory of the season.

Reverse Retro: Metropolitan Division

Continuing with the NHL’s Reverse Retro jersey reveals, today we are going to take a look at the Metropolitan Division

Carolina Hurricanes:

The Carolina Hurricanes are going back to the Hartford Whalers days with this 1979 look. The jersey mirrors what was worn during the 1979-1980 season, however the base colour of this jersey is gray and it ties together the Hurricanes and Whalers colours. The vintage Pucky the Whale is also featured on the shoulders of the jerseys as well.

Columbus Blue Jackets:

Columbus is making their inaugural season (2000-2001) jersey the inspiration here, with the only difference being that the base colour of the jersey is red.

New Jersey Devils:

The look is going back to their first season in New Jersey (1982-1983 season) featured the red and green colours. For the first time in franchise history, they will be wearing a primarily green jersey.

NY Islanders:

This one, I feel is the weakest and it can be said in only one real way. The only difference is the base colour of the jersey. Everything else about it is the exact same.

The team, however, says their going back to the start of their Cup-winning era from 1980-1983 and the navy blue base colour of the jersey is a nod to Islander legends Mike Bossy, Bobby Nystrom, Clark Gillies, and Bryan Trottier.

NY Rangers:

LADY LIBERTY has returned!!

The original look from 1996 has been updated. The jersey is updated with an all blue sleeve but keeps the silver accents and drop shadow numbers.

Philadelphia Flyers:

The Flyers are going back to a 1995 pseudo look. 1995 is the year in which Eric Lindros would go on to win the Hart Trophy as MVP as well as when the Flyers would win the division title.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Penguins are going with a 1997 look mixed with the Pittsburgh diagonal lettering. 1997 would also be the year in which Mario Lemieux would win his sixth scoring title. The Reverse Retro also flips the base colour of the jersey from black to white.

Washington Capitals:

The Capitals are going back to the look from their first Stanley Cup finals appearance from the 1997-1998 season. The only changes from this are the colours. Out are the blue, black and bronze. The only addition to the colours of the current look is a slight hint of silver.

Tomorrow Michael will rank the Reverse Retro jerseys.
