Thursday morning the Washington Capitals announced that they have hired Ray Bennett as a new assistant coach for Spencer Carbery’s staff.

Bennett, 64, spent the 2025-26 season with the New York Islanders and the previous eight seasons with the Colorado Avalanche which included winning the Stanley Cup in 2022.
Bennett, an Innisfail, Alberta native, brings 25 years of NHL coaching experience that also featured tenures with the St. Louis Blues from 2007 to 2017 and the Los Angeles Kings from 1999 to 2006.
Bennett replaces the recently departed Kirk Muller, whose contract will be set to expire soon, and will run the Capitals powerplay. During Bennett’s time with the Avalanche, they would have the fifth best powerplay in the NHL averaging at around 23 percent during the regular season, and ranking fourth around 24.3 percent during the playoffs.
