  • Both the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled their Winter Classic jerseys.
    • The Bruins jersey is inspired by a variety of looks the Bruins have had over the years.
    • The Penguins jersey is inspired by the original NHL franchise from 1925, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

  • The IIHF announced that the Russian Ice Hockey Federation has been sanctioned with a reprimand for violations to the IIHF Ethics Code.
    • The IIHF referred the case to the IIHF Disciplinary Board due to concerns of a potential violation to the Ethics Code due to propaganda for the war in Ukraine by clubs and leagues under their jurisdiction.
    • Russia’s inaction to prevent the propaganda promoting the war from being used at games, the IIHF decided on the reprimand.

Game Recaps

  • Carolina Hurricanes v. Boston Bruins – 1p ET
    • In Boston the Bruins would play host to the Carolina Hurricanes, and in the first period Stefan Noesen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi would both strike on the powerplay to give the Canes the 2-0 lead. In the second period David Krejci would score to get the B’s on the board and back within one. Then in the third period Krejci would strike again for his second of the game to tie it up at two to force overtime. In the extra frame David Pastrnak would score the game winner to complete the comeback and give the Bruins the 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes. The win would also set an NHL record as the Bruins would open the season with a 12-0-0 record at home.
  • Colorado Avalanche v. Nashville Predators – 2p ET
    • Postponed due to flooding at Bridgestone Arena
  • Montreal Canadiens v. Chicago Blackhawks – 2p ET
    • In Chicago the Blackhawks would rock their Reverse Retro jerseys as they host their Original Six rival Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Joel Edmundson would score his first of the season to give the Habs the 1-0 lead. In the second period Nick Suzuki would score for the Habs to grow their lead to two, but Caleb Jones would score to get the Blackhawks onto the board and back within one. Then in the third period Taylor Raddysh would score to tie the game at two to send the game at overtime for the Blackhawks. After a scoreless extra five minutes of hockey it would be Kirby Dach in the shootout to give the Canadiens the 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks.
  • Toronto Maple Leafs v. Minnesota Wild – 2p ET
    • In Minnesota the Wild would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period Kirill Kaprizov would score for the Wild, but goals from Mitch Marner and Zach Aston-Reese would give the Leafs the 2-1 lead. In the second period Matt Boldy would score for the Wild to tie the game at two, but Calle Jarnkrok would score to retake the lead for the Leafs. Then in the third period Mats Zuccarello would score for the Wild, but an earlier tally from William Nylander would give the Maple Leafs the 4-3 victory over the Wild.
  • Calgary Flames v. Washington Capitals – 2p ET
    • In Washington the Capitals would look to blackout the Calgary Flames while rocking their Reverse Retro jerseys, and in the first period TJ Oshie would score to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. In the second period Evgeny Kuznetsov would score a highlight reel goal as he would score while sliding on his backside to give the Caps the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Alex Ovechkin would net his 11th of the season and 791st career NHL goal and Darcy Kuemper would stop all 32 shots faced to record his second shutout of the season as the Capitals would defeat the Flames 3-0.
  • Ottawa Senators v. Anaheim Ducks – 3p ET
    • In Anaheim the Ducks would play host to the Ottawa Senators, and in the first period Brady Tkachuk and Derick Brassard would score to give the Sens the 2-0 lead. In the second period Tim Stutzle and Artem Zub would score to grow the Sens lead to four. Then in the third period Max Jones would score for the Ducks, but Mathieu Joseph would score to give the Senators the 5-1 victory over the Ducks.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins v. Philadelphia Flyers – 530p ET
    • In the Battle of Pennsylvania it would also be a Reverse Retro battle as well as the Philadelphia Flyers would host the Pittsburgh Penguins, and in the first period Josh Archibald and Sidney Crosby would score to give the Pens the 2-0 lead. In the second period Ryan Poehling would net a pair of goals to grow the Pens lead to four. Then in the third period Kevin Hayes would score for the Flyers, but the Penguins would hold on to defeat the Flyers 4-1.
  • Seattle Kraken v. Vegas Golden Knights – 8p ET
    • In Vegas the Golden Knights would host the Seattle Kraken, and in the first period Ryan Donato and Andre Burakovsky would score to give the Kraken the 2-0 lead, but Nicolas Roy and Phil Kessel would score to tie the game at two. In the second period Burakovsky would net his second of the game to retake the lead for the Kraken, and then Jordan Eberle would score to grow the Kraken’s lead to two. Then after a scoreless third period the Kraken would go on to take the 4-2 victory over the Golden Knights.
  • Arizona Coyotes v. Detroit Red Wings – 8p ET
    • In Detroit the Arizona Coyotes would come to town to faceoff with the Red Wings, and in the first period Andrew Copp would score to give the Wings the 1-0 lead. In the second period Filip Hronek would score to grow the Wings lead to two, but Nick Schmaltz would score to get the Yotes on the board and back within one. However, Jordan Oesterle would score to retake the two goal lead for the Wings, but the Yotes won’t stay down as JJ Moser would score to get the Yotes back within one. Then in the third period Jakob Chychrun would score to tie the game at three to force overtime for the Yotes. After a scoreless five minutes of extra hockey it would be Dylan Larkin in the shootout to give the Red Wings the 4-3 victory over the Coyotes.
  • New York Islanders v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 8p ET
    • In Columbus the Blue Jackets would host the New York Islanders, and in the first period Oliver Wahlstrom would score for the Isles to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jean-Gabriel Pageau would strike on the powerplay to grow the Isles lead to two, but Yegor Chinakov and Kent Johnson would both score on the powerplay to tie the game at two for the Jackets. Then in the third period Brock Nelson would score to give the Islanders the 3-2 victory over the Blue Jackets.
  • New Jersey Devils v. Buffalo Sabres – 8p ET
    • In Buffalo the Sabres would go from rocking the original version of the Goathead to their Reverse Retro version as they host the New Jersey Devils, and after a scoreless first period Jack Hughes and Jesper Boqvist would score to give the Devils the 2-0 lead, but Victor Olofsson would score to get the Sabres back within one. However, Tomas Tatar would score to retake the two goal lead for the Devils. After a scoreless third period the Devils would go on to defeat the Sabres 3-1.
  • St. Louis Blues v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 8p ET
    • In Tampa Bay the Lightning would take on the St. Louis Blues, and in the first period Brayden Point would net a pair of goals and Alex Killorn would score for the Bolts to take the 3-0 lead, but late in the period Pavel Buchnevich would score for the Blues to get them back within two. In the second period Jordan Kyrou would score for the Blues, but less than twenty seconds later Brandon Hagel would score to keep the Bolts ahead by two. Then in the third period Nick Paul would score to give the Lightning the 5-2 victory over the Blues.
  • Winnipeg Jets v. Dallas Stars – 830p ET
    • In Dallas the Stars would unveil their Reverse Retro jerseys as they take on the Winnipeg Jets, and in the first period both teams would trade a pair of goals as Cole Perfetti and Jansen Harkins would score for the Jets while Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn would score for the Stars for the 2-2 tie. In the second period Adam Lowry would score to give the Jets the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Kyle Connor would score to give the Jets the two goal lead, but while Jason Robertson would score a pair of goals for the Stars to tie the game at four and to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame it would be Josh Morrissey with the winner to give the Jets the 5-4 victory over the Stars.
  • Los Angeles Kings v. San Jose Sharks – 1030p ET
    • In San Jose the Sharks would honor the past with their California Golden Seals inspired Reverse Retro jerseys as they play host to the Los Angeles Kings, and in the first period Jaret Anderson-Dolan would net his first of the season to give the Kings the 1-0 lead, but Kevin Labanc would score to tie the game at one for the Sharks. However Phillip Danault would score to give the Kings the 2-1 lead. In the second period Victor Arvidsson would score to grow the Kings lead to two, but Alexander Barbanov would score for the Sharks to get them back within one. Then in the third period Rasmus Kupari and Anze Kopitar would score to give the Kings the 5-2 victory over the Sharks.
