Edmonton Oilers v. Colorado Avalanche
Game 1
Game Recap:
Heading to Colorado for Game 1 of the Western Conference Final the Edmonton Oilers and the Avalanche both look to make their return to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006 and 2002 respectively. In the first period Evander Kane would open things up with his 13th of the playoffs 5:04 in the game to give the Oilers the 1-0 lead, but 36 seconds later JT Compher would score to tie the game at one for the Avs. Then in the final five minutes of the period things would get crazy as Nathan MacKinnon would score to give the Avs their first lead of the game at 15:10, but then in the final minute Zach Hyman would tip one in to tie the game back up at two for the Oilers. However, nine seconds later Cale Makar would score to retake the lead for the Avs as they would take the 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period things would get crazy. Starting the period with leftover powerplay time from the first period Nazem Kadri would strike 32 seconds into the period to give the Avs the two goal lead. Then at the 2:59 mark Ryan McLeod would strike to get the Oilers back within one, but goals from Mikko Rantanen and Compher would give the Avalanche the 6-3 lead and chase Mike Smith from the Oilers net. Later in the period Andrew Cogliano would strike for the Avs to grow their lead to four, but 31 seconds later Connor McDavid would enter the chat as he would record his eighth of the playoffs to get the Oilers back within three as the Avalanche would take the 7-4 lead into the second intermission.
Then in the third period the Oilers would continue to climb their way back into this game as Derek Ryan would score early in the period, and after an ill-advised penalty by Gabriel Landeskog Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would score on the powerplay to bring the Oilers back within one. However, with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker it would be Landeskog making up for his bad penalty as he would hit the empty netter to give the Avalanche the 8-6 victory over the Oilers to take Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.
