Washington Capitals v. Florida Panthers
Game 5 – Series Tied 2-2
Game Recap:
Heading back to Florida for Game 5 the Washington Capitals look to bounce back after allowing the Panthers to even up the series at two games a piece the other night. In the first period the Caps would be off to a good start as they would get some good zone time to start the period and get a powerplay from their efforts as Carter Verhaeghe would get called for tripping. On the powerplay TJ Oshie would do it again as he would tip a John Carlson point shot to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. the Caps would then get back to back penalties as Nic Dowd would go to the box first, and then once his penalty was killed off Carlson would go to the box to give the Panthers their second powerplay of the period. However, the Caps would be up to the task and kill off the Carlson penalty as well. To end the period the Panthers would tilt the ice into the Caps zone, but the Caps would hold off the Panthers to keep the 1-0 lead as they head into the first intermission.
In the second period the Caps would start off strong as Justin Schultz would pick up the rebound in front of the net to net his first of the playoffs to give the Caps the 2-0 lead 2:13 into the period. Then a little over a minute later Oshie would net his second of the game to grow the Caps lead to three. However, the Panthers would bounce back as Carter Verhaeghe would strike off of a bounce from the boards to get the Panthers on the board. Then less than a three minute span Patric Hornqvist would strike on a breakaway after a breakdown in the neutral zone by the Caps defense, and Sam Reinhart would jam home the puck to tie the game at three for the Panthers. Both teams would trade abbreviated powerplays to end the period as they would go to the second intermission tied at three.
then going into the third period Carter Verhaeghe would remain a thorn in the Capitals side as he would net his second goal and fourth point of the game to give the Panthers their first lead of the game at 4-3. Then in the final five minutes of regulation Claude Giroux would strike on a cross ice pass from Verhaeghe to grow the Panthers lead to two. The Caps would pull Ilya Samsonov for the extra man, and despite a steady push, and fight between Anthony Mantha and Aaron Ekblad, but the Panthers would hold on to defeat the Capitals 5-3 and take the 3-2 series lead as they look to finish the series on Friday in Washington.
