With the series being split in New York. The series now shifts to Pittsburgh for the next two games. The first game saw the Pittsburgh Penguins come out on top by a score of 4-3 in triple overtime. The second game saw the New York Rangers get revenge by a score of 5-2.
Here is how the two teams would line up:
Early in the first period the Penguins would blitz the Rangers and earn the first goal of the game. The goal would come from Brock McGinn, it would be his first goal of the playoffs. The play was unassisted.
Four minutes later, the Rangers would answer right back. The goal would come from Kaapo Kakko, his first goal of the playoffs. The goal would also be Kakko’s first career NHL playoff goal. The assists on the play would come from Alexis Lafreniere and Filip Chytil.
Three minutes later, the Penguins would re-establish their lead in the matinee. The goal would come from Jeff Carter, his first goal of the playoffs. The goal would come via the power play. The assists on the play would come from Evan Rodrigues and Mike Matheson.
The Penguins would then establish a two goal lead in the game. The goal would come from Evan Rodrigues, his first goal of the playoffs. The goal would come via the power play, their second power play goal of the game. The assists on the play would come from Mike Matheson, his second point of the game and goalie Louis Domingue.
Before the end of the first period, the Penguins would add an insurance marker. Evan Rodrigues would add his second goal of the game, and his third point of the game. The assist on the play would come from Brian Boyle. The first period would end with the Penguins up 4-1.
Early in the second period, the Rangers would get on the board, and cut the Penguin lead in half. The goal would come from Frank Vatrano, his second goal of the playoffs. The assists would come from Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad.
A minute later, the Rangers would get another quick goal. The goal coming from Artemi Panarin, his second goal of the playoffs. The assists would come from Adam Fox and Ryan Strome. The goal would bring the Rangers back to within one.
Before the end of the period, the Rangers would tie up the game. The goal coming from trade deadline acquisition Andrew Copp. It would be Copp’s third goal of the playoffs, and would come via short handed. The assist on the play would come from Kevin Rooney. It is the third unanswered goal of the period for the Rangers and would make the game 4-4 heading into the third period.
In the third period, the Penguins would once again establish a lead. The goal would come from Danton Heinen. It would be Heinen’s first goal of the playoffs, with the play being unassisted.
The last two goals of the game would come from the Penguins. The sixth goal would come from Jake Guentzel, his fourth goal of the playoffs. The assists on the play would come from Sidney Crosby and Mike Matheson. The seventh goal of the game would come from Jeff Carter, his second goal of the game. The assists coming from Sidney Crosby and Brock McGinn. This would also be their third unanswered goal of the period, and secure the Penguins a 7-4 victory.
