In the first period, puck possession is battled for early. At 3:36, Pittsburgh heads to the power play when New York’s Patrik Nemeth is whistled for a Cross-checking penalty. With the Rangers successfully killing the penalty, they will take the 1-0 lead when Andrew Copp scores his second of the postseason at 6:50. Pittsburgh ties the contest at 8:52 when Jake Guentzel scores his third of the playoffs. Pittsburgh then gets their second power play of the night when Ryan Strome heads to the box for a Delay of Game via deflecting the puck over the glass at 16:35. At the end of the first, the Penguins and Rangers are tied 1-1.
In the second period, the Rangers get their first power play of the night when Pittsburgh’s John Marino heads off for a Cross-checking penalty at 1:05. The Rangers re-take the lead when Ryan Strome scores on the power play, his first of the postseason, with six seconds left of the power play. Then the Rangers take the 3-1 lead when Chris Kreider strikes for his second of the playoffs at 12:06. Then, New York heads to another power play when Pittsburgh’s Kasperi Kapanen heads off for a Holding penalty at 13:53. Sidney Crosby then strikes with his first goal of the playoffs to bring the Pens within a goal at 18:34.
In the third period, puck battles go back and forth across both ends, with plenty of shots getting off. New York takes the 4-2 lead when Artemi Panarin strikes with his first of the postseason at 8:02. Frank Vatrano then responds with a goal of his own to give the Blueshirts the three goal lead at 9:49. Matching minors are doled out at 12:25 when Pittsburgh’s Brock McGinn is sent off for Cross-checking and New York’s Filip Chytil is sent off for a Slashing penalty. The penalty comes to an end and with 5:15 left in the period, Pittsburgh netminder Louis Dominque is pulled to bring the extra attacker out for the Pens. At 17:56, Pittsburgh’s Jeff Carter is sent off for a goaltender interference call, as well as a roughing call with Drew O’Connor serving the Roughing penalty, and then New York’s Alexis Lafreniere is also shown the box for a Roughing penalty.
