PHF Weekend Recap – Getting in a Groove

Welcome to the TXHT PHF Weekend Recap for the Weekend of Saturday, January 22nd and Sunday, January 23rd, 2022, plus news coming out of the weekend.

Saturday, January 22nd, 2022

Game #1 – Toronto Six v. Connecticut Whale

  • Postponed due to COVID Travel Restrictions

Game #2 – Metropolitan Riveters v. Boston Pride

  • In Boston the Pride return to action for the first time since 2021 as they host the Metropolitan Riveters, and after a scoreless first period Jillian Dempsey would strike to give the the Pride the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Emily Janiga would score to tie the game for the Rivs, but Dempsey and Kaleigh Fratkin would score to give the Pride the 3-1 victory over the Riveters.

Game #3 – Minnesota Whitecaps v. Buffalo Beauts

  • In Buffalo the Beauts would host the Minnesota Whitecaps, and after a scoreless first period both teams would trade goals as Claudia Kepler would strike for the Beauts and Allie Thunstrom would score for the Whitecaps. Then in the third period Ashleigh Brykaliuk and Thunstrom would score to give the Whitecaps the 3-1 victory over the Beauts.

Game #1 – Toronto Six v. Connecticut Whale

Game #2 – Minnesota Whitecaps v. Buffalo Beauts

  • Back in Buffalo for the second game of their weekend series the Beauts would host the Minnesota Whitecaps, and in the first period Allie Thunstrom would strike to give the Whitecaps the 1-0 lead. In the second period Haley Mack, Jonna Curtis, Thunstrom, and Audra Morrison would score to give the Whitecaps the dominating 5-0 lead over the Beauts. Then in the third period Autumn MacDougall would score for the Beauts, but Curtis’ second of the game would give the Whitecaps the 6-1 victory over the Beauts.

Game #3 – Metropolitan Riveters v. Boston Pride

  • In Boston the Pride would host the Metropolitan Riveters, and in the first period Theresa Knutson, Emily Janiga, and Kendall Cornine would score to give the Rivs the 3-0 lead. In the second period Tori Sullivan would score to give the Pride on the board. Then in the third period Meghan Rickard and Taylor Wenczkowski would score for the Pride, but Cornine’s second of the game 27 seconds into the period would give the Riveters the 4-3 victory over the Pride.

Standings

3 Stars of the Week

First Star – Allie Thunstrom (MIN)

  • Thunstrom would have one impressive week as she would start off her week at the ECHL All-Star Classic as a representative for the PHF. At the ECHL All-Star Classic Thunstrom would score a goal for the ECHL All-Stars, and then she would clock in at 13.75 seconds at the events Fastest Skater competition. Then in PHF action she would score twice in a 3-1 victory over Buffalo on Saturday, and on Sunday Thunstrom would score two goals and an assist to give the Whitecaps the 6-1 victory over the Beauts.

Second Star – Brooke Wolejko (MET)

  • Wolejko would play her best hockey of the season as she would stop 32 out of 34 shots faced on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Boston. Then on Sunday Wolejko would record a season high 39 saves to guide the Riveters to a 4-3 victory over the Pride.

Third Star – Patti Marshall (MIN)

  • Marshall recorded four assist in two games played for the Whitecaps, and would lead all defenders in scoring for the weekend. Marshall would assist on all three goals scored in Minnesota’s 3-1 victory over the Beauts on Saturday, and then record an assist in Sunday’s 6-1 victory over the Beauts.
