Devils Lose Sixth in a Row

New Jersey Devils (10-15-5 25pts) vs

Pittsburgh Penguins (17-8-5 39pts)

Game Recap:

After suffering a loss last night in Detroit, the New Jersey Devils return home to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in their second game of back to backs. The Devils for the most part jumped on the Penguins with plenty of offensive chances, especially while on the power play. However, the Penguins on the second Devils power play opportunity got on the scoreboard first thanks to a short handed goal by Teddy Blueger. Blueger picked off a dangerous pass from Jack Hughes that was supposed to be for Dougie Hamilton and went in on a breakaway to beat goalie Jon Gilles for his seventh goal of the season to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. That would be the only goal of the period as the New Jersey Devils trail the Penguins heading into the intermission.

Danton Heinen extended Pittsburgh’s lead to 2-0 sixty-three seconds into period two as he received a pass at the right face off circle and picked the corner top shelf for the goal and his ninth goal of the season. The Devils responded quickly a minute later and got within one goal as Janne Kuokkanen tipped in a shot from the point by Ty Smith for his fourth of the year at the 2:20 mark. It was a close and penalty filled period the rest of the way with both teams getting power play opportunities but not converting on them. After two periods, the Penguins would lead the Devils 2-1.

In the third period at the 9:31 mark, Mike Matheson took a half slap shot that dinged off the post and in to extend the Penguins lead to 3-1. That was his third goal of the season. New Jersey a couple minutes later got the game within one as Nathan Bastian tipped in a shot from Dougie Hamilton on the power play to get the Devils back within one goal. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the tying goal and suffered their sixth straight loss as they lose to the Penguins by a final score of 3-2. New Jersey is back in action on Tuesday night as they square off again with the Penguins but this time in the Steel City.
