Devils Vanquish the Flyers 5-2

New Jersey Devils (9-6-4 22pts) vs

Philadelphia Flyers (8-8-4 20pts)

Game Recap:

After a poor outing the other night in Nashville, the New Jersey Devils return home to the Prudential Center with the hopes of rebounding against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers are also looking to rebound as they’ve been on a five game losing streak and are 0-3-2 in that time span. Dougie Hamilton would get the Devils on the board first at the 5:07 mark. Hamilton would hit the post on his first scoring chance before converting on the second as he would deflect in a pass from Andreas Johnsson and into the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Later on in the period with the Devils on the power play, Scott Laughton would get the puck chipped up to him from a board scrum, and sent on a breakaway where he would roof the puck over Devils goalie MacKenzie Blackwood for his fourth of season and a short handed goal. After the first period, the score would be tied 1-1.

Andreas Johnsson would give the Devils their lead back early on in the second period by scoring his eight goal of the season. Johnsson had two cracks at scoring as he at first attempted to roof it upstairs and missed before Jesper Bratt gave a pass back to him where he wouldn’t miss a second time to make the score 2-1. New Jersey did a great job on the penalty kill keeping the Flyers at bay and when things returned to even strength. The Devils would take a 2-1 lead and begin the third period on the power play.

New Jersey would be unsuccessful on the early power play and failed to expand their lead. Not to long after that, Joel Farabee would tie the game at the 3:04 mark for the Flyers as he would get a pass in front of the from Scott Laughton and bury the shot for his seventh goal of the year. The Devils eventually got their lead back and then expanded on it. Jesper Bratt scored his fifth of the season at the 11:57 mark as Andreas Johnsson passed it to him towards the front of the net and slid the puck in on his backhand and into the back of the net to make it 3-2. A few minutes later, recently reacquired from Seattle, Nathan Bastian scored his second goal of the season to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Devils. While Michael McLeod was attempting a pass skating around the Flyers goal, the puck bounced off a Flyers defender and right to Dougie Hamilton who passed it to Bastian and then buried the puck into the back of the net for his second of the season. Moments later, Andreas Johnsson would score an empty net goal to make it a four point night as he would have two goals and two assists in the night. Johnsson’s goal would secure the victory for the Devils as they would win by a final score of 5-2. MacKenzie Blackwood played very well in net making 25 saves in the winning effort. New Jersey is back in action on Tuesday night as they welcome the San Jose Sharks into town.
