New Jersey Devils (4-2-1 9pts) vs Columbus Blue Jackets (5-3-0 10pts)
Game Recap:
Happy Hockey Halloween! Tonight, the New Jersey Devils return home after playing the night before on the road to host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Andreas Johnsson continues his nice start as he opened up the scoring tonight for the Devils by scoring his fourth goal of the season sixty-seven seconds into the game. Johnsson received a backhand pass from Jesper Bratt to the left face-off circle and then buried the shot to beat goalie Joonas Korpisalo for the 1-0 lead. At the 11:55 mark, Oliver Bjorkstrand would tie the game up on the power play to even the score 1-1. Bjorgstrand would sneak into a coverage gap in the high slot and fire a one-timer for his fourth goal on the young season. Columbus wouldn’t be done scoring as Patrik Laine would give the Blue Jackets the lead. Blue Jackets winger Jakub Voracek would set up Laine for a one-timer that would beat Devils goalie Scott Wedgewood for the goal. After the first period, the Blue Jackets would lead the Devils 2-1.
Rookie Dawson Mercer is showing he belongs in the National Hockey League for the New Jersey Devils as he tied the score up at the 8:37 mark for his third goal of the season. Mercer picked up a loose puck from behind the net, span around to the front of the net and shot the puck that would go off the goalie’s pad and in. Dougie Hamilton joined the scoring party a little over a minute later by scoring his second goal of the season. Hamilton benefited from great board work by Pavel Zacha and Nico Hischier who helped set up his goal as he fired the puck from the right face-off circle to give the Devils a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
New Jersey for the most part did a pretty good job defensively trying to hold onto the lead they head and tried to add to it. Unfortunately, they couldn’t add to it and eventually the Blue Jackets tied the game on a great individual effort by their captain Boone Jenner. Jenner got the puck off of a Devils turnover and skated it to the left face-off circle and then fired it behind the goalie to tie the game at 3-3. The Devils had a chance late in the game with a 5 on 3 power play on consecutive Blue Jackets penalties but were unable to capitalize on the chances they had.
This game would require overtime. Overtime was very exciting as both teams traded chances and hit goal posts. Each team almost won the game at different times in the extra period but were unable to score. Next we would settle the game in the shootout. It would come down to Blue Jackets winger Jakub Voracek who would score the game winner in the shootout as he put the puck on his backhand and roofed it upstairs to beat Devils goalie Scott Wedgewood for the win. New Jersey is back in action on Tuesday night as they head out west to take on the Anaheim Ducks to start their three game California road trip.
