Calgary Flames (1-1-1 3pts) v. Washington Capitals (3-0-1 7pts)
Game Recap:
It’s the first early afternoon matinee of the season as the Washington Capitals host the Calgary Flames. the Caps would get some good chances early on in the game, but then this game became a game of special teams and that’s where the Flames torched the Caps. After killing the first penalty of the game, the Flames would draw a poweprlay for themselves and that is when Andrew Mangiapane would strike for his third of the season to give the Flames the 1-0 lead. Then about 90 seconds later Elias Lindholm would unleash an absolute snipe to grow the Flames lead to two, but Lindholm would not be done there as he would take advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Caps while they were on their second powerplay to give score a beautiful shorty for his second of the game to give the Flames the 3-0 lead over the flat Caps.
In the second period it would be the Capitals flying high above the Flames, and it would be Evgeny Kuznetsov leading the way with a shorthanded goal that just squeaked past Dan Vladar to give the Caps their first goal of the game. Then later in the period it would be a beautiful drop pass from Tom Wilson to Martin Fehervary would rip a blast past Vladar for his first career NHL goal to cut the Flames lead to one. Then in the final minutes of the period Alex Ovechkin would snipe his fifth of the season to tie the game at three and get Vitek Vanecek, who was replaced at the start of the period by Ilya Samsonov, off of the hook for the game.
Going into the third period it would be a rather quiet period between the two teams, and as a result this game would require extra time. In the extra frame it would be Elias Lindholm completing the hat trick as he would get the puck through Ilya Samsonov to give the Flames the 4-3 overtime victory.
