New Jersey Devils (2-0-0 4pts) vs Seattle Kraken (1-3-1 3pts)
Tonight featured the first matchup ever between the New Jersey Devils and the expansion Seattle Kraken as the Devils welcome the Kraken to the Garden State. Rookie Dawson Mercer opened up the scoring for New Jersey with his first National Hockey League goal as Tomas Tatar fed him a one timer on a 2 on 1 to give their the Devils a 1-0 lead. About a minute later, Damon Severson picked up the rebound shot from Jack Hughes and put the puck into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. The Devils did a really good job in the first period limiting Seattle’s chances and kept their 2-0 lead going into the second period.
About midway through the second period, Riley Sheahan scored his first goal of the season as he wristed a shot that would beat goalie Jonathan Bernier. A perfect rebound shot went right towards Sheahan’s stick and roofed the puck under the bar to get the Kraken within one goal. Jimmy Vesey had other plans moments later as he scored his first goal as a New Jersey Devil to give his new team a 3-1 lead. Vesey redirected the puck right through Kraken goalie Joey Daccord’s five-hole. After two periods, the New Jersey Devils had a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
Jared McCann at the 14:31 mark of the third period got the Kraken within one as he scored his third goal of the season on the power play. McCann circled around the ice before before firing the puck into the back of the net making it 3-2 game. Unfortunately for the Kraken, the Devils would hold on and score an empty net goal as Pavel Zacha scored his first goal of the season as the rookie Dawson Mercer turned this into a multi-point game for himself. Unfortunately for the New Jersey Devils, star center Jack Hughes went out of the game due to an upper body injury in the first period and never returned. The Devils are back in action on Thursday night at home against the Washington Capitals.
