FOURTH-ROUND DRAFT PICK HANNAH BATES SIGNS WITH CONNECTICUT
Danbury, CT- The Connecticut Whale have signed defender Hannah Bates to a contract for the 2021-22 season after selecting her in the fourth round of the 2021 NWHL Draft.
Bates is the third member of the Whale’s 2021 NWHL Draft class to officially join the Pod following the signings of first overall pick Taylor Girard and second round selection Emma Polaski.
“I’m grateful to be able to continue playing hockey at the next level with the Whale,” said Bates on her signing. “It’s an exciting time for the team and I can’t wait to see what we’re able to accomplish this year.”
Bates is coming off of a four-year career at St. Cloud State University and on June 29 became the first player from the collegiate program ever chosen in the NWHL Draft. During her time with the Huskies, the Trenton, MI native tallied 15 points (2G, 13A) in 120 career games and blocked a cumulative 75 shots. She also served as an assistant captain during her senior year.
“We are happy to sign another draft pick from this year’s draft, Hannah Bates. Hannah is a strong skater and smart defender, using her skating abilities to make it hard for other teams to enter our zone,” said Connecticut head coach Colton Orr. “We look for her to continue to grow as a player and add depth to our defense group.
The 22-year-old is the team’s 16th signing this off-season and the fifth defender that the team has inked. She joins free agent acquisition Rebecca Morse, returnees Tori Howran and Hanna Beattie, plus newcomer Allie Munroe on the blue line this season.
