The series has shifted back to Long Island in an all important Game 6. The Lightning are looking to close out the series, while the Islanders are looking to extend it to a Game 7 in Tampa. Here is how the two teams would line up:
It would take nearly the whole period before we would get the first breakthrough of the game. The visiting Lightning getting on the board first to silence the home crowd. The goal coming from Brayden Point, his fourteenth goal of the playoffs, and he extends his goal streak to an incredible nine games. A net mouth scramble saw the puck go to Point’s back hand and he shoveled it home past Varlamov. The lone assist on the play was credited to Anthony Cirelli. The Lightning would take a 1-0 lead heading into the second.
It would take a little more than half of the second period, the Lightning would find themselves another breakthrough and double their lead. Ondrej Palat made a great breakout pass that found Anthony Cirelli behind the defense. Cirelli shot the puck past the legs of Varlamov, scoring his fourth goal of the playoffs.
The two goal lead wouldn’t last long, as the Islanders 2 minutes later would find the back of the net to cut the Lightning lead in half. The goal coming from Jordan Eberle, his fourth goal of the playoffs. A move to the slot by Eberle, saw him take a backhand shot that got through under Vasilevskiy’s blocker. The assists on the play came from Matt Barzal and Andy Greene. The Lightning would take a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
It would take some time, but the Islanders would build on their goal and establish momentum with the crowd getting back engaged in the game. Matt Barzal would skate hard around the offensive zone and find a streaking Scott Mayfield on the right side. Mayfield would roof the puck over Vasilevskiy’s glove and in the top of the net, where there was not a lot of room. It is Mayfield’s second goal of the playoffs, with the assists on the play coming from Matt Barzal and Adam Pelech. The score would remained tied at 2, and the game would head to overtime.
It wouldn’t take long in the extra frame to find a game winner. The Islanders would get the goal, an awful turnover in the defensive zone by Lightning forward Blake Coleman found the stick of Anthony Beauvillier, who rifled the shot by Vasilevskiy short side over the glove. The goal was unassisted, and it is Beauvillier’s fifth goal of the playoffs. We will have a Game 7 between these two teams.
