Game Recap:
In the first period, much like in Game 1, this would be a feel out process. An ugly looking shot from Vegas would go off the blocker of Montreal’s Carey Price two minutes into the game. Close to four minutes in, Montreal would get a couple of great chances in front of the Vegas net but Marc-Andre Fleury would block those shots. At 6:12, Joel Armia scores to give the Montreal Canadiens the 1-0 lead. Midway through the period, the Canadiens go on the penalty kill when Jeff Petry is called for tripping at 9:51. Tyler Toffoli scores his fifth goal of the postseason to give the Canadiens the 2-0 lead late into the period. At the end of the first period, Montreal has the 2-0 lead.
In the second, it looks like Alec Martinez would get Vegas on the board but the puck misses the upper portion of the crossbar by a foot. At 5:55 Joel Armia is off to the penalty box for a holding call for Montreal. A fast paced period takes place with several shots attempts made on both sides of the ice and leads for a very competitive second period. Paul Byron, off of a sloppy pass in between the legs of Vegas skaters, scores a top shelf goal to give Montreal the 3-0 lead late into the contest. Vegas gets on the board at 18:46 when Alex Pietrangelo nets his second goal of the postseason but the Canadiens still lead by two. A scrum ensues William Carrier is battling Corey Perry for puck possession and Eric Staal is hitting Carrier from behind. No penalties are doled out on the scrum. Going into the third period, Montreal is holding of the Golden Knights with the 3-1 lead.
In the third period, with 5:14 left, Pietrangelo scores his second goal of the contest to bring Vegas within a goal. Montreal escapes despite a furious attempt in the last four minutes of the contest by Vegas with the 3-2 win to tie the series at a piece.
