In Pivotal Game 3, Penguins Score Late Winner

With the series heading to New York for Game 3, the Penguins and Islanders found themselves in a close, one goal game. In the previous two games, the teams traded wins in Pittsburgh. Here’s how the two teams would line up:

The Penguins got off to a quick start on the road, nabbing the first goal of the game and silencing the crowd. A shot from the point, off a turnover, that beat Varlamov scored by Kris Letang, unassisted. The period would end with the Penguins leading 1-0.

Though not changed on the NHL Box Score, the goal is credited to Zach Aston-Reese, with the assist to Letang.

Halfway through the second period, the Islanders would get one back and tie the game up. A beautiful curl and drag by Scott Mayfield that beat Jarry high over the glove. Assists on the play came from Matt Barzal and Jordan Eberle.

Many of the Islanders goals in the series have been high over Jarry’s glove.

The tie wouldn’t last long, as the Penguins would re-establish their lead, the goal coming from Jeff Carter, the assists on the play came from Frederick Gaudreau and Marcus Pettersson. Five minutes later, before the end of the period, the Penguins would double their lead. Jason Zucker would snap a shot over Varlamov’s glove, the assists on the play came from Evgeni Malkin, his first point of the series, in his first game, and Kris Letang. The Penguins would take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Islanders would cut into the lead early in the third period, the goal coming from Cal Clutterbuck, the assists on the play came from Casey Cizikas and Scott Mayfield. Two minutes later, the Islanders would tie the game up via the powerplay. The goal would be provided by Anthony Beauvillier, who stuffed the puck through Jarry’s legs. Assists on the play would come from Matt Barzal and Noah Dobson.

Tie game early in the third!

A little over a minute later, the Penguins would re-gain their lead, also via the powerplay. The goal would come from Jeff Carter, it would be his second of the game. The shot beat Varlamov on the short side, over his shoulder. The assist on the play came from Evgeni Malkin.

Seven minutes later, the Islanders fourth line would find another breakthrough. A shot from the point took a double deflection in front of Jarry’s net. Ultimately the goal would be credited to Cal Clutterbuck, it would be his second of the game. Assist on the play came from Scott Mayfield.

However, the tied affair would only last two minutes, as Zach Aston-Reese would put on a heavy forecheck, get the turnover, kick the puck to the point. Kris Letang would send the puck to the net, the puck took a deflection in the air; and Brandon Tanev would knock the puck out of the air, below the crossbar to beat Varlamov and give the Penguins the lead again, for the fourth time in the game.

Game winner!

The Penguins defense would stifle any chance of the Islanders trying to tie the game, as Pittsburgh would hang on to win the thrilling goal fest of a Game 3.
