Capitals v. Flyers: Dowd’s Pair Edge Flyers

Washington Capitals (15-6-4 34pts) v. Philadelphia Flyers (13-7-3 29pts)

Game Recap:

In Philadelphia for their third meeting of the season the Flyers would play host to the Washington Capitals. In the first period the Capitals would get the first powerplay of the game, and despite some good scoring opportunities, the Caps would not strike, but they would respond after the powerplay as Brian Elliott would make an unwise play and result in the puck getting coughed up to Alex Ovechkin who would rip it past Elliott for the 1-0 lead. However, the Flyers would respond as Travis Konecny would score on the Flyers lone powerplay of the period to tie the game at one, but Conor Sheary would get a leaky one through Elliott to regain the one goal lead heading into the first intermission for the Caps.

Come the second period the Caps would get another powerplay opportunity, but it would not be substantial for them. The Capitals would strike though after the powerplay had expired as John Carlson would bomb the puck past Elliott to notch his 500th career point, and grow the Caps lead to two. Then near the end of the period Nic Dowd would drive down the wing and while losing the puck, it would hit off of Shayne Gostisbehere and go in the net to give the Caps the 4-1 lead.

In the third period we’d have a very weird start as the final 90 seconds of the second period would be played due to a delay caused by a broken pane of glass, and after that time was played and the goalies switched to the appropriate third period ends of the ice, Ivan Provorov would strike early to cut the Caps lead to two. Later in the period Scott Laughton would rip one past Ilya Samsonov’s glove to bring the Flyers back within one, but Dowd’s second of the game courtesy of the empty net would secure the 5-3 victory for the Capitals.
